    Absolutely outstanding review of the first knife in the new Rough Ryder Reserve line. We appreciate your feedback and honesty about our new line. It's always nice to hear that your hard work pays off. I do want to provide a little bit of insight based on some of the things in the video that might be shed some more light on our thought process in making this line, and specifically this pattern.
    Most (but not all) of the patterns you're going to see in this line come from Kevin Pipes and Andy Armstrong digging through very old knife catalogs from IXL, Imperial, Schrade, Sheffield, etc. - some more than 100 years old. That's where this pattern started, and then it developed from there. Some of the patterns will be wholly new takes, modifications, or designs that have not - to our knowledge been on the market before (best example in Round 1 is the Kayak and the Bar Back that we're still waiting on as I write this).
    The Easy Open Razor base pattern came from and was inspired by an old catalog image (which I suspect is where most of the traditional makers start - why reinvent the wheel, right?), and then as the design came to fruition, Kevin Pipes specifically asked for a "one-armed bandit" in what was a plain razor knife style. We've done them in Rough Ryder before, but it's been a while. The specific shape of this one, however, was a back and forth between Kevin and Andy getting exactly what they wanted out of it. A rounded top edge that works but doesn't stab you in your pocket. So very nice to see someone notice that.
    As to what has influenced the Rough Ryder Reserve line styling, it's honestly a study of what the market appreciates in a premium traditional pocket knife over the last few years. Modern materials like Micarta, varied and higher grade steels D2 or even VG-10. Finishes like you might find on a very nice custom piece - brushed steel bolsters - brushed satin blades. Action that is far from where we were 10 years ago, heavy pull and loud walk and talk. Special features like "easy open" pulls, flush shields, etc - swapping out standard blades for new and different blade types. We've kept an eye on all of these things that you all want in a modern make of a premium slip joint pocket knife and that's exactly what we're drawing on to create the Reserve line. Premium quality and materials and the best price we can offer.
    Again, very nice review of the 01 pattern. We appreciate your sharing it with your audience. We look forward to hearing your take on newer models as they arrive. Round 2 should be coming in the near future with some more great patterns.

    I own all three and they have no gaps. Amazing fit, finish, and function. Extremely happy. I only own two GEC knives and really liking them. Rough Ryder Reserve will be given them some competition.

    I appreciate that Rough Ryder made these, and I hope they make more. I'm not really into most blue jeans micarta, otherwise, I might have bought this one. Hopefully, their success means they'll make more patterns and cover options. I would consider buying a RR reserve knife down the road.

    I would like to see a reserve version of the denim micarta work knife with the wharncliff blade in D2. I just order this one arm jack and am eagerly awaiting it's arrival.

    I been enjoying my one arm jack quite a bit. Wasn't sure about the denim micarta but once I got it in hand I really warmed up to it. I think it would be smart for SMKW to do this same frame with a couple blade options and cover options.

  • @davids9549
    @davids9549 3 года назад +2

    I have this one and I like it. If SMKW's goal was to have a pop at GEC then they've failed without a doubt, but if they're trying to just up their game and make something a bit different, then perhaps they've been more successful. Not that I'm dissatisfied with my 'standard' RRs - I have a few and their F&F is pretty damn good!
    That said, my example of this knife is far from perfect - the backspring has a bit of a gap and it sits a bit proud in the closed position, and the shield is mounted off-centre (yours isn't). Those things aside, it's done well and the materials are really good.
    I also bought and returned the Kayak because it's ridiculously fat in my opinion - you could fit another couple of blades in all that space!
    If RRR really wants to challenge GEC in the arena of traditionals, it needs to get back to the drawing board and put its knives on a diet and send them for some beauty treatment, because they lack elegance.

      The more I think about it the less I think their intention is to directly compete with GEC

    I'm not all that into the razors, so I passed on this one, but I did grab the other 2. I must say I'm impressed. Very good fit n finish, smooth action, good walk and talk, and no blade rub, which is an accomplishment for a 3 bladed knife. So many others I have do have blade rub. It's not quite up to a GEC standard, but it's pretty damn close, and for a whole lot less money. Definitely better than a Case. I'm wondering if the same factory does Brother knives. I have 3 of them that are pretty much on par with these, except they have better materials like VG10 and CF, but the prices are roughly the same. If RR keeps up the quality though, I will definitely be buying more. I love my GEC's, but unless it is a less popular pattern, they have just gotten to hard to get a hold of. I don't sell many of my knives, so I don't care about the resale value.

      Not a razor, a blade designed for someone who'd lost an arm or hand that can be snagged on fabric or wood to open.

    • @timbo4374
      @timbo4374 4 года назад

      @@davidmarshall7752 . I don't remember off hand where I read that, or who told me, whichever the case is, but I am aware of that. I've seen them called razor style blades on a few different sites, but It really doesn't matter what you call them in the end. You could call them a vagina, and I still wouldn't buy one. They just aren't my style. I'm glad they make them for those that need them for the very reason they were designed, especially if they are vets, or those who just like them. I think there should be a knife for every persons needs, wants, and tastes, but they just aren't for me no matter how good the fit and finish is, or what you name them. The same with the cotton samplers. They just don't speak to me.

  • @davidmayle6103
    @davidmayle6103 4 года назад +2

    They seem more along the line of Case. GEC is my go to for traditional if your lucky enough to get one. I've given up on Case due to the fit and finish. I'd try RRR one but its not replacing GEC.

    Looks great, and it's nice to see other makers competing in the space with GEC. I've been frustrated with other unnamed manufactures that have consistency and quality control issues. I think they should match GECs finish and attention to detail to compete at this price point though, especially being manufactured in China.

      @@KnifeThoughts Thanks man . The knives turned up . Hmmm . Well one was pretty near perfect in fit and finish . The other was slightly off on the blade grind . The worse thing is the kick is lower than the edge . It rolled the edge right where the spine pin is located . I haven’t tried letting the blade close on the nicer of the two as I’ll leave that boxed and unused .
      My verdict is in my buying experience of case both of these are at least equal to the best Case knives I’ve owned . They just , well leave me a bit underwhelmed . Nice and I love the design . There’s just something missing . A bit of soul maybe 🤔. I really need a GEC to compare as these may very well be closer to their quality than I realise .

    Wanted to add something about the smoothness of the action. Look at the corners of the tang,they're well rounded. Where on GEC they're allot more squared off. I think that allows a smoother transition between stops👍

    The one armed bandit pattern has been around since the end of the Civil War, so many veteran's came home without 2 arms that it was practically a necessity to issue a one hand opening knife, and its been a popular pattern ever since🔪🗡🔪🗡🔪🗡🔪🗡🔪🗡
