Hooray for getting to see this. I have the first piece on vinyl, and it was the first Renate Holm I heard, other than her Operetta album with Werner Krenn, held by the library when I was 22. Her nuance of inflection in music is astonishing, and reveals layers of emotion and character like no other singer I know of in the ingenue repertoire.
A great pick, Megadim. I wonder how the prevalent class prejudices could be openly expressed through these pieces in such a beautiful manner. Nothing we have today comes remotely close. Opera lifts these otherwise sensitive topics to joy and beauty in the least and to sublime at best. I really loved the costume art here. In plots like this one, there is generally forgiveness and acceptance and it is in good fun, unlike some like Rigoletto. Especially loved the second piece. It is indeed magical. I just knew the story of the original Shakespeare play. I believe this is where they set up the forest for the finale in which Flastaff ends up comically embarrassed.
Besides this, I am not really aware of Renate Holmes! But Austria was great to maintain TV actors who played operatic repertoire. Even in India, the real talent still comes from stage actors and they are beloved, though the musical drama actors rarely touch Bollywood (probably considering it too corrupt, which is most likely true). The oldest singer+actor here (Suraiya) who was really good and considered movies died in 2004. The golden age of Bollywood music is agreed upon as 1960-80s. I wonder how similar this is even with the recordings of the Austrian opera scene!
Renate Holm was a great talent with an exceptionally long and multi-faceted career. She lived and performed in Austria most of her life, but this particular film was made for German TV.
