You are such a star, Gary. Your generosity towards the Mac community is so much appreciated, taking liberty to type on behalf of your many other 'disciples', be it here in Australia and all over the world.
That’s a brilliant demonstration of the features and possibilities. As a long-time MS Word user, I’m still learning Pages as I’ve made it my go-to word processor. I’m going to have fun experimenting with your ideas.
Excellent video; many thanks. I don't know where my head has been but I've wanted to use this feature for ages...and there it is, staring me right in the face.
Thanks Gary for bringing this up. This is exactly what I wanted to do. Instead I had to create separate box because i didn’t know this feature (more straightforward) exist.
Thanks for this. I hadn’t thought of using the paragraph formatting options. Had always used text boxes to make text stand out, but they can be finicky. I’ll try these ideas in my next document.
This is really cool Gary. Cant thank you enough for making me understand Mac. As I transitioned to Mac over a year I started liking pages and keynote a lot to create a really impressive documents. One area I am really struggling on pages is the ruler and formatting section like adjusting tabs with rulers….have you covered that topic already? If not can please insert it in your queue of request. I have really loved the pages without document body and I don’t even know if it is a feature in MS Word.
Just an idea, Gary, but on the example with the grey background & the black top border, you could put in a bottom border, same point below text as with top border, then make the bottom line white so it’s there but invisible on the page colour. That would make the grey background fall below the text. I think🤔. I’ve not used this new feature yet.
cool channel, cool tutorial. there should be more stuff like this on youtube, most apple users have no idea how to use apple software even though they own the products :))
Hey thanks Gary, I'm having trouble with a grey background in the paragraph background - not allowing space after the paragraph. The box finishes uncomfortably close to the base of the paragraph. Adding space below doesn't extend box, only adds white space below. Great vid, thanks!
This little-known feature of Pages’ styles makes my creation of technical manuals possible in a fraction of the time. Many of those features lack the interface elegance to be as usable as they should be. This is a good move in the right direction. Your users might be more comfortable dragging the margin arrows to create custom paragraph appearance. It’s ‘live’ and much, much faster. Again the cursor only needs to be anywhere in the paragraph.
You should encourage Apple to change Numbers to use the same border process that Pages uses. Borders in Numbers defaults to four lines (a box), which one has to deselect when inserting a single line above the cell to show a subtotal or total.
Thank you very much! I love using the paragraphs styles, but I have two questions: • is there a shortcut to eliminate all the existing styles in a document, to only work with the ones I create for that specific document? • is there a way to include the "bullets and lists" formatting in a specific style? It seems like these are two completely different fonctions. And thanks again, Gary, your videos are very useful!
Print on both sides of a piece of paper? That would need to be a feature of your printer, and then you'd need to look at your printer documentation to learn how. Change the style of what, exactly?
I fully switched from Word after 30 years to Pages when I got an M1 Mini - but one persistent problem stops me from loving it: Paragraph styles seemingly MUST have all attributes On or Off - meaning for example, I can't have a style that does not specify Italicized or straight text. So when I import text from elsewhere and then apply my formatting... I LOSE ALL my italics! (and I admittedly use a lot of them) Anyone know if I'm doing something wrong here (apart from overusing italics) or is this a bug in Pages? In Word, my styles could have many attributes like italics have no setting, and so I did not have this problem.
Not sure what you mean. If I italicize some words in a paragraph that is "Body" style, then change that paragraph to "Caption" style, those words are still italics. I can change back to "Body" and they still are too.
I think I understand what Paul is hoping to do: when importing a formated text using « copy and apply style », it would be nice if we could oversee some specific caracteristics of the original text, so these would not be changed as the new style is applied. Great idea!
Thanks for your reply. I apparently can’t have a style that does not have a Yes or No attribute for italics (or any other aspect). If I write in one Pages document with older style, and copy text with some italics into another doc with a different body style, I can’t just apply the new style or I will lose the italics. And I just now tried typing plain text in the default body style, italicizing half of it, then applying my preferred text style, all in the same doc - and I lost the italics. I also write a lot in Filemaker believe it or not - and of course I italicize there - and lose the formatting as soon as I paste it in Pages, Ideally, my preferred style would not set italics one way or the other. But I can’t see how to make a style that does not have the attributes set either On or Off.
Too many variations to track mentally from demo to example to creating say, 3 page doc from start to finish of several style variations iin each doc product.🤔?

As always, simple yet extremely informative. This is why Gary is only 1 of 2 people I support on Patreon.

Terrific video, Gary! Some really useful suggestions and examples.
Thanks very much, Gary, for this extremely informative video! This will really help towards making professional looking documents with Pages.
wow , i have been struggling to do this and you made it look very simple
Thanks Gary!
A very useful and informative video tutorial today! Thank you, Gary! 👏🏻❤️
Brilliant. Thanks for the insights!

In the Text sidebar, choose Style and then look for Spacing. Then set the "After" amount to more to extend the bottom of the paragraph background.
At 7:30 if you add a bottom border but make it the same color as the page background the effect you wanted should work.
Thanks bunches

No. And no, they are completely separate things.
Oh… That’s too bad!
How do I print on both sides …also, can I change the style from created document?

@@PaulRWorthington Not sure why it is behaving that way for you. It doesn't for me.
how to add porders to the whole document?
Do you mean like a box around the edge of the page? Just add a box shape with the border you want and move it behind everything.
@@macmost like microsoft offers border for the whole page
@@sarthakverma9024 Try what I just suggested.

I will leave Word for Pages.
