    As @artdiffuser spotted, there is no way to stack more than one of the Stackable Circular Filter Trays. You can have ONLY ONE. You can stack 4x5.65 filter trays ones only.

      This Tilta matte box is actually whole nice system. When you see exploded view of it there are plenty of different accessories.
      But Tilta actually fails at the marketing/instructional level. They got some manual like videos on YT, but they are quite general and vague.
      It's really hard to guess which accessories are compatible with each other (because some unfortunately aren't).

      @@JoATTech Appreciate your curiosity. I asked Tilta support what the maximum expandability would be and using 2x dual circular trays with its holder tray would yield a max of 5. I'm still to explore whether 5 would ever be needed but I'd prefer to have the option than otherwise, but the extreme cases would be to have variable ND with lens streaks filter (love flares), black mist, polarizer. You can argue polarizer with the streak filter defeats the purpose of having both on, so yeah, I don't think I'd ever exceed 4 if even three but it gives me a peace of mind knowing its achievable in case the job calls for it, but I doubt it will. :)

      @JoATTech  2 года назад

      @@JackMajor I'd say VND and polarizer won't work together, but I haven't checked it myself. You can come back to Tilta support and ask them that question.
      Also seems that VND gives some color cast so do your own research before buying. I'm switching to IRNDs from VAXIS atm. Got them ordered but got only ND2 so far so it's hard to say they are any better.

    For the thumbscrew issue, you could go to a hardware store and source normal screws with the same threading. It doesn't allow you to remove the second tray as easily, but if you're always using at least one additional tray, that solves the problem with the adjustement between different sized lenses.

    • @JoATTech
      @JoATTech  2 года назад

      That actually a nice idea. I do not plan to remove second stage, so even gluing in will work :).
      I found another solution (additional SmallRig plane) which solves 2 problems at once. Although I thing there are still some very small lenses that cause this problem on A6x00 series, so I have to look for the screws.
      I bet they are imperial, so might be hard to source in Poland :(.

    Btw, regarding the problem you had with the rods hitting the mattebox: It can be easily fixed by using a baseplate riser that clamps on the 15mm rods raises the camera above the rods. There are many types and some made specifically for your camera. It's generally better to have your camera raised higher from the rods since the mattebox is adjustable vertically.

      I know, I even link one in the description. But I actually wanted my rig to be quite minimalistic and not tall at all, to be able to put it easily (without deassembling) into my PELI case. So it's more my fault then matte box fault, although if they make these screws removable it will be better (and made originally 3 tapped holes in the rod clamp).

    Great review thank you. I have one question for you, do you think it is possible to put the Tilta ND with the motor from the mirage and THEN the CPL Polarizer 95mm after on a second rack. I have the motor and the nd and it is very big, I am afraid to order the tilta Polarizer and a second stack for nothing... Without the motor on top I have no doubt of course.

    • @JoATTech
      @JoATTech  Год назад +1

      I kinda doubt it would work. Since VND is set of polarizers. There are new VNDs for which you can also set polarization to your liking, but they work on the principle you set ND first then you rotate whole filter to set polarization.
      I think it won't work with VND + CPL combo. But I might be wrong :D.

    Do you think single ND Filters are good to work with? Wouldnt you pick the VND just for convenience and fix color cast with WB setting?

    • @JoATTech
      @JoATTech  2 года назад +1

      At the moment I got only VND. The problem is when you have to match shots with and without VND. Simple WB change is not enough, but primary wheels adjustment should be enough. I guess cross pattern is more annoying thing. It's hard to spot it on the monitor, but when you review footage on your computer you see it straight away.
      Actually single NDs are cheaper. Mattebox alone is 119$, with VND is 369$ but you also got nucleus mount and mattebox rod adapter. Alone VND cost is around 280$.
      Depends what is your camera base ISO. My BMPCC6k is ISO400. So I would use 5stops ND mostly. I can compensate a bit with ISO settings.
      If I would buy it now after knowing how VND performs I would buy dual circular frame + ND5 and ND2. That way I would have 2,5 and 7 stops.
      If your camera base ISO is different then you might prefer 3+5. Or 2,4,6 = 2,4,6,8,10 if you combine them.
      Individual NDs are 50$ each and dual frame is 39$. So 2 NDs + frame = 139$. And you got 3 levels of ND without cross pattern and color cast. If you buy 3 filters you got 5 or 6 levels depends which NDs you choose and it's less than 200$. Of course its a bit more annoying to change them, but generally you can get away with 1 ND during a session and compensate via ISO.

    • @Milan-cf1xe
      @Milan-cf1xe 2 года назад +1

      @@JoATTech Also one thought I had that I wanted to learn about lighting and ratios, using a light meter. When I use single NDs I know exactly how many stops i compensate, with the VND I can just guess. So for learning lighting and cinematography single NDs are better

    • @JoATTech
      @JoATTech  2 года назад

      Not sure it's so important. You got false colors to check if you are exposing correctly (or zebras or waveform).
      And what is printed on ND might not be exactly true 1stop might be 1.2. Not sure how accurate vaxis is.
      I guess in real cinema they use constant NDs.
      But BestBoy Adam (YT channel) shown when VND with motor is very useful, so check his video if you haven't seen it yet.

      I just checked with my Sigma 16mm and 18-35.
      And wide open on both there is not difference in vignetting with and without matte box. They are more or less 24mm and 27mm equivalent in FF terms.
      There is really minimal vignette on Sigma 16mm in 4:3 mode (photo). With 16:9 mode I can't see any.
      Can you see as experiment what happens if you stop the lens to F4, F5.6 and beyond? Does vignette disappears?
      Vignette is quite easy to remove in post with vignette filter reversed or power window in Davinci and exposure compensation.

    I have 27 tiffen 4x4 filter , can I use them with Tilta mirage ?

    • @JoATTech
      @JoATTech  Год назад

      The simple answer is no. Cause Mirage accepts 5.65x4 filters.
      But there is hope. Because there are few accessories which might be able to hold 4x4 filter. You would have to contact Tilta (or find owner of them) to see what is the distance between the holders. And if it's less than 4 inches you should be good to go.
      Unfortunatelly I do not own them.
      1) tilta.com/shop/rubber-hood-for-tilta-mirage/
      - here you lose possibility to use top flag, so it's a trade off.
      2) Combo of:
      tilta.com/shop/4x5-65-stackable-filter-tray-for-tilta-mirage/
      tilta.com/shop/4x5-65-stackable-filter-tray-holder-for-tilta-mirage/
      But this not accept all filters due to thickness limitation.
      And is quite expensive option.
      So you have to investigate it the filter you got is not avail as 95 circular or 5.65x4 rectangular.
      I'd say that 4x4 filter in 5.65x4 tray would not look very professional, so might be off-putting for some clients (even though it works).

    Using the stackable circular filter tray cause any vignetting?

    • @JoATTech
      @JoATTech  2 года назад +1

      As mentioned in video. It does not cause vignetting on BMPCC 6k + Laowa 12mm. This combo is ~18mm FF equivalent.
      I just checked Sony A6600 + Samyang 12mm F2. And there is really small vignetting in the corners. It's because A6600 got a but smaller crop factor and Samyang 12mm is wider than Laowa 12mm.
      Vignetting shows only when lens is focused to minimum focus distance. It disappears on different focus distances due to focus breathing.
      So any lens below 18mm (full frame equivalent) might cause vignetting with additional circular tray.

    • @bentonpix
      @bentonpix 2 года назад +1

    • @JoATTech
      @JoATTech  2 года назад +1

      @@bentonpix That is strange because it worked on my 12mm on S35, but this 12mm Laowa is more 13.5 then 12. So in FF terms is 20-21mm.
      When tried real 12mm on Sony APS-C I got vignette only on half of the focus range, cause this lens got quite a focus breathing :)
      Maybe Sony 20mm is a bit less than 20, that's why vignetting or maybe front element is big so it's closed to the edges of the circular tray. Or maybe it's because my 12mm is 2.8 not 1.8 as Sony so actually lens IRIS is smaller. This might be the case.
      Try stopping your 20mm Sony to F2.8 to see if you still got vignetting (or even F4) just as experiment.
      Definetely works 100% fine with sigma 18-35 @F1.8, which is 27-52 in FF terms.
