  • This video is for students to practice defining and categorising behaviours to build up an ethogram for use in a hypothetical research project.

The video shows the penguins at Edinburgh zoo. There are King penguins, rock hopper penguins and gentoo penguins. For this exercise we are interested in the gentoo penguins. The film is not intended to give as an exhaustive list of behaviours for gentoo penguins, but should give students practice in defining and categorising behaviours and building ethograms for use in behavioural research. There may be some behaviours that are difficult to define or categorise!
An ethogram is a list of definitions of an animal's behaviours. Definitions should be clear, detailed and distinguishable from each other. Sometimes the definitions are put into categories. We usually want the categories of behaviour to be objective, so they should be descriptive, rather than implying knowledge of what the behaviour is for. They should also be discrete, and not overlap with each other.
Ethograms can be as specific or general depending on the study. A research project dealing only with courtship behaviour in gentoo penguins can be composed simply of the various courtship behaviours seen in this species. Alternatively, some studies seek to describe all aspects of an animal's behaviour, an ethogram for such a study would comprehensively describe and categorize all behaviours for the species.
