Thank you! This is very interesting and well shot. Spectaculr on the way up. I recently did this hike (some ice higher up but no snow). Wld love to see some shots of the foot placement to assess security and the snow depth. This looks smoother in some respects on the arête and up the final snow slope and on the summit due to the snow covering but I presume the chance of slipping is far greater. Wld love to know more.

Thank you, I got lucky that morning and ended up being the first one over the route so the snow had not been cut. You are right the snow on the arete was fresh and over waist deep in some areas, which made for slow progress. I had the crampons and ice axe in use throughout the traverse and just took my time crossing. The views were great and wish I had taken a decent camera. Hope this helps..Best wishes Kenny

Beautiful! What a day. This was the first proper hill walk I ever did, in August 1980! Been up the Ben in winter since, but only the tourist path, now I have to do this! Was the snow on the ridge soft and powdery, or hard and cramponable?

Hi Duncan, definitely crampons the whole way . Was very icy from Carn Beag Dearg and when I reached the arete it was covered with deep powdery snow and ice underfoot. It was hard work at times as there had been no one else over it that morning. The final section up the SE ridge of the ben was also hard work but was an excellent day. Best wishes Kenny

Good timing - you must have set off early as it looks like you had the ridge to yourself. What was the guy in shorts doing?

Simon Heptonstall Yes I was very lucky with the weather and I got to make the first steps over the ridge that day, Not sure but he mentioned to others that he had ran up the front side using micro spikes...

Wow, incredible! For someone with a fear of heights how would you say this would go?

Hi purplemonleyelephant. thanks for feedback. Not sure...the ridge section is obviously the most exposed section and the slopes seem quite extreme but with sensible winter mountain precautions and a steady gait....A traverse without the snow is also rewarding and offers plenty of handholds and scrambling opportunities and of course the views...Cheers Kenny

I presume it's possible to this route with just crampons and without axes?
    Thanks

+Mike Clayton Hi Mike, I would not like to say one way or another but personally I would definitely not like to attempt the ridge in winter conditions without an ice axe and crampons. Cheers Kenny
