"about 100% of people who watch redriven only 20% are subscribed" you said that in a video one time. I used to be that 80% but now I'm part of that 20%. You doing a good job mate. Thank you I mean it. I have a 1996 Toyota conquest with 687000km on the clock and it's my only car. I've had it for 12 years now. It's my daily driver and only car. Car reviewers such of your nature are a rear breed. You give me hope and remind me every time I watch your videos why I have such a good car... Thank you.. You a life line when I'm drowning. I have to agree with all of your points. The demise of the station wagon is something that I don't understand. Holden developed the sportswagon which not only looked good but had more space than a similar sized SUV. On top of that it handled and rides better than any SUV as well. If only the public could see it that way and every SUV owner bought one instead of an SUV then perhaps we may still make cars here.
It's actually the other way around. Relentless marketing of SUVs has induced demand. The public didn't wake up one day and want SUVs - it's the car industry that pumped endless marketing dollars in hyping up the SUV & truck, which they can sell for drastically higher margins. As usual with such campaigns most people eventually fall for them hook, line and sinker. The induced SUV demand inevitably pushed down demand for "uncool" wagons that received almost no hype marketing; and now the same has happened to small cars altogether. It's ridiculous because the same public is concerned for the environment....and the same manufacturers are pushing electric zero emission plans at a ridiculous pace that won't work for a huge segment of commuters. Yet all along the marketing and consumer behaviour pushes out smaller, lighter cars that have always been dramatically more efficient. People are talking more than ever about their fossil fuel & carbon footprint while driving cars that are much worse for the same than the cars they drove two decades ago...somebody make it all make sense 🙈
I didn't get it until I drove one and a large ute pulled up to my right (trying to turn right) while I tried to turn left. In an SUV, you can see over the bonnet of the ute/SUV/Truck while previously it would block my line of sight and I had to edge dangerously close to the travelling lane to get a view of oncoming traffic. In an SUV you're on more equal terms and can see over their bonnet.
@@VarlsSki Yeah, tragedy of the commons. It solved my problem but made the problem worse overall. I liked my old honda civic, but at the end of the day, I can't stop tradies from driving lifted utes, only change my own purchases to stay safe in response.

Absolutely. Being a grumpy old(ish) man, I refuse to buy a car that does not have a full size spare. And services should have 5 wheel rotations not four. A set of new tyres is 5 not 4. Then you don't need to scrap a tyre with 99+% tread remaining.

Those thin tyres are absolutely vulnerable in the country towns in Australia , I had them and burned through three tyres QuickStart on rough roads and dirt roads, they can’t take the bumps there’s just not enough give in them .
Totally agree on the smaller wheels, station wagons, buttons (touch screens are just cheaper to make and not intuitive to use while driving). Pop-up headlights are always cool! Two tone and decals depend on how tasteful it is. The handbrake stalk/stick should stay, torque converters, and the ability to switch off all the beeps and alarms of safety tech e.g. lane keep assist, auto braking.
You missed one thing when talking about dopey 18, 19 and 20" wheels, they are back and Sacroiliac Joint destroyers. They turn what could be a comfortable place to be to junk heap on square wheels.
The small side window used to be great when everybody smoked like there was tomorrow. Nowadays, I toss everyone out of my car for even holding a cigarette.
Wagons-Yes. My 330i Ci had electric opening pop out rear windows which was very cool. Decals - no, often daggy. Also, let’s get rid of aftermarket window tint. After a couple of years it looks horrible, also often illegal. Two tone paint- only on a Rolls.
You nailed it!. I'll add: Homologation specials. In fact there's a serious lack of competitors in the T2 Dakar class for example the only entry this year was a 300 series Landcruiser. Where are the competitors that I can purchase like the good old days?!
Thanks for the rare shoutout regarding SUVs. I'm just shy of 7 feet tall and have major back problems, and I'm genuinely getting sick of people telling me I'm wrong for wanting an SUV instead of a station wagon.
Would love to see some heritage model Japanese cars with the beautiful 80s/90s neon digital dash, something like the 89 soarer revamped while still retaining that dash, idealy doing it authenticly as done in the past, but even if modern display dashes had multiple themed options from the factory including styles from every era. I feel this would add a lot of customisation and a personal touch to your car and certainly be a selling point worth presenting. But Imma do it anyway with aftermarket parts cause I ain't waiting around for manufacturers to get it done .
"tune your radio onto allied air command" had me laughing out loud. Great video. Agree - bring back lossless surround DVD audio drives and popup headlights! I don't see the point of high end audio when you're streaming lossy audio through a lossy BT connection! I've had to give up wagons as the Japanese really don't do them anymore and I don't have the balls to go euro!
Why can't anyone make a little cradle for phones it pops in and everything connects, if all phone manufactures just agreed on having a similar output jack.. every thing would be OK
My first car was a VW Type 3 Squareback 2 door wagon. Engine was in the rear squashed flat so you plenty of storage space with its two boots. Quarter glass on both doors provided excellent ventilation.
Yes to all Also Soft velour seats Four way adjustable headrests on lower model cars Carpet on door panels Non-linear power delivery on turbo engines Rub strips on bumpers T-tops and targa roof (eg Mitsubishi Rvr 90s) Skylite and Crystalite roofs instead of pano roof The one large rear mud flap on vans with weird slogans (Enjoy your outdoor life etc) Weird story slogans in graphics on 90s vehicles.
I really loved those Triangle windows and how you could really get some serious air blowing in! I hate touch screens instead of real buttons. Great video!
Yes for all especially station wagons, buttons, and decals. Everyone loved my dad's old Toyota Hiace, it had decals, the corner vent window, and 5 on-the-tree manual pushed by a tired old 1.8 naturally aspirated diesel! Couldn't even reach 90kms/hr, but Still the most fun and engaging car I have ever driven. Things that need to go - .... Stop-start feature, space saver spares, electric park brake, keyless everything, start button, CVT's, paddle shifters on non-track oriented cars. Basically things that detract from the experience or versatility of the car, or add complexity for the sake of making something a tiny bit 'easier'.
Landrover Series/ Defender had the best idea for direct ventilation - with vent flaps below the windscreen, and Toyota BJ 45 with the vent flaps in the footwells - bring back good old fashioned simplicity !!
Love my wagons, my current Liberty wagon, my previous Stagea, and my Corolla 4WD wagon as my weekend classic. Aiming for a Levorg next. Wagons will always be cool.
some things should remain buttons/dials rather than a touch screen. I was born in 02, so I've gotten used to touch screens, obviously. but having a touch screen that controls everything from volume, fans, etc is dangerous. because you have to take your eyes off the road to fiddle with a screen, rather than reaching over, being able to physically feel a dial (and maybe a quick glance to confirm it is the right one) and adjusting that way.
My first car was an 84 Hilux SR5 xtracab, dark blue with the white style side stripe down the side and three quarter windows. And I’ve just got into a VF series 2 SV6 Sportswagon. You’ve got good taste my guy
Great ideas Adam. Would like to see more cockpit style dials on dash boards like the ones you would have found in a Toyota 2000GT, 240z -280zx and Mitsubishi 3000GT.
VL Calais Turbo…2 tone: check. Pop up headlights: check. And as for decals, first thing I thought of was the good ol’ Commodore Vacationer with the subtle pinstriping and logo on the rear quarter panel.
Best car improvement video ever! Brilliant! you are spot on! Especially with regard to beautiful engines! And quality switches and controls. And gee, I sooooo want quarter lights to come back. Pop-up headlights, not so much.
Please do a part 2 of this guys as there are so many other old car trends that need to come back such as; chrome bumpers and trims, full size spare tyres, hood/bonnet ornaments/emblems, built in step sides for forbies and running boards for cars etc, proper gauges(temp, fuel, speedometer etc), proper quartz halogen lights, proper metal hub caps, column shift transmissions (both auto and manual)etc... For next week's list the ones that myself and others I have spoken too agree should go from new cars are; Touch screen infotainment systems/infotainment systems with no CD player. Lane keep assist (all the people i know that have it hate it for different reasons) Common rail diesels (multiple horror stories regarding them) Flappy paddle gear boxes Push button starts etc... Also there were 5 and 2 bonus items on todays list lol😂 Great work as always guys and look forward to Friday's video as always 👍.
Good idea for a vid... I'll add plush velour seats, which I recall as a kid from the 90s. Most 'leather' these days is fake anyway, those older velour trims were great, so comfy.
Once again, very well said. I have the old style 60 series Landcruiser station wagon complete with (and use) quarter windows. I have a small modern car as well but I love to drive the old Cruiser.
WOW Matey talk about on the money totally agree with you all round especially on wheel rims, vent windows and station wagons. Also agree with you on getting rid of those stupid touch screens and one you left out we definitely need to go back to the good old days where manual transmissions ruled supreme. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
yes to wagons, I have one and prior to that a Saab sort a wagon. Love the ignition key between the seat. Great anti theft item as you had to turn the car on its side to get at the wires. I miss the dip switch on the floor. And the quarter vets. Great video.
I had completely forgotten about the three-quarter pop out windows on three door cars, then I remember how much I loved them on my old 306. Goddamn that was a pretty car. Low kerb weights are a feature I would like to see return to modern cars. I miss when a huge family car would weigh under 1.5 tonnes. Now a Porsche 911 is 1600kg...
I really hate all the chimes and bells. I think a dash light is enough to tell us about a seatbelt or door state. Is very hard to run your stereo with the doors open and ign off... Stupid door chime wont shut up
On the Aircon vs quarter window thing. Having the airconditioning on, is actually more fuel efficient than opening the window. Those quarter windows are even worse... Sadly.. I did love those on my old van and my older Jackaroo.
CONSTANT 4WD QUAD CAM 16 VALVE FUEL INJECTED INTERCOOLED TURBO is what my old RS Turbo Liberty had on the side in discreet grey lettering on the white paint. Loved that car 👍🇦🇺
2:32 The first thing I do when I get a new car is remove the stupid plastic covers. All it does is trap heat so all your wiring connectors and hoses go brittle sooner. I’d also like to see if anything looks out of place or is leaking before it becomes a major problem.
Wonderful observations Adam about dual cab owners because it amuses me what naive lengths people go to impress themselves or others - I’m senior enough to remember that awful hole in the muffler sound permeating the neighbourhoods because people in particular socio-economic spaces couldn’t afford or care about this repair hence the noise - come forward fifty years now dual cab ute owners automatically fit 3” exhausts to impress themselves or others producing the exact same noise generated by the same boguns years ago - oh dear nothing changes as we have to endure this and those who have to fit a 3” exhaust to their new ‘bank loan’ v8 landcrusier utes as a pissing contest with their ‘drinking mates’ - it’s got nothing to do with engine performance - oh this is one of those human behaviour traits I focussed on during my doctorates in sociology and psychology - bring back the conventional handbrake and knobs for aircon and infotainment systems.
Love your videos, Redriven. Love from Newcastle. Two-tone paint would be great! I've seen it on new Bugatti's... looks amazing. Pop-up headlights are just another mechanical issue to go wrong. Though they do look cool on the right car. Don't agree with the smaller rims. When your ride is big... tiny rims look horrible. I don't mind low-profile run flat tyres.
So, a modern day 82-83 VH SL/E Commodore wagon, with two tone burgundy/silver paint, and a period correct 5 litre HDT style engine with chrome, and 16" HDT Centra alloy wheels... got it 😊 Oh and if you like pop up headlights, check out the C4 Corvette, turning on the lights is like art in motion 💡
@@blacktoothstavros2606 ah well good! More station wagons for all, They may just make a few spares for everyone As for shooting brakes they need to put a stop.. brakes arnt cheap and deserve a second chance not be put on the firing line.. what ever did they do? Organise a neo nazi march at the Mercedes plant?
Manual transmission sedans and suvs. I think the Subaru WRX and Cadillac Blackwing are the only sedans sold in the US and the Ford Bronco and Subaru Crosstreck are the only SUVs. And Jeeps but those kinda don’t count lol
+1 for wagons… and ventilation from outside fresh air, and why do people not understand that you can have the fan/blower on WITHOUT having to switch on the AC.. jeees !.. also two tone paint jobs, a classic.. cheers oh and manual transmission too
I would agree with your list except for the pop up head lights. Who needs them? Instead I would like to see real glass covering the lights instead of plastic.
Manual gearbox. I'm still running my 01 camry wagon 5 spd 4 cylinder tape player manual crank rear windows with key only... So simple I just fixed head gasket, timing belt, radiator and a lot other related myself, at 435k kms. Rides like brand new now
Rear wheel drive and non sanitised steering. I have a long list of things for your next video - top of the list is getting rid of auto imposed nanny tech and associated beeping.
bring back: actual lever pull up from centre console hand brake. floor mounted hi beam switch. wooden rim small dish steering wheels rear wheel drive. limited slip diffs. agree, double cabs utes are not racing cars.
I agree with a lot of those trends another I would like to see is the return of velour seats with real leather faced seats as an option as opposed to those vegan vinyl seats featured in lots of vehicles these days passing off as something premium when only the base models had vinyl seats
Not the pop-up lights, NO. mechanism can/will fail then will cost a lot to fix and I don't think they are arrow dynamic as well...they just look cool, thats all.
Yes. My 1998 vw passag break with not touch blabla all knobs on the dash and 195/65/15 sized tires will be missed forever. Thank god i still have a NA miata. That drives best with 14 inch 185/60/14. Go fast on bad roads. Lots of warning when you go to it s limits on grip. Cheap. Never had a flat tire. It was too good, now all modern cars are stupid.

Also agree with you on getting rid of those stupid touch screens and one you left out we definitely need to go back to the good old days where manual transmissions ruled supreme. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Can we also bring back curb finders...instead of these beeping proximity sensors
YES! Graphics and stripes. As well as good ol' colours. People need to get over "Safe for resale" grey/white/black
That mock up with the RAV4: *chefs kiss*
yes to wagons, I have one and prior to that a Saab sort a wagon. Love the ignition key between the seat. Great anti theft item as you had to turn the car on its side to get at the wires. I miss the dip switch on the floor. And the quarter vets. Great video.
Pop up head lights would be so dope
I had completely forgotten about the three-quarter pop out windows on three door cars, then I remember how much I loved them on my old 306. Goddamn that was a pretty car.
Low kerb weights are a feature I would like to see return to modern cars. I miss when a huge family car would weigh under 1.5 tonnes. Now a Porsche 911 is 1600kg...
I really hate all the chimes and bells. I think a dash light is enough to tell us about a seatbelt or door state. Is very hard to run your stereo with the doors open and ign off... Stupid door chime wont shut up
I was with you almost all the way, and then you mentioned "pop-up headlights".
On the Aircon vs quarter window thing.
Having the airconditioning on, is actually more fuel efficient than opening the window. Those quarter windows are even worse... Sadly.. I did love those on my old van and my older Jackaroo.
It's a mixed bag, sure its more efficient but you don't get to experience sight smell and actual air
Yes please! Station wagons and buttons!
Rear drive, inline 6 and manual transmission (looking squarely at you VW Australia for not giving us a manual gti despite offering one in the UK)
CONSTANT 4WD QUAD CAM 16 VALVE FUEL INJECTED INTERCOOLED TURBO is what my old RS Turbo Liberty had on the side in discreet grey lettering on the white paint. Loved that car 👍🇦🇺
Rocker switches that actually "switch". What is the POINT of a rocker switch that returns to the middle and needs a little light to say "on"?
2:32 The first thing I do when I get a new car is remove the stupid plastic covers. All it does is trap heat so all your wiring connectors and hoses go brittle sooner. I’d also like to see if anything looks out of place or is leaking before it becomes a major problem.
Mate I agree with everything you said! One thing I would add panel vans!
Love this, great work. I’d love to have the floor button for your high beams come back.
6:47 that "RAV4" decal is taken straight from the 4runner 40th anniversary edition...and yes, it's a brand new car still being produced today.
Thanks mate, I agree.
I'm with you on "estate cars" station wagons with buttons not screens, on 17 inch wheels. With Quarterlights.
A full sized station wagon is a must to come back.
Bring back station wagons, SUVs farewell unless genuinely needed, the buttons should never be replaced by screens. I love your list 😍😍
So, a modern day 82-83 VH SL/E Commodore wagon, with two tone burgundy/silver paint, and a period correct 5 litre HDT style engine with chrome, and 16" HDT Centra alloy wheels... got it 😊
Oh and if you like pop up headlights, check out the C4 Corvette, turning on the lights is like art in motion 💡
Pedestrians torn to shreds - FAF AK. Sounds like this was filmed next to carro roundabout ;D
Oh, Adam.ive been saying this exact thing for years. We followed the Americans into suv hell instead of sticking with Europe.
What did Europe do?
WHAT DID YOU DO
🤣👌
@@nolesy34 Europe continued to make station wagons and shooting brakes.
@@blacktoothstavros2606 ah well good! More station wagons for all,
They may just make a few spares for everyone
As for shooting brakes they need to put a stop.. brakes arnt cheap and deserve a second chance not be put on the firing line.. what ever did they do?
Organise a neo nazi march at the Mercedes plant?
For safety...just have the pop up light hinge the other way.
orange indicator lenses.
Would love these to make a comeback!
Those knobs on the XY Falcon dash look cool but they always came off every time you touched them.
Manual transmission sedans and suvs. I think the Subaru WRX and Cadillac Blackwing are the only sedans sold in the US and the Ford Bronco and Subaru Crosstreck are the only SUVs. And Jeeps but those kinda don’t count lol
Air vents under the steering column directed at gentlemans meat and two veg for the heat of summer
"Flocked" material i think its suede.. is awesome
I own two cars with quarter windows and the fj73.cruiser has mad retro decals lol
bring back MANUAL window winders .a REAL spare wheel, small cheap 2 door coupe,
All of the above mentioned and chrome bumpers
Oh yes ! Chrome. Yum
I agree to all these & want to add white wall tyres.
Not the pop-up lights, NO. mechanism can/will fail then will cost a lot to fix and I don't think they are arrow dynamic as well...they just look cool, thats all.
What if pop up lights but they came with a spare you could just slot in
Manual locking Hubs on 4wd's. Handbrake lever. Spare tyre. external sun visor. ashtray for coins.
Ashtrays - ergonomic shagging seats - no seatbeltless ding ding ding - bloody manual transmissions.
Yes to the two tone paint and decals! My first car was a SWB 4x4 that had a lightning decal on the doors. Oh the Nostalgia 😂
