after two years of work, my book is finally out. i went to the midwest with some friends to film this adaptation of one of the essays. thanks for your support over the years guys and always allowing me to try new things
This was so intriguing. You did a fantastic job and that visuals were well done. I don't remember the last time I bought a book, but I will definitely be buying yours. Congratulations on the release.
27tl Comparing the book to an album and this excerpt to a song, it's set up like how a music video would be. Stephen King hasn't taken a chapter out of his book and adapted it, so it's just an interesting concept. I don't mean a literal music video, just using that as a reference.
I was one of those kids sitting on a couch in Grand Forks! Still have your CD some 6 or 7 years later. So glad you finally got recognition for your work!
See, THIS is how you make a video. The visuals don't mirror the words precisely (that's just cheesy) but they complement and enrich the meaning of the words. Beautifully shot, lots of attention to detail (especially period-based details), and chock full of meaning. Seriously great job!
theoriginaledi Completely agree. Do you know of any other videos of this similar style? I've been looking around RUclips for things like these but I can't find it.
I'm a comedian who just got into doing traveling college shows, I have never seen a video more relatable. Watsky, thanks for being such a genuine artist.
Probably been to some of the same colleges where it was filmed maybe? I recognize that college where he gets out of his car as Morningside College in Sioux City, IA. And he knows his small Iowa cities; Sioux City is called Sewer City for a reason.
I bought the dead tree version, and I typically despise audiobooks, but I love the way you speak your thoughts and this tempts me to get a copy of the audiobook as well. Thanks for confirming that you narrated it yourself!
Listening to this I was just thinking "I REALLY hope this has an audio book version" seeing that it does, I will be purchasing this as soon as I get paid.
It's really strange for me to relate to a video about touring the US because the usual fodder for such anecdotes is coastal or Texas way, but to have places here in the Midwest spoken about not with ire but with actual interest and insight really piqued my curiosity in your book, George. Thanks for this. I'd love it if it were also available in audio book because your cadence and timbre add so much to the experience.
It is also available in audio book form www.audible.com/pd/Bios-Memoirs/How-to-Ruin-Everything-Audiobook/B01FKK5WQ6/ref=a_search_c4_1_1_srTtl?qid=1466121474&sr=1-1
I know this video is kinda old, but I recently read a comment that said you made this video out of pocket, that is amazing. An artist has such a passion for what he does that he creates in another form. I have to say this video is truly inspiring and is probably the most well made video I have ever seen!! Cheers, Grant
when i come back to this video every year or so, i always get a little. sniffly. hearing about the travel routine, the identical rural towns, the empty community college campus centers.. its really real, really genuine. i think i could go for an audiobook right about now
I love how he totally embodied the awkwardness. I was cringing at the silence and I loved it. Such a down to Earth guy that everyone can relate to. Love you GW!
I watched this late at night and probably 5 minutes after i was done watching I fell asleep. i had a dream about the boy who fell down and suffocated in wheat. it was about what he did before that. good dream.
If you made your whole book into a longer film of this quality or a series, I would watch it (and buy it) in a heartbeat. Love your work; it always resonates. Will definitely be buying the book and audiobook as soon as I can!
Every single word that comes out of your mouth, a song or not, sounds poetic and is incredibly relaxing. Thank you for being an amazing artist, Watsky.
Hi Watsky. My name is Ashe, and I'm from Salina Kansas. I lived there my whole life. I've listened to you sense I was 11 and I'll be 20 next month, and that can't seem like very long I guess, but it's nearly half my life. So thankyou. You touched me in a way you can't understand. You're the reason I took up competitive public speaking, I used your poetry book too. Which let me travel the country, and gave me the drive to leave Kansas. I've moved away from Salina last year. You captured it so well I felt like I could have walked right outside and been there. It felt like things went full circle in a strange way. Thankyou you for helping me out of Salina, and back in for just a minute. Thankyou, Watsky. You've done alot for me.
It's refreshing to see nothing but positivity and relation here, as well as encouragement. I'm so glad everyone here is as supportive and together as a fan for him as I feel. He truly deserves even more recognition.
I'm studying abroad at the moment, an ocean away from where my book is currently sitting in my mailbox back in the States. This excerpt just held me over until I get home. 2 more weeks until my date with HTRE. Watsky, much love and respect.
I love the fact that whenever i come back here and watch this video its like im watching it for the first time and get in that somber mood feeling de-stressed or filled with light creativity
As a midwestern kid pursuing a useless degree in Art History, this is just about the most relatable thing from Watsky that I've ever seen. I can't wait to read the rest of the book. Thank you so much for putting so much work into this, it's so beautiful & so well put together.
Thank you. Your book changed the way I viewed the world and life. It truly has been the brightest thing to come of this dark year. Thank you... so much. ❤❤❤
Wow! Here in Des Moines, Iowa I absolutely LOVED this! But I disagree with one thing- Casey's pizza doesn't suck... it's great!!!! College events can blow (especially small private arts ones like Simpson College CAB events). But keep your head up and think back to Kirksville, Missouri. Hope to attend one of your events when you're back here in Iowa.
the biggest knock i've gotten from midwesterners on this has been about casey's pizza, haha. just please know i meant 'shitty' pizza in the most loving way possible
+WATSKY! Watson I have loved all of your songs in every way possible I listen to them for inspiration and I hope you will continue to make more and more.
I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart, for the courage you've kept while sharing your truth; it can't have been easy. Please know you have a forever fan of the Great George Watsky, and please for the love of God-come to Dallas!!!!!
There's something about this video, the energy it holds for me feels so familiar and I have no clue why. Glad I aint the only one who keeps coming back to this vid though.
I've been a fan for a few years, and this honestly blows away almost everything else you've written. It's beautiful, full of imagery, and entertaining, and I can honestly say that this has sold me on buying your book. Thanks George, and keep up the good work.
This is absolutely amazing George, I'm holding back tears because I'm so happy for everything you've accomplished. I can't wait until I get you to see you perform again.
I'm living in Alaska right now but I'm originally from Kansas and lately haven't given my hometown much thought until I watched this. Thank you for reminding me where I come from and while people always say it's better to pass through Kansas than stay, I disagree. It's homey, and comfortable and has amazing memories, especially when I saw you in Lawrence in 2013. I can't wait to read your book.
Oh man. This captures the emptiness and the disconnect of the Midwest so well. Places where you get excited if someone even mentions the name of your state because you feel so insignificant; it's a miracle anyone knows your home exists at all. God, I can't wait until my copy of the book comes through the mail.
You need a movie man, I'd watch the shit out of it. I love to see how far you've come and it's awesome how much your music and poetry has helped me through hard times.
George I've been following your career since you put out your version of " The Difference Is The Differences". I can honestly say that you've been consistently putting out content that consistently improves, while it gets more meta and thought provoking. thank you for not giving up on your dreams so we can enjoy your passion.
I come back to this video every so often. There's an undeniably human feeling to it. I know that the content isn't really meant to be "reassuring" but despite that I still finish watching with a sense of reassurance. That life will happen and we just kinda have to weave our way around the particularly nasty bits.
Watsky needs a movie. His stories are the most interesting stories I've ever heard in my life. A movie on Watskys life would be fucking amazing. Watsky is you're reading this, please make it happen
As a college student in a tiny-ass midwestern town a good 3-4 hours away from any major city, this is one of the realest things you've ever captured. Much kudos.
This whole book need to be turned into a DVD/BluRay. I was invested, and waiting to see what happened next, and then it ended. Books are nice, but you bring the emotion to life.
My long time girlfriend bought me your book for Christmas last year, and we saw you and Adam Vida in a little bar here in Montana on the x infinity tour. You've had a major positive effect on my life, and I just want to thank you for existing.
Watsky. You are my inspiration. Ever since I was little. I've always wanted to go to your shows. Meet you. Talk to you. Everyone used to think I was amazing just because I could do your fast rap. But your amazing. Thankyou for being you.
Can't wait to pick this book up. This video and the one explaining your absence has pretty much sold me on this. Keep up the good work and please continue to branch out! Unfortunately, I'm going to miss your appearance in Boston, but I'm glad to see you're still around and working.
I love this and ill be getting this book. I wrote to watsky twice and he wrote back twice. He came to Manchester 3 times, I saw him twice because I didn't go the first time without ,y brother who introduced me to him. This book is his soul and I love it. Well done, my friend.
I know I'm posting into oblivion, but I've been living abroad for a while now and finding this video gave me a sense of home that I haven't found in months. ooof dude nice
It really hits hard when he's talking about your hometown. Salina, KS. Even Manhattan, which is where I live now. Man, this really hit me hard when he's talking about your home town and where you live
Watsky is probably the person I respect most in life of people that I have never met. Il buy your book as soon as i have money man. You got a good soul.
The amount of time and effort that seems to have gone into this is truly amazing. Guys, not only did he write a book that will undoubtedly be amazing, but he put together a ten minute movie just to promote it and let the people who won't be able to afford the book a glimpse into it.
I just bought the book, and 5 more for friends. Thank you for branching out. I also wanted to say, that I really enjoyed this video. I realize that it is totally infeasible to make many hours of these, but if you did, I'd watch them. Barring that, I'd even consider listening to an audiobook. I've never seen the point in having someone read a book to me, but the emphasis you can use to color your own words adds so much more to them.
Hey Watsky. Just a fan from Wichita, Kansas. I saw you in warped a while back and have been hooked on your music and way with words ever sense. Keep doing what you do, and us in the field of a state will keep listening.
Loving the book so far! My pre-order copy arrived today and I've been whizzing through it. Perfect balance of simple stories with enough thought put behind them.
after two years of work, my book is finally out. i went to the midwest with some friends to film this adaptation of one of the essays. thanks for your support over the years guys and always allowing me to try new things
You are the greatest, I'm so happy I discovered you all those years ago. You're a true artist that never seizes to amaze me.
This was so intriguing. You did a fantastic job and that visuals were well done. I don't remember the last time I bought a book, but I will definitely be buying yours. Congratulations on the release.
Ily watsky been with you since 2012
This is the best thing ive watched in a very long time :D
PLEASE MAKE A MOVIE
Actually sad that this is over
+Sorable RIGHT, I NEED MORE
Why is it over?
His x-infinity feature length is happening soon just stay loyal
It would be a better Indy movie than "Sorry to bother you." It has a similar feel.
Is this the first music video for a book ever?
yup
27tl YEA BUT IS THIS A FUCKING BOOK TRAILER? NO ITS AN EXCERPT OK SO FUCK OFF GET OUTTA HERE YOUR OPINION IS USELESS.
Wow, this dude went from 0-100 real quick.
27tl Comparing the book to an album and this excerpt to a song, it's set up like how a music video would be. Stephen King hasn't taken a chapter out of his book and adapted it, so it's just an interesting concept. I don't mean a literal music video, just using that as a reference.
27tl Lol you all sensitive, simmer down sweetie
I was one of those kids sitting on a couch in Grand Forks! Still have your CD some 6 or 7 years later. So glad you finally got recognition for your work!
so crazy man! great to here (hear-edit haha) from you. not often i get the follow up on an experience so far from home, so long ago. much love!
Watsky... Hear*, you are the best rapper that I know
+WATSKY! u inspired me to go to collage and make rap songs
fuck yes. power to you man. :D
Might want to take an English class.
See, THIS is how you make a video. The visuals don't mirror the words precisely (that's just cheesy) but they complement and enrich the meaning of the words. Beautifully shot, lots of attention to detail (especially period-based details), and chock full of meaning. Seriously great job!
PS I can hardly wait to read the book! I've had it pre-ordered for months!
You (and I) are commenting on a comment.
yea..it's soo beautiful
theoriginaledi Completely agree. Do you know of any other videos of this similar style? I've been looking around RUclips for things like these but I can't find it.
I'm a comedian who just got into doing traveling college shows, I have never seen a video more relatable. Watsky, thanks for being such a genuine artist.
*Watsky
where are you preforming at? if you're anywhere near id come out to see you preform!
Probably been to some of the same colleges where it was filmed maybe? I recognize that college where he gets out of his car as Morningside College in Sioux City, IA. And he knows his small Iowa cities; Sioux City is called Sewer City for a reason.
I actually did a show at the ChesterField bar in Sioux City about a month ago, yeah the city really does smell.
Hey Watsky I loved your narration! I would 100% without a doubt buy an audio version of your book with you as the narrator.
good news, I narrated the audiobook :) it's available through the Penguin site
I bought the dead tree version, and I typically despise audiobooks, but I love the way you speak your thoughts and this tempts me to get a copy of the audiobook as well. Thanks for confirming that you narrated it yourself!
Sweet magical fuck!
Im getting it!
Thanks so much brother.
+WATSKY! Yup good to have you back!
+WATSKY! Yup good to have you back!

Ari Rabinowitz lol jackseptickeye gets like 1m views per vid but his subs r like 10mil (I think)
Ari Rabinowitz Sorry mate, but yea these subs are real. Been around since 2012.
Theres a whole book.
Please, Watsky! A movie, a short-film, a Netflix original series! It could be so, and I would watch it!
Make a movie adaption of this! I'd pay to see it.
seriously though!
There's a really similar premise in a youtube movie video called "Fort Wayne" by Heath Mcnease if your itching for more of this kind of stuff
Omg it's been ages since I even listened to Watsky and I find this video 10 mins after upload
Does he feel like old school to you aswell ?
+Mc x0nit yes tbh lol
THE MAGIC OF MARKETING
This needs to be a movie, I mean a book is a great idea for someone with your writing ability. But this is awesome.
I've been to almost all of these places. This hit close to home and is AMAZING.
Bruh, how has no one noticed you here yet? XD Love your animations
Cheap elmers glue for people who can't figure out another way to bond...... damn
And earlier he said he'd talked with the people about "that awful rainstorm that just passed" or "that awful snowstorm on the way"
Listening to this I was just thinking "I REALLY hope this has an audio book version" seeing that it does, I will be purchasing this as soon as I get paid.
legit what im doing
Please make a movie based on the entire book like this. I'd more than happily pay to watch that.
are you gonna make an audio book read by you of this? I'd listen the fuck out of that. If not book it is!
Yes, there is an audio book, the link to it is in the description (Edit: it is read by Watsky)
+Bitches and Fish Sticks But is it read by watsky?
Yes
yeah, I can no longer sit and read something, but I listen pretty damn well lol.
It is awesome, i'm waiting for the movie
It's really strange for me to relate to a video about touring the US because the usual fodder for such anecdotes is coastal or Texas way, but to have places here in the Midwest spoken about not with ire but with actual interest and insight really piqued my curiosity in your book, George. +Andrew Stevens I love your profile picture!
My family is from Salina. This video brought back a lot of nostalgia for me.
I could listen to you talk forever
This was actually a good short. I hope you make another one.
I know this video is kinda old, but I recently read a comment that said you made this video out of pocket, that is amazing. An artist has such a passion for what he does that he creates in another form. I have to say this video is truly inspiring and is probably the most well made video I have ever seen!!

when i come back to this video every year or so, i always get a little. sniffly. hearing about the travel routine, the identical rural towns, the empty community college campus centers.. its really real, really genuine. i think i could go for an audiobook right about now
I thought I was the only one that comes back once a year to this lol reminds me of a time in my life I wish I could go back to
this could be a 60 minute feature. loved it
I love how he totally embodied the awkwardness. I was cringing at the silence and I loved it. Such a down to Earth guy that everyone can relate to. Love you GW!
I watched this late at night and probably 5 minutes after i was done watching I fell asleep. i had a dream about the boy who fell down and suffocated in wheat. it was about what he did before that. good dream.
love this watskys voice just makes this so much more warm
I would both buy the audio book of this if it was made and I would watch every second of a tv show you made (if you ever decide to go for that)
Only reason I don't want him making a tv show is for the reason Mac lethal did the same thing, stopped making music, and slowly started to fail
there is an audiobook version that he narrated himself
MrScottyTay YAAAAAS
And the "sample" you can listen to for free, has me hooked. Buying this ASAP.
He does have a series on youtube called Watsky's making an album, and It's fucking fantastic
If you made your whole book into a longer film of this quality or a series, I would watch it (and buy it) in a heartbeat. Love your work; it always resonates. Will definitely be buying the book and audiobook as soon as I can!
this was so well edited fuck, I'm all inspired and shit
That fucking production quality tho... god damn.
Every single word that comes out of your mouth, a song or not, sounds poetic and is incredibly relaxing. Thank you for being an amazing artist, Watsky.
Should of made a MOVIE then a BOOK
i'd love to, waiting for someone to give me a million dollars to do it :)
gofundme, patreon or any of the others!
I am willing to give you a small loan of a million dollars
clannad😍
+tokega #triggered
I absolutely love this.
Honestly would watch an entire series in a heartbeat. Beautifully written and performed.
This is fucking beautiful. You need to have a kickstarter to do the whole thing.
My brother got me this book for my birthday and it's honestly the most thoughtful gift I've ever received.
Beautifully done, I respect the shit out of everything you do Watsky.
I'm studying abroad at the moment, an ocean away from where my book is currently sitting in my mailbox back in the States. This excerpt just held me over until I get home. 2 more weeks until my date with HTRE. Watsky, much love and respect.
The "am i gunna see you again?" part felt like a shot in the gut.
I'm from a small town named Holton Kansa not far from Salina. This touched my heart so much. Thank you Watsky.
hey, youtubers, take note, this is how you promote a book.
I love the fact that whenever i come back here and watch this video its like im watching it for the first time and get in that somber mood feeling de-stressed or filled with light creativity
Make this a small series??
It's from the audio version of his book. You can buy it for $16 on the website linked in the description. It is narrated by him as well
Literally all I could have hoped for
Even a feature length film... This is really high quality material....
As a midwestern kid pursuing a useless degree in Art History, this is just about the most relatable thing from Watsky that I've ever seen. I can't wait to read the rest of the book. Thank you so much for putting so much work into this, it's so beautiful & so well put together.
Is it too much to ask for more of these?
YEEESSSS PLEEAASSEEE, that caught me up REALLY bad. Nice job.
I will give you this, it is greasy... but its so good!
+WATSKY! Watson I have loved all of your songs in every way possible I listen to them for inspiration and I hope you will continue to make more and more.
I work at a casey's. and for a pizza that comes out of a gas station.....it's the best you will find.
That's so funny, I though the exact same thing.
Only two words for this:High Quality. PLEASE make more!
Well, this could be a film. The whole book, I mean. Could be made in this style of short films and man, I'd watch the shit out of it.
i would love a movie like this.
welp, lemme just go buy a book for the first time in 5 years..
was thinking the same thing lol.
lmao ikr
(looks at full bookshelf) i really hope you read more than once every 5yrs.
if not, at least you're only 2 more years from a new book
Honestly, I would love to just chill, smoke and pick your brain. You are an inspiration.
Damn, Watsky. This is impressive
why?
+espark1089 He's calling the video impressive because it's well made you ingrate
+Charles Oh it was a good production. Doesn't mean I have to enjoy the content
+Charles Oh there is a lot of time and effort put into musicals but they all suck too. I just wish he'd drop the artsy shit and stick to fun music.
espark1089 I never said that you had to enjoy the content, I just said it was well made
I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart, for the courage you've kept while sharing your truth; it can't have been easy. Please know you have a forever fan of the Great George Watsky, and please for the love of God-come to Dallas!!!!!
make this into a series ❤
Always come back to watch this. such a good vid
There's something about this video, the energy it holds for me feels so familiar and I have no clue why. Glad I aint the only one who keeps coming back to this vid though.
Holy shit, this made me so much more emotional then when I read it.
I've been a fan for a few years, and this honestly blows away almost everything else you've written. It's beautiful, full of imagery, and entertaining, and I can honestly say that this has sold me on buying your book. Thanks George, and keep up the good work.
I really like this, more please, make MORE videos like this, it was entertaining, funny & just plain interesting...
This is absolutely amazing George, I'm holding back tears because I'm so happy for everything you've accomplished. I can't wait until I get you to see you perform again.
I would buy the hell out of this audiobook if Watsky read the whole thing
He does read it in audio book form.
wait really? the audiobook is all watsky?
+CGagnon5 yup
Samuel Krogh Larsen shit thanks for the heads up. Just bought it.

This was awesome! Nice work : )
I haven't followed much of your work and don't read much but i think this video just sold me
same actually
The book is easily addicting.
You need a movie man, I'd watch the shit out of it. I love to see how far you've come and it's awesome how much your music and poetry has helped me through hard times.
Why is this not a movie?
Seriously. If this were a feature length movie I'd watch the entire thing right now
George I've been following your career since you put out your version of " The Difference Is The Differences". I can honestly say that you've been consistently putting out content that consistently improves, while it gets more meta and thought provoking. thank you for not giving up on your dreams so we can enjoy your passion.
My fucking god, do this a movie and I'll watch it 100 times, do this with the whole book and i'll watch it 100 more!
I come back to this video every so often. There's an undeniably human feeling to it. Red Scarlet-W with some pickups on a C300 mark II.
This whole book need to be turned into a DVD/BluRay. I was invested, and waiting to see what happened next, and then it ended. Books are nice, but you bring the emotion to life.
I don't know what this is, but i kinda like it.
+Cookies part of his new book
It is a visual representation of an excerpt from his new book.
My long time girlfriend bought me your book for Christmas last year, and we saw you and Adam Vida in a little bar here in Montana on the x infinity tour. You've had a major positive effect on my life, and I just want to thank you for existing.
Yup. I'd pay a premium for a movie of this.
Watsky. You are my inspiration. Ever since I was little. I've always wanted to go to your shows. Meet you. Talk to you. Everyone used to think I was amazing just because I could do your fast rap. But your amazing. Thankyou for being you.
Im very confused because I live in Cedar Falls, Wisconsin and we have a population of like -2.
I have never seen interpretation of written word so amazingly interpreted. This is amazing.
It does not look fun. I thought it be awesome to do what u did.
+Dilwyn Exposed That last sentence blew my mind.
Can't wait to pick this book up. This video and the one explaining your absence has pretty much sold me on this. Keep up the good work and please continue to branch out! Unfortunately, I'm going to miss your appearance in Boston, but I'm glad to see you're still around and working.
I LOVE UR SONGS!!! LIKE IDGAF, AND ASSHOLE, AND MORAL OF THE STORY, AND WHOA WHOA WHOA, AND NINJAS IS PARIS. UR SONGS R AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You got a good soul.
this is so perfect. please make a movie or make a show. i love everything you put out. cant wait to read the book. proud of you buddy!
8 years later and here I am again. Godspeed, G Watsky :’)
