This was the exact explanation I needed: the hopper tests whether there is a hopper below it before moving to the next. Now my understanding of comparators is complete! Mumbo, you've helped me complete a week's worth of trial and error!

Isn't it easier to create a tunnel with a hopper at the end to "catch" all the thing you throw into the hole? Wouldn't it be faster than design 3?
***** some people dont want free floating items
*****
Yes you can do that, You just need a fast clock to spew items out of a dropper facing down, and make a 1x1 tube surrounded with blocks straight down.
Items arriving at the bottom can be collected or further transported with a water stream.
Could you make a sorting system that can be used for unstackable items?
MrSimpsondennis Not really, short of command blocks matching the item ID or something (unless of course you're sorting unstackables as a catagory itself, in which case an overflow chest would catch them all). The whole trick to the filtering system is that you fill the hopper in such a way that the *only* items it can take in are ones that stack with the items already in it.
Mumbo demonstrates the more expensive system where all of the items are the item being filtered. There's an alternative method where you have 1 of the item you want to filter, and the other 21 are filler items like dirt...this has a caveat that if you try and run this filler item through the system, then it will get pulled out and thrown into your chests alongside the item that's 'supposed' to be there, though this isn't as much of a problem in a setup where you're guaranteed *not* to have that item, such as mob farms and such.
The rest...well, xisumavoid probably explains it better in his 'How comparators work' video, but what happens is that if there are *any* items in a hopper and a comparator is connected to it, the comparator outputs a signal strength of 1. The math is a little too much to go into here, but if a hopper contains 22 normally-stackable (and by normal, I mean items that stack to 64..unstackables, or those that stack to different maxes like eggs mess up the math), the signal strength remains 1...but if you add a single additional item, the signal strength jumps up to 2. This serves to power that second piece of redstone, which then powers the part that unlocks the hopper in the bottom row *just* long enough for the hopper to pull that 1 item (from the first stack, the items you want filtered) out and into the chest. This drops the item count to 22, which drops the output signal to 1 again, and in turn locks the bottom hopper so that it can't pull any more items out.
I love the part where he says “Hoppah”
It is his accent and i am part british so i have that accent too:D

If you don’t want to leave all your diamonds in the sorting system to make it work, just put one diamond in the first slot of the hopper, and fill the rest with 21 of an item you’re not going to sort. If you do sort that filler item, the system will break. It’s usually a good idea to put dirt or cobblestone because they’re so easy to find, but you should rename it to make sure you won’t accidentally sort dirt and break everything. Another idea is to sort out dirt first (with a hopper full of 22 dirt items) and use dirt as a filler in all other hoppers, because then you know that dirt isn’t going to get to them.
Qbe Root A much simpler solution is to sort the cobblestone much earlier in the system and if there is excess burn it.
Ik This was 4 yrs ago but ty
just put in a filter using dicferent filter items for your 1st filter blocks in very first position in your sorting hopper line
I rename some items as 'hopperpoop' then the item to sort gets the first slot.

These videos are so beautiful for learning simple starts to complex redstone systems that can be used individually on their own. And I am thankful, for one, Mumbo. I look forward to more interesting HI-LO Techs.
8 years later, this is the exact information I was looking for. Thanks, mumbo for being so smart
Mumbo, you would be the best teacher ever. Your students grades would be off the charts with all the enthusiasm you posses!
Thnx for the hopper mechanics at the beginning now it all makes sense!
Thanks mumbo and every other youtubers who use this system. The 21 items tip was most important for me. I think I can save the third row of hoppers and use water instead. Cheaper that way.
Thank you for taking the time to explain why everything works instead of just how to build it!
These video are the most helpful things on the internet, keep up the good work!
Instead of 22 of the item, you can use signs in the last 4 slots and then 6 items in the first slot... saves a lot more of that item
I swear this is the only video on RUclips that actually shows how to build a basic storage system for complete noobs like me. Thanks mumbo jumbo!
thank you Mumbo, just started playing with a friend and needed a better understanding of storage and sorting
THIS IS MY FAVOURITE SERIES! Apart from practical skills....
Nicely done. New to MC and this is the best vid I have seen explaining how they work.
mumbo was so energetic back then 😭
The bottom chest be like: "Yo, that's mine." LOL
Great video. Love the series. The item sorter is smaller than the one I've been using too! Thanks.
Thanks, like seriously.. Ever since 1.5 I've wanted to learn a bit more about hoppers.. I know the basics, but thank you a ton for making this video. Love ALL the videos, and keep them up :)
Thanks for all the effort you put into your vids!!
This is why I love you Mumbo, actually there's loads of reasons but this is one :D
Love the vid, Mumbo. This was a great idea for a series.
Greetings from 2020. I'm surprised the sorter was around for soo long. I only learned recently of it (also through you)
been playing this game for years and needed an explanation. followed you on hermitcraft, never seen this vid before. now my confusion is explained. cheers m8.
Great Advice Mumbo! I understand Redstone a bit more now!
This is a very usefull video because i have no idea how hoppers work. Thank you mumbo
Og Mumbo still making quality content
5 years has passed .......
OMG
Actually, the hopper doesn't check if there's another hopper below or anything, but they just follow the sequence oficial "picking from above, wait, transfer to a where it is pointing" Because of the delay being in the middle, the first hopper picks something, and in the del delay time, the one below picks from above, and so on. Anyway, great video, very simple and easily explained!
i so needed this Mumbo! THANKS!! :D
6:00 always could'nt make sorting systems, but now I now that a Simple Redstone Contraption is needed, thank you mumbo
Yes, Mumbo! Yes! Great vid. Favorited :D Awesome series
oh my gosh mumbo THANKYOU! i have never known how till know how to do a sorting system
Nice review from basics to more complicated uses! :)

Dear God. This was a video suggestion for today, without me watching a single Mumbo video during the day.
I remember this series so well, but I didn't have an actual channel at the time so I couldn't save videos.
Geez. Memories. And my goodness, has your voice changed!
18 years old to 22. Minecraft version 1.7.4 (2 days prior) to the now 1.13 snapshot 17w50a (December 11, 2017)
Oli, you're amazing. And your intro AND outro _phrases_ have not changed. The physical ones have.
You didnt explain Hopper Clocks?
I was looking forward for it since you showed one at the beginning AND at the end of the video. That is tease + mocking all in one package!
Watching this, and watching him now, he has gotten alot calmer xD
Amazing video Mumbo!
Finally i understood the mechanic behind. Thank You!
The only thing that miss is an HI-LO Tech playlist so we can find your video more "quickly & easily"
thanks mumb! you're always the best!
THNX, I SEARCHED SO LONG FOR THIS.
Love this series!
A better way to configure items to accept items that stack to 64 is to use items that stack to 16 as filler, like bowls or snowballs.
Fill hopper slots 2, 3, 4, and 5 with snowballs, for instance, with these stack sizes in any order: 6, 5, 5, and 5. This will let the hopper reserve only one item (a single diamond, for instance, as a sorter key.
How it works is that since small-stack items send stronger signals than large-stack items, it doesn't take as many idle items in slot 1 to unlock the hopper below.
If you want to lock the system if it starts filling up, you can feed comparators off the back end of the redstone dust and feed it back to the initial hopper in the line. This will prevent any more items from traveling down the line and keep your sorter from turning into a mess.
Items that tend to accumulate in enormous masses should be given either very large storage areas (stone, dirt, etc). Constantly renewable resources from automatic farms or simply prolific ones like wheat seeds can be triggered to fire into an incinerator if their storage gets too full.
Love hi lo tech and love you mumbo !
This was one of the first videos when researching minecraft hopper storage
Another great build!
Thank you
Fun tip! You only need to put 1 of each item in the hoppers (5 items)... it will *fill* up to 18 in slot 1 _on it's own,_ and then start dropping to the next hopper.
Simplest sorter I've seen thanks
Man, I love your intro!
There is a caveat with using trapped chests with hoppers- trapped chests produce redstone signals when opened which disable the hoppers right next to them. So if there's a MASSIVE inflow of items and you keep one of the trapped chests open long enough some of the items might overflow. I know Mumbo's aware of this how could he not be, but just something to keep in mind when using trapped chests and hoppers together.
Now we just need like Hopper-pipelines instead of having to make loads of Hoppers to make a transfer. - Yea, we have things like water-streams, but that's annoying to deal with. Besides, you can only go so far and if you want to make sure the items don't get caught you need to connect them by going down a block every 8 or so (to where the water cuts off). Then there's the annoyance of cornering and so on. - Up and down isn't much of an issue, but even that could be simplified in a fair way by just making pipelines.
What I suggest they add to the game is... well, iron pipes, perhaps just called Pipe(s), which you simply make with 3 Iron Ingots placed vertically, and perhaps you even get like 3-6 out of that. - Make it so that those Pipes interact with nothing but Hoppers and other items that take in items, kind of like how you have Redstone items, and then there will be no issues of interference of incompatibilities. People could even update their existing Redstone creations by simply replacing the Hoppers or even water-lines with Pipes.
I just feel like this, for one thing, would make it more reasonable for creating transferring-lines, so instead of 5 Iron Ingots and 8 Wood Planks (for a Chest) for every single block of the line you just use 3 Iron Ingots. - Imagine a line of just 8 blocks; That's just 24 Iron Ingots (which is still quite a lot) as opposed to 40 Iron Ingots and 64 Wood Plank blocks. That's basically almost half the resources or less considering you don't need all that stupid amount of wood.
But another thing is that it would create an opportunity for less lag. Apparently there's a certain amount of lag introduced with uncovered Hoppers because of "item search". Well, I don't know if that would be eliminated with these "Pipes" that I made up having just an in and out with no constant detection on a third end (unless something is attached). But if it would still act like that, they could make it so that every piece of Pipe just refers back to the very first piece of Pipe of its line and doesn't do anything actively unless the rest of the line is doing something. - I don't know, something like that.
On your last design, I think a better design would be to use a hopper leading into a dropper with an automatic detection system. Then all you need is a shaft to direct the items into the hopper at the bottom. A little more redstone, but much less resource intensive with wood and iron.
For design 2 it actually saves a lot of items, especially if you want to sort diamonds and so on, if you fill the hoppers with snowballs and put the item you want to sort in the first slot. Then you will only have two items stuck in the system! As long as you never put snowballs in the input this works just fine
You could also rename any item, including dirt, in an anvil and as long as you don't put in any items with the same name (very unlikely) it will work also.
I started playing Minecraft again and searched fo an item filter , this video popped up and i clicked because its mumbo and it turns out i all ready gave the video like from when i watched when it came out :)
I love that he ACTUALLY YELLS IN THE MIC ALLO EVERYONE!
I know this is a really old video, but I was not expecting him to sound this different omg
Old video, but thanks for making these awesome vids. Still get confused sometimes on hopper flow functions.
6:48 - On Minecraft Wiki you can read about hopper's "pulling" and "pushing" mechanics, described by you in Design 1. But here, there's important thing to note, where I'm showing the definition of Hopper from Wiki as source; let's say we have two hoppers connected vertically, and it's a fragment of a longer pipe (the hopa-hopa alternative). When the upper hopper has no items to pull from an item source higher, it'll push its items down to the lower hopper. But then, that lower hopper, will pull another item from its upper buddy at the same time; suma sumarum, in this kind of situation, hoppers work with double speed. So giving more iron to the construction enables to highten transport speed.
My suggestion is a pattern of hoppers and containers in a 2:1 ratio; 2 hoppers, 1 chest, 2 hoppers, 1 chest... This will let us play that double;transport situation quite often, like in the end of a big transport job.
And last, but not least: tl;dr? Read that again.
And for a rather cheap downwards item elevator you also could use a dropper at the top, dropping all the items coming in, and a hopper at the bottom catching them.
So old jumbo happy birthday from the future
Thanks! Need this for my gunpowder farm
Thank you mumbo! :)
hoppers are useful for tnt cannons, they act as a magazine for the cannon and you can store alot of tnt in them, the magazine consist of chest and hoppers and alot of tnt cause thats the ammo and the thing below the bottom hopper is the dispenser that shoots the tnt.
detailed and helpful explanation, thankiu!
I've found that for longer downwards transportation systems, you could use two comparators, three hoppers, a random block, a random item and a dropper.
Saves such a big lot of iron, wood and time even though wood is very easy to get.
Aw, it's baby Mumbo!
Thanks again mumbo!
But the last design just blew my mind. I'm gonna get sooo many hoppers back. Hoppers, hoppers, hoppers, hoppers for days!
love this series! so incredibly useful
hoppers be like "yo that's mine"
This moment when u read a comment about a video and it happens at the same moment
One other feature: If you put 2 hoppers under a double chest, you will be able to pull 2 items from the chest at a time. Now this becomes interesting because the hoppers pull simultaneously (or as close to it as possible) and therefore splits anything you put into the chest in half. You could put furnaces under each of those hoppers to smelt 2x as fast. Or to double up on storage. Or to insert into multiple sorting systems. Or whatever.
Omg this video i so old nd very cool love ya mumbo #stayathome #staysafe
Excellent video once again Mumbo keep up the great work =]
I for one feel like a moron using the straight line of hoppers going down haha! I will for sure be using the item sorting in my server videos =]
7:20 hopahopahopahopahopa
😆 Your great dude
For the item sorter, you can also put 1 sign into each of the last 4 slots in the item filter and then you only need about 7 of each item.
Mumbo, I wish I had 1/10th of an understanding of redstone as you.
Oh how I love the old intro
Ya must be nice to have hoppers I play xbox and I can't wait till we get them. Nice video
Thank you mumbo jumbo!!! U r a awesome!!!!
You are my favourite redstone RUclipsr
Normal hoppers: grab items and move them to a container
Mumbo's hoppers when a hopper beneath has an item: "Yo that's mine!"
From a year ago in 2020 to 2014 his voice is so high pitch
By the way, with your hopper/comparator system, what you can do to item sort your hoppers is to use 4 unstackable items in the last four slots of your hopper(s) then but 63 of the item you want to sort. With the comparator, you would put a redstone block with a redstone dust on top of it next to the subtraction part of your comparator to make it so it outputs one more length of signal into what you want to run. You would also have a hopper on top of the hopper you want to sort so that way items you want moving on to different chests actually go to those chests. That is just my take on it, I will have a video up on my channel when my recording equipment starts working and I have the time to upload the video.
Holy shit Mumbo's voice has deepened over the years 0_0
pls make some moooooooooooore HI-LO Tech I loved it so much and I liked all of your vids Thank you for the Redstones... Now I understand redstone !! :- )
You dont need to fill sorting hopper with 23 items, use 1 item and 21 stick or something else that wont get sorted..a bit cheaper :)
Nice video, keep it up!
i know this is a old video but i like your commentator ways like "yo i want thats item" i find it funny. wierd
Hey mumbo,
Can i ask you what the song in your intro is?
