This is pretty sweet, but I feel like to actually be a good member of a party, you might need 2 levels in Evocation Wizard so you aren't cowbelling your friends to death. It's way better than spending sorcery points on Careful Spell and they take no damage instead of just succeeding on the save.

As a sorcerer, you also have access to empower spell, which allows you to reroll your Cha mod # of dice for added stickiness. Yes, it eats into your sorcery points, but if you're constantly rolling 2s or 3s, you might want to spend the 1 sorcery point to do more damage. This works especially well for those levels when you have a couple extra sorcery points because you don't have enough to convert to another 3rd level spell slot. The way I'd do this is cast the fireball, use the tiefling feat to reroll the ones, if you roll another 1, convert that to a 2, then look at the other rolls and take the 2s (maybe 3s) you rolled and use empowered to reroll those to hopefully get 5s and 6s. I believe the feat follows the same convention as other rerolling abilities, that is you have to take the new value, period. So the 1s you rerolled with the tiefling feat can't be also rerolled with the metamagic. But if you get any 1s with the rerolls, your elemental adept feat kicks in to boost it to 2. It's a bit complicated but so is sorcery point maintenance. Since you're getting fire resistance from your species (man, that sounds dumb every time I say it- "species"), maybe you could go for a wild magic sorcerer instead? I don't like the redundancy, but 4 to 5 extra damage per casting is probably too good to pass up. So if the damage dice consistently go south on you, consider empower spell metamagic. You can swap it out whenever you get an ASI, so if you went with something else for metamagic, you can get it later if you change your mind.

While I suppose it might give you a few less fireballs to cast each day, I'm thinking it would be worth to take a 2 level dip into evocation Wizard. The biggest problems with things like fireball is not wanting to hit your allies, but with that dip you can just ignore that matter, because your allies aren't affected by your own AoE evocation spells. And since you don't lose your total amount of spellslots by multiclassing into another full-caster, you don't really lose out on many extra casts anyways

If you just want fireballs and don’t care about the boosts a 20th level wizard can get infinite fireballs and cast them twice a round. Wish for a simulacrum, long rest, true polymorph simulacrum to pit fiend, long rest, true polymorph yourself into a pit fiend. Now both of you can cast fire ball at will every round.

    Sup.
In case you were wondering about the specific numbers, re-rolling 1's with Flames of Phlegethos adds another 0,4167 (5/12) average damage to each d6.
For a standard fireball, that is an average increase of 3,3333 damage (+11,9%).
    Peace.
Formula for extra damage when re-rolling dice:
    ((n-r)/(2*n/r))
    n is the die rolled (n=6 for a d6)
r is the number you can re-roll (r=1 for Flames of Phlegethos, and r=2 for Great Weapon fighting style)
    ((6-1)/(2*6/1)) = 5/12 = 0,4167

    IT'S TIME FOR MATH!!!!
So if we are talking level 20, then any class that can cast true polymorph (Bards, Warlocks, and Wizards) can true polymorph into pitfiends, which have infinite per day. I can see this as maybe the end result of a Tiefling Warlock's journey and they finally ascend to their ultimate form.
For the purpose of this, let's assume that's not going to be the case for infinite, and we want a finite option without having to change everything about our character. Ok, it's time for some math per combination, and for the sake of this, we are going to use the DMG assumption of getting 2 short rests per day:
    Level 20 Draconic Soul Sorcerer:
    Spell slots allowing fireball: 15
Spell slots converted into sorcery points: 4 level 1 SS (8 pts) + 3 level 2 SS (9 pts) for a total of 17 sorcery points
Natural Sorcery Points: 20 + 4/short rest (8 per day average).
Total Sorcery Points: 45 per day (could be more if you spam more short rests, but this is average).
Total Fireballs: 24 of different levels. (This could also increase if you take metamagic adept feat for +2 sorcery points and have at least one more short rest)
Celestial Warlock 6/Draconic Soul Sorcerer 14:
    Spell Slots allowing Fireball: 10
Pact Magic Slots allowing Fireball: 2 (recharges on short rest, so an average of 6 per day)
    Natural Sorcery Points: 14
Sorcery Points from Spells: 17 (Same as pure sorc)
    Total SP: 31
Total Fireballs / Day: 18 on different levels + 2 per short rest. Average of about 22 per day (Potentially even more)
    Evocation Wizard 20:
    Spell Slots allowing Fireball: 15
Arcane Recovery: 3 fireballs + 1 level 1 spell per day.
Signature Spells: 1 Fireball + something else level 3 free once per day
Total Fireballs: 19 (Although to be honest, I'd use the level 9 SS to become a pit fiend for one hour for the basically infinite fireballs for that time)
There's one more build that we have to address, and it's a weird one.
Drakewarden Ranger 15/Warlock 5 (Drake's breath is basically a more flexible fireball in terms of damage type, and is improved to 10d6 at level 15. You can use it once free, and then it recharges on a long rest unless you spend at least a 3rd level slot)
Spell slots for breaths/fireballs: 5 (+1 free breath per long rest, so 6 total)
Pact Magic slots for breaths/fireballs: 2 per short rest
Total: 8 (or 12 per day average)
Ok, so obviously, that last one was never going to be as much as the pure magic classes, but this way, you can look cool riding on the back of a dragon doing it! If we are going to be honest here.... aside from the pit fiend perma morph/change, wizards (And whoever else gets access to shapechange or true polymorph) are probably the absolute best option here if they use the level 9 slot for a one hour only pit fiend. They have sculpt spells (so yeet those balls everywhere you want) and various damage increasing abilities on fireball as well. Second place, in my opinion, probably goes to the sorlock, because you can pick up ritual casting at the same time through warlocks and have more use otherwise with level 3 rituals. It's not to say that pure sorcerer is bad... on the contrary, it's going to dish out tons of damage and be pretty flexible with all those sorcery points as well, but it lacks the utility that the other class combos/options can bring to the table. At least, this is from what i've found.

  • @PiroMunkie
    @PiroMunkie Год назад +1

While lacking the boosts of Draconic Sorcerer and Celestial Warlock, if you just go straight Divination Wizard you can convert 4th+ level spell slots into 3rd level spell slots at a 1:1 ratio which is better overall than using metamagic to convert sorcerery points into spell slots. You break even on the total number of fireballs compared to a 20th level Sorcerer, but you have the benefit of the intel gained by casting Divination spells at 4th+ level. So you're sacrificing much less than the sorcerer.
Edit - Actually it just occurred to me I forgot about a couple Wizard features. Namely Arcane Recovery which can recover up to 10 levels worth of spells at level 20, as well as their signature spell at 20. Arcane Recovery works out to an additional 3 Fireballs (2 3rd level, 1 4th level), and Signature Spells can be cast once for free per short rest.
If we assume the two short rests again, that means a Level 20 Divination Wizard can cast 15 Fireballs from 3rd+ spell slots alone, plus 3 Fireballs from Arcane Recovery, plus 3 Fireballs from Signature spell for a total of 21 Fireballs. In addition, you still have all your 1st and 2nd level spells, as well as the benefit of every Divination spell you used to recycle your spell slots.
So the Sorlock is casting 20ish Fireballs per day with 2 short rests. The Divination Wizard is casting up to 40 spells per day by using divination spells at 4th+ level to recycle 3rd-5th level slots. 21 of those are Fireball. Of the 40, 12 of them need to be 4th+ level Divination spells. The remaining 7 are your 1st and 2nd level spells. This isn't even accounting for the fact the Wizards are ritual casters and Sorcerers aren't, as well as the Wizard's 1st and 2nd level Spell Masteries which give them a 1st and 2nd level spell at will.

Elemental Adept and Flames of P... aren't mutually exclusive here. "You *can* treat any 1 on a damage die as a 2", so you aren't forced to. So reroll the 1's with FoP and if the second roll is also a 1, "you must use the new roll", this is where elemental adepts kicks in and you can treat that 1 as a 2.
Some other spell commendations. Bypassing your own fire resistance with elemental adept sucks but Tasha's Otherworldly Guise could get you immunity for a combat. Alternatively If you really want to watch the world burn, Draconic Transformation can give you the equivalent of a bonus action fireball with a larger aoe every turn [30' radius circle when delivered from above the battlefield] for a minute, 2 minutes if you extended spell it.
Also catnap deserves a mention if you go more than 6 levels into warlock. Peace out while someone is casting a ritual and wake up with hp restored and 2 4th+ level slots for the cost of a 3rd level one.

So that's an opportunity to use stunning strike. Depending on your DM, you may only have one combat per short rest so it's crazy that you can it that often. Also, consider pairing monks against casters in the context of this discussion because martial don't get the opportunity to cast fireball. I agree in terms of ranking classes, monk falls at the bottom due to resource management and low HP. However for this one niche, four elements monks actually have something to offer.

The synergies are niche, but there are some cool ones. Wolf totem with battlesmith, magic power armor infusion for int-boosted grapples and stuff. Taking mobility spells like jump and Longstrider can be cast before you rage and don't need concentration.
I could see a cool build being something of a mecha-dragoon, who uses elk totem and the jump spell, with magic powered armor for stupid long jumping and grapple shenanigans. Like, being able to high jump 10+feet in the air while grappling people to body slam them prone and beat them down with thunder gauntlets (which can be used with strength)

You can only turn one spell slot into Soercery Points per turn, then wait till your next turn to turn those Sorcery Points into a spell slot. Though, I imagin you'd be doing all this converting prior to combat. Eitherway, is an interesting build idea.

So the point is to take Goliath as your race + fathomless warlock. First 3 levels you are playing as basic warlock. When you reach 4th level you take pact of the blade and 'moderately armoured' feat. On 5th level you need to take thirsting blade and tomb of levisthus evocations. Put on some medium armor, grab a shield and a rapier as your pact weapon.
Before the combat starts you cast Armor of Agathis on yourself. Then you go fight in melee range. Whenever you get hit (and the damage is worth it) use your racial ability to negate some points of damage and prolong the Armor of Agathis effect. If you take to much damage from one attack use tomb of levisthus. At 6th level you can use your reaction to negate 1d8 points of damage with your tentacle of the deep and there's no limit for this reaction. This build lets you deal a lot of damage from Armor of Agathis since like level 5, you can use Spirit Shroud to deal more cold damage or Summon Shadow Spawn to reduce the movement speed of your enemies and make it hard for them to escape fighting you in melee. It becomes better at level 7 when you will get the spell slot to cast Shadow of Moil. This build is inspired by Frost subclass of Death Knight from WoW.

@@DnD_Daily this build is incredibly action effective, because you always have use for your reaction, bonus action (tentacle) and action as well. You can both deal and take a lot of damage effectively. However this build is not op and DM can nerf you by throwing archers or mages against your group.

I'm pretty sure a level 20 wizard gets the most Fireballs.

Minor point- Can’t convert spells into sorcery points just slots. So unless a class or species has a slot attached to the spell it is not a slot.

Ah yes, casting 18 fireballs at lvl 20 is amazing! Too bad upcasting of damage spells is never actually worth it, especially at those ridiculous levels.. building your entire character around fireball sounds fun in theory, but is horrible in practice..
Also, nobody ever reaches those levels in an average campaign..
