Been riding for close to 5 years, went from 300lbs obese guy to 210 fit guy with monster calves lol. Did mountain bike 1st with shocks, switched to hybrid performance for last 3 years and after breaking 2 frames from riding hard in pothot city (montreal), i switch to steel frame single speed. I always thought people were pretentious with their fixed gear stories how it's so much better blah blah blah.... well, i finally get it. @@DatBaataR It seems like a really bad idea to have wide bars in a crit race, just more likely to catch on other riders and crash, and less aerodynamic aswell but I guess they're not going too fast around that tiny track.
@@albr4 Exactly, that's what surprises me, not the fact they're flat necessarily, but that they're so wide. Surely in a crit race you need to find gaps and navigate around people so wide bars seems weird.
It’s because of the Bike Messenger culture. Haven’t you noticed that MANY riders were in jeans & sweaters or tshirts? Such races are all about skills. And you turn better in super tight corners with such flat bars. I’ve seen riders winning such specific races with flat bars over drops
YEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSS I love fixed gears to bits. Brilliant at climbing, sprinting and everything really, as long as the gear's right. Thinking of stripping the paint off mine and polishing the steel.

The bike you rode had some kind of belt drive system that wasn’t really mentioned. Can you tell us about it? What who how etc and what was it like to ride.
@@mklightemup3567 most of the fixed gear riders you see on the streets are only riding it because it's trendy, they don't actually do it for performance and don't push hard on them. I ride with a 52 on front and 16 on back and cycle at about 24 mph average in the city and up to 30mph when I go out of the saddle. For me I'm passing all the road cyclists with full pro outfit and carbon road bikes, they just can't keep up. The only time someone on a road bike can go faster than me is up hills because my gear is too big.
MK LIGHT EM UP well I just love riding bikes no matter if I'm on my road, mtb or fixed gear always with a big smile on my face. So here's a big pat on your back for 'beating' everyone. Well done you. Oh and I bet you don't use that gear up hills so I'll be the one passing you ahaha 🚴💨🐢
is lining up the chain so that when your cranks are at 3 ocklock the valve ends up at the top or bottom like the fixie equivalent of lining up tyre logos?
Bradley8936 it’s actually stiffer and stronger. Used for BMX racing. It’s way HEAVIER that’s the problem and why it’s rarely used in fixed gear racing. About 500-600g
i want a fixed gear bike but i tried the one my mate have and i was cruising until i forgot it was a fixed gear and stopped pedaling and almost fellXDXD
More content on fixed gears please! But enough with the 'for the crashes' nonsense, weight doesn't make a difference in fixed gears quite the same way as it does for traditional bikes. Aluminum is simply a good material for the price considering you can build a competitive bike for just over $1k usd, fancier materials just become extra.
Most of the time aluminum frames aren't for crashing, since the crashes aren't near as common as geared crits unlike the common potrayal. With no fancy kit to add on to the weight these bikes get pretty light, so there's not much of a point to investing more for carbon especially given the price. Saves money for tires.
Can anybody tell me why the bikes dont use longer reach frames instead of using a traditional stem? I am thinking a lot about this especially on full suspension bikes and MTB but to me it seems going for a longer frame without a stem on a road race bike would also make sense.
Most fixed gears have track racing geometry, which tends to give you a shorter top tube compared to the seat tube. It lets the rider get into a very aerodynamic and aggressive position, but isn't the best for urban riding or street races like these.
@@franciss2529 The thing is that if you have a longer frame the reach would be the same to the handlebar as you would not need a stem to further extend the handlebar. The only thing I can come up with is that the shorter wheelbase is the only positive but if we would lengthen the frame the rake angle would be steeper and it would counter the longer wheelbase. The bike would be stiffer. So I dont really see any negative points with ditching a long stem in favor for a longer frame.
@@Pillokun Fair point, and I agree that for this kind of event a shorter stem and longer frame would be ideal. That's the annoying thing with fixed gears- they appeal more to track riders than any others. I've struggled to find a wheelset for them that is near 1500g! Long stems on shorter frames work really well for road bikes imo.
Why is there so much more variety (frames, components etc) in fixed gear bikes compared to road bikes? Are the components for fixed gear compatible with road bikes?
Megan L Most components are, but wheels and chainrings usually aren't. This is because they're made for track racing (this means no braketracks, freehubs and casettes on the wheels). the chainrings can probably be used on a one-by drivetrain.
Cranks can be compatible, you just have to find single speed chainrings with the same bolt spacings as standard road chainrings - this is how I managed to use Hollowtech cranks on my fixed gear bike which saves quite a bit of weight!
