San Jose Police Union Leader Arrested for Smuggling Fentanyl

- San Jose Police Officers’ Association (SJPOA) executive director Joanne Marian Segovia was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly smuggling fentanyl into the United States. Segovia, 64, was charged with one count of attempted importation of a controlled substance, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California.
Federal prosecutors allege that Segovia used her personal and office computers to order thousands of opioid and other pills to her home and agreed to distribute the drugs elsewhere in the United States. The investigation into Segovia was launched in 2020 after Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) received a tip that she was involved in the importation of illegal drugs. HSI agents then began tracking Segovia’s mail and intercepted several packages that contained fentanyl, according to the criminal complaint.
Segovia is scheduled to appear in federal court on Wednesday. If convicted, she faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine.

Edit: on a genuine note, in the past few years, many states have taken tangible action to limit the power of police unions. These policies were the result of popular outcry. So, not only is "Truthpiller" being a dick, he's also just plainly wrong about the efficacy of challenging police unions.

I live in San Jose California and we’re not only going through this with the police union but also there was a Parks and Recreation employee who was just caught up in a sex scandal that I believe lasted for a couple years so the city of San Jose is going through hell right now. Doesn’t surprise me because my family has history with the San Jose police department that stretches all the way back since 1973 in which they murdered my grandfather in cold blood. The state of California stepped in and paid my grandmother to remain silent but nobody went to prison which is insane.

I'm from San Jose also. I'm sorry as well. This is so embarrassing. The absolute nerve of our department. Makes me wonder if this is why the last police chief left so quickly, suddenly, and kind of quietly? They had to have been aware this was going on. Or investigating for quite a while. It's disgusting.
@@marisela7825 thank you also. I believe Anthony Matta is currently doing the best job he can given the the circumstances that he walked into it on. It’s gonna take about a decade because as you know we got multiple problems with this department before we see any really good changes. The current command needs to institute a zero policy and standby when it comes to these guys showing up drunk on the job though because all it takes is one idiot to lose his temper while under the influence of alcohol and we’re going to have another tragedy. I’m gonna try to make it to one of these police accountability meetings one day so that I can throw my two cents in the conversation and hopefully help turn the city around.

I'm certain she is on paid leave right now as it stands. Any other person with the same charges would be fired immediately if not jailed by now. It gives the feel of 2 separate levels of justice, people like her and everyone else. Just watching the news everyday and Congress blames cartels, immigrants, Hispanics and gang members. It would appear as if they wanted to clean house. However, if we don't also see justice or those officers held accountable for their actions, it becomes pointless.

Worcester PD (under investigation by the feds for their behavior on prostitution sting ops) had a couple officers that drank, smoke, and snorted so much coke that they passed out and were found unconscious when the police themselves were called to the house. The idea that the hubris, the overreach, and the flagrant law-breaking that cops display publicly represents the extent of what they do wrong is insanely naive; you know they're doing tons of awful shit behind closed doors that the public NEVER finds out about because, like we see with the stuff that DOES become public, cops are left to hold themselves accountable with basically no oversight and routinely find themselves not guilty. One of those Worcester cops got fired, but not after the two of them alone cost the city 100k in administrative leave, getting fat paychecks for upwards of a year to sit on their asses (which is probably what they were doing anyway, let's be real). That one was on his "last chance" with the department already--the other one is NOW on his last chance. Responders had to use CPR and give them Narcan!!! The neighbor that called 911 said they partied that loud every weekend!!! The dude that got fired says he's a vet that needs help, and wanted to appeal the decision to fire him. Get help then, man, why the hell would you be trying to claw your way back onto the force???

Lucky for me the Fentanyl mixing didn't happen regularly for about a year after I got sober. 99% of these addicts didn't choose for this poison Fentanyl to be mixed into their dope. It's heart breaking.

I’ve been sober 5+ years, but prior to that I had been an intravenous “enthusiast” of heroin and cocaine. Around 2015 in the northeast US, it started becoming nearly impossible to source legit H, and nearly everything available on a street level was being supplanted by fentanyl, and the upper supply sources became very nebulous (prior to that, dealers that I was in good with would be willing to disclose that their supplies were either from Mexico, or “the Middle East” [see: Afghanistan] by way of major ports [ie. Europe thru NYC/Philly])… suddenly this supply was disrupted and provenance became opaque.
Long story short, I have a LOT of questions about this…!

Sometimes it's easier to get away with something right in front of you than being sneaky about it. Why would they suspect her because who's going to question some ladies packages, especially the head of the department. The only way she would get busted is if her packages were intercepted in customs.
And even there the lack of interception seems odd. You'd think they've have a few sniffer dogs - because from the sound of it, she wasn't just ordering the odd package of drugs, she sounds as if she were importing drugs in the sorts of quantities you would if they were legal and you had a shop.

I think it’s entirely possible she was doing this on her own and just working with whoever she was forwarding/selling the shipments to. It’s that easy to order a few hundred pills online, get it shipped discreetly, then pass it on to a nephew or family member to unload to users.
Also, by having it shipped to a public place, the shipments could “be accepted” by a different individual other than herself then she can claim she didn’t accept.
