The Chieftain Takes The Model Workshop Quarantine Challenge

- So there's this chain challenge going around where modellers are showing off their work areas and their stash. I don't have much of a work area, but I do have a stash.
The challenger:
Small Soldier: / @smallsoldier
Follow-ons:
Clifton Smith: / cliff1979b
Steve Zaloga... It worked! He took it up! • Zaloga's Hobby Room
Jim Starkweather/KitMaker Network: / kitmaker
Moran: "What am I going to do with all these Vampires?"
Build a squadron, obviously.
Find more garlic....
Chieftain be like, I got this gifted by a vieuwer, this will be higher on the list
Also Chieftain: I was gifted this by my daughter, I may donate it to a charity
Priorities. 😁
My daughter's gift would be number 1 priority to be honest, must because she thought of me
I like how chieftain can be doing literally anything and it would still be entertaining and educational.

Excellent! I am so happy to see you participating in the Quarantine Challenge! I'll add your video to the playlist.
And there is - like you said - no shame in having a basic setup. In fact that's probably best that way, since it shows how easy this hobby is to do. Most people are casual builders and they prefer it that way...90% of all the crazy tools just sit around and never get used anyways :) waste of money in many peoples' points of view.
Our lord has come to the comments
Also, holy crap, excellent ideas for channels to pass on the challenge onto! I do hope that Adam Savage will participate....that would be amazing. This challenge is really spooling up!

Greetings from Galway!
I love the field ingenuity of your setup! Really like your new modelling videos, you and Mr. Zaloga are responsible for my love of Shermans that have been taking over my stash!
I hope we see Zaloga participate!
That's so weird, i used to have a friend named Shane from there.
Yeah, that would be something. He'd blow up like Martins channel.
Actually the same for me too, I gained a healthy understanding and respect for the Sherman because of these two! Doesn't hurt that I like the shape of the later models, either.
Holy crap. I thought my stash of half built, unfinished, just started, and I'll do it later kits was gigantic. Also, I've never run across anybody else with a Combrig kit in his stash. My wife calls my Combrig kits my mistresses. Hats off to you, sir, for your admirable and eclectic collection of kits.
Oh, you have no *idea* how big some peoples' stash can get; I've seen pictures of stashes that would fill that closet completely. This one, for example: i.imgur.com/PeXPy3D.jpg
The sight of the tank transporter made me think, when the world starts turning again, why not expand the videos to look at them as well? I used to have a Sgt who was ex RCT and regailed us with stories about driving and working on them. Heavy recovery vehicles might also be an idea.
Keep up the good work. I'd rather spend half an hour watching you clear out your press than clearing out my own!
Love this! Exactly how I started out with kids! If the carpet doesn't eat it, the kids will come morning!
Just a thought. Years ago I came up with a compromise for much of my airbrushing. I'm a second generation sign-painter. I picked up a tank at an auto-parts store intended for refilling tires and about the size of a five gallon bucket on it's side. It was rated for 120 psi. I fitted it with a $25 regulator and was able to airbrush for hours with almost no noise. I'd take it out to the garage and hook it up to the compressor for ten minutes, charge it up to around 90 psi or so then take the little tank inside with me and paint all night while the loudest thing in the room was the TV my wife was watching. Now, that was only for latex... water based paints, but the bulk of how I do coloring on models. I usually do an enamel primer and clear-coat finishes (matte or gloss, depending) but that's outside because of the fumes.
dude you use a Cheeta bead blaster or were you actually able to buy the separate air tank from an air compressor? thats sweet.
I love the battered old wooden table for finishing work. Dents and burns add character if you ever decide to strip and refinish
Wow, like going over to a friends house when I was twelve and checking out all his models ... I watched, and enjoyed the whole thing. Thanks for a bit of fun. Put the AER Lingus decals on the Type 97! What the heck. ;)
LMFAO! 😂 🤣 😅
The Chieftan is a diehard professional modeler. No doubt about it
"Out of reach of a 3-yr old." Anyone wanna make odds for or against? BEG!
Out of the reach of a 3 yr old......... famous last words
My 3 year old got hold of scissors and cut up my mouse and other cables. That was 15 years ago.
Nope... mine climbed the pantry years ago. He may know tanks but no concept of the destructive power of a toddler!
Thank you for showing us your stash Chieftain. :) I appreciate it very much.
Love your paint filing system 🙃😉🤣...thanks, as it made my day. I am a father too of a now grown daughter but I remember those days very well. Really have been enjoying your full array of video series. Thanks for all of your efforts.
When I was a kid I made a Hurricane in Irish Air Corps colours. I've no clue where the decals came from, though my uncle who liked building kits himself was also in the Air Corps and I think that's where I got them from.
Priceless! I love it. Always entertaining!
Yeah, it was fun to see a different take on a workspace that's not so much a permanent thing.
Looks like organised chaos of a family man to me....🙏🏻😆❤️🇦🇺
Hello from Russia. Didn't expect that our Quarantine Challenge go this far.
By the way, you shown screenshot from my video. I also have two small kids (1 year and 4 years) and isolated area is the only solution to calmly engage in modeling and don't thinking that kids will eat or take some details/paints from table. And yes, it my small modeling paradise )))
Thanks for sharing your stash, it was interesting.
I found it hilarious when he starts talking about the equipment, just like in the Hatch videos. his voice went from completely casual just kinda bullshitting with us like any good old friend, and then switches to a different Inside The Chieftains Closet voice.
Fantastic Nic. What an interesting stash. Lots of esoteric kits in there mate! Loving this side of your hobby.
get a strong vibe of inside the chieftain's hatch going on in this video and i freaking love it
Hi Chieftan Nick! Mate I don't feel so embarrassed now with all the unstarted models I have in my collection! It's a very interesting thing to see what models you have in your stash, & the little story around each one. I loved this video from start to finish. Thank you!
Very entertaining video my man ! I enjoyed your stash and the extra info you gave about some of the vehicles you have used !
Hey James, I see your a Chieftain fan as well. Nice!
Thanks for inviting us over to the house! The Irish subject might be better for your diorama plan, assuming you have more patience than I do with resin and vacuform.
Its a good thing that the recovery vehicle looks recoverable.
I loved playing Harpoon!
Scotty you are going to blow up now ..... cannot think of anyone who deserves it more 👍
Eclectic or what. You sure like a wee bit of different. Some brands I've never heard of. Can't wait to see some completed. Thanks for sharing.
Good morning Chieftan, I enjoyed your tour, it makes me feel lucky to have a desk and shelves set up in our spare bedroom, my stash is in two wardrobes, please keep safe and well , best regards to you and your family, giddaye from Australia.
Now this is a man that literally doesn’t care
These videos are extremely cozy. During quarantine I like to listen to them while looking at the birds coming to my bird feeder
That's a zen moment! 😀
Appreciate the recognition. I will go ahead and shoot a video for channel about my work area and stash! Thanks to @Aries Styrene for the heads up on your nomination. I enjoyed seeing your stash and seeing your work area. Stay safe!
😎👍🏾
Steve Zaloga RUclips channel? Holy shit, yes please!
I enjoyed this and hope you all the best. I like your Armor selection, and have build several of those myself. Can't wait for the next vehicle and to see if Steve actually does the modeling challenge.
I mean, it's honestly great as always to watch your stuff. As for the Tamiya rattle cans, only downside is the sheer cost of the things. It's crazy how expensive they are when you compare it to airbrush primer. Also, the Panhard AML 60, Takom makes a model kit of it in plastic now. Always check scalemates. :D
Still have my 1/32 Tiger 1 model I bought at a hobby store in Germany nearly 20 years ago. It helped while away the hours when on CQ 24 hour duty-I even recreated the Zimmerit anti-magnetic coating with several layers of glue and an exacto knife applied at a ridiculously slow pace. My closet looks about the same lol. Nice pun with the "recoverable" M88A1
I remember the Airfix Fokker Friendship kit from the early 70's
Very nice Nicholas, no shame in having to keep the kids safe. I have a 2 year old and 4 month old, a very important baby gate keeps them out of the model room for now.
I think Steve is a great nomination, he knows more about kits and building than just about anyone. He builds incredibly fast as well.
How come no Sherman kits?
2:01 the carpet, sounds like my dad 😀.
@chris younts
Cutting holes in the carpet? LOL 😂 😅 🤣
The MK VI would be looking nice in the Malta camouflage scheme
Sir, as a South African, I can tell you ,as far as my knowledge and recollection goes, we never used the folding wing on the Buck. Wether the hardware was I stalled on the plane, I don't know.
Nice stash of model kits you have. That 1/72 Hasegawa A-4KU is really hard to find. Thank you for sharing Chieftain! Greetings from S. Texas.
The Jordan 191 is one of the most beautiful F1 cars and yes Schumacher did start his first F1 race at the 1991 Belgian GP at Spa in that car but the clutch failed on the first lap.
This is awesome Nick! This is why I wanted to see your space as we all have different challenges and a 2 year old will do it. I'm long past that and can have everything in my Studio space free and clear. I can totally respect the fact that you have to drag everything out every time you want to do some modelling... now that's dedication! You have some interesting things in the stash as well. Happy modelling sir and thanks for being part of our quarantine challenge. Cheers! BTW are you still in the army? American or Irish... maybe a silly question. :D
Still in, US.
The_Chieftain Nice! Armoured I presume?
@@SmallSoldier Nah. I'm a Major. Like most, I drive a desk, haven't been on steel in about a decade.
The_Chieftain Drive a desk... haha, never heard that one. So were you in the Irish army initially?

Reminds me of this rant from Dr. Cox in Scrubs:
"Gather round, doomed new interns who just paged me! Quick question: What does this outfit tell you? (…) It means that I was just working out -
which, incidentally, is the last remaining activity I have in my adult life that qualifies as 'me time'
Other activities recently crossed off of that list include my morning dump and all showers. You see, my dear son Jack has decided that those are team sports. However, I’m here, and I’m totally psyched to hear whatever the super-de-duper reason is that you paged me.”
Strongly recommend the 1/350 Big E. Great build, I've really enjoyed mine. Thinking about doing an Eagle next, then moving on to a 1/200 Rodney (29). Bit of a change of pace.
Takom makes a plastic 1/35 AML-60 and Echelon makes Irish decals for the AML.
You are a real modeler no doubt, with or without a workbench. Great fun watching this video!
As the father of a 13 month old... I completely understand.
@The_Chieftain. As a former British soldier I started making model warships, tanks, Spitfires, Hurricanes, Lancasters, Mosquitoes and Hunter's, etc, with my boy when he was about 4 years old. Letting him do base coats on large parts and telling him basic stuff about the history of the real things. Sure sometimes the results were not perfect, but he loved the models in his room. These days, about 20 years later, my son is serving in the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm. It might have been the HMS Victorious or Sea Fury or Sea Harrier models, or his mothers family being RN, I am not sure...
You build whenever you want buddy. Your stuff, do what makes you happy. I build mine in my bedroom
There is an injection molded Panhard AML60 available for a few years now, made by Takom. The kit is 2084.
When I was a kid, 60--70 years ago I made kits to give to relatives as presents. One I made was of the Mayflower, another of the USS Missouri Iowa class battleship.
Judging by the graphic design on the box, the Airfix Fokker Friendship is certainly before the early 1970s, when I started making kits.
My workspace is my office, I have 2 desks, a computer desk and a workdesk which all do multiple duties. All my paints and supplies are in 1 tote. I dont have any fancy organizers or anything. All the common small tools are in a pencil box. I use a Badger KR1 airbrush for super nice work, and got a $25 chinee double action gravity fed airbrush for everyday work. The $25 actually works really well with acrylics and goes down fine enough at 0.2mm for 1/72 armor camo patterns. I am feeling slack that I dont have all my model stuff organized and pretty. Thanks for the video !!
2;36 kits out of reach of a two year old. man chieftain is such an optimist :)
Optimist now and realist later on.
Great tour buddy, loved it. Just so you know Takom and Tiger models now do the aml. Suppose be great kits to. Thanks for taking part and gracing us mear peasents of modellers with your presence. Its very good of you and I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more model kits from you. I hope you, and your family are all well and staying safe and virus free. Stay safe matey
Nice stash sir! I’ve been making models for a few years now and have recently finished a model of an Alvis Saladin in 1:35 scale
@Oliver Viehland as it should be. You should have seen my Cape Canaveral playset......
For the closet in the study, the nice people at Closetmaid make a spiffy wire shelf (typically availablet to be custom-cut at the local home improvement store) which installs in a jiffy. This, I will advance, could well be placed above the existing shelf to use that vertical height to its best advantage.
Or not.
It is only my 2¢ as someone who has faced the dilemma of closets filled in by people who wanted to be home a half-hour before they started.
Toddlers will make you reconsider a lot of things in your life. I feel you.
Love it someone who is as unorganized as I am. I will sleep well tonight.
That table looks awfully familair, might be that I eat on such a table every day, and have done so for my entire life =)
The reminder to yourself is a good one. Recently did an inventory and came up with 50 kits of all types...I'll be set for a decade or two.
Oh and on the AML-60 note: Takom makes plastic versions of it now, so easier-to-build options are avaiable.
I have also found some indelible markers work really well for some applications.
I know I'm a couple of months late, but... if you want an easier Vampire T.11 , the recent Airfix kit is a pearl. Even mine looks good!
Also, LMAO at you 'looking forward' to building the Airfix Bucc - I have 5 of them, and not one fuselage part is straight, every single one has a compound twist and warp, most in opposite directions.
Wow, a T28....I want one of those!
Built a few of those models in the past. And a number of others. All dead and broken now, haven't built a model in many years.
Nice video showing off your modeling stuff. Very interesting to see what the regular normal people have. Normally you just see what the professionals and modelers with great setups would have. Like seperate room for the model making hobby etc. Very interesting to see, nice and thank you for sharing this with us.
Love your show!!! 👍😊
You have a spare closet, I am so jealous
The Airfix F-27 kit in Aer Lingus livery first came out in the early 1960's. I bought and built one as a young teenager, my painting of it wasn't very good, no air brush in those days.
I hope there is model railway content coming! This is great
Real life! I love it!!!
Glad to see some Swedish stuff in there aswell!
I am looking forward to another wall painting video :-)
Like your videos. Find them very mundane and mind numbing. Takes me away from my disabling back pain and helps me sleep
Must be fantastic to get all these "advice" and "opinions" on cutting mats and what not, lol..
Keep up the nice vids sir!
I didn't even know people used fancy cutting mats. Here I am with my simple plastic cutting board I stole from the kitchen.
They're pretty nice to work on, but more importantly: If you photograph anything on a cutting mat, the image instantly looks fancier and more professional.
Videos like these make me glad that I don't have a massive backlog of kits to make (I only have 7, if that counts as small). It also makes me feel amateur, since I only have a single plastic 'toolbox' to house all my paints, tools, and weathering kits. I'm not sure I could justify buying a full airbrush kit! I need to up my game, as I was just happy to assemble and paint my Valentine tank this quarantine, and I'm not even sure I even want to weather it, since I'm terrible at that.
Thanks for sharing, even if it was 'coerced'! I don't follow any modelling channels, so maybe you'll be the inspiration to finish my models beyond a 'fresh off the factory floor' coat of paint!
Great video and impressive stash I wish I had that many kits
Hi Nic, nice video! Few things that struck me watching it:
Vampire T.11: If you don't fancy struggling with that resin kit, Airfix do a 1/72nd injection one now that's supposed to be good.
AML armoured cars: Ace models do a few variants of these (AML-90, AML-60, Panhard M3, maybe others) in injection-moulded 1/72nd scale. Some boxings even have Irish decals! Got a few Ace kits but never built one yet: their reputation is umm mixed....
Fouga Magister. The Heller has the better plastic, but Airfix recently re-popped their ancient rivet-infested version (it builds quite nicely though) with an Irish decal option. It's pretty cheap, so you could get one just for the decals and save you Max Decals sheets. Me being me, I'll use mine for a What-If: Gnats? Hawks? L-39s? Who know which way a richer Ireland might have jumped... ;-)
Hi Chieftain, just to point out that the Airfix Aer Lingus Fokker Friendship, in that style of box / artwork (1960-68), is quite collectable, I see them sell between £50-£80 GBP at auction.
I vote to rather put the gift from your little one on top of the "to build list".
wildonemeister I agree
thank you for the tour, it really kept me inspired while building my academy 1/35 scale Sharkmouth USMC AH-1Z and if Clifton doesn\t know now he will in about 5 min when I DM him lol
Revell has a very nice F-18 Hornet model
The IFV Scimitar and Scorpion are nice really nice builds
The Chieftain has a bigger modelling "workshop" than me xD i have a little box full of all king of Vallejo paints not sorted. My PC table is my modelling table and i think the only good thing i have for modelling is my airbrush xD I use a Harder Steenbeck Ultra.
M88A1 is also still somewhere in my shelf, along with a VK1602 Leopard and an M4A3 Sherman and some more.....
That's the same airbrush I have.
Have to agree I like Tamiya rattle cans too 😊
Wives and mothers are the worse anniversaries of a modeler. "Oops o dearrrr, I am sooooo sorry!" You see how a stiletto destroyed a week's work. Remember my Catalina Flying-boat drying on a newspaper on the floor after making sure I wouldn't stain the kitchen table.
I hope you get ahold of Adam Savage as well...good luck!
G'day Nicholas, I suppose you might already know this but if you have access to a colour laser printer, one can buy blank, white decal sheets onto which you can print any colour reproductions of Irish DF vehicles, ships and aircraft markings. Like, any decals you desire.
I'm so glad to see another bloke who stuffs his model kit stash at the bottom of a wardrobe, sorry, closet.
That Airfix Fokker Friendship box that looks old and useless to you is a gold mine to those 'singular' people who, generally, don't build models but collect model kit boxes just for the artwork. I say, 'just', but honestly, some of the older model kit boxes had amazing illustrations, often from hand painted originals. I assure you that somewhere in the UK there are significant numbers of box collectors who would part with cash for that old Airfix box. Might raise some money for your favoured charities, or pay for more paints and modelling equipment.
You're right, compared to most 1/35 armoured vehicle kits, 1/48 aircraft kits are more basic. However, one is familiar with aircraft construction. I have no idea about how they go about putting tanks together.
Thanks again for the tip on aftermarket metal tank tracks; it will save me days of toil and a minor coronary. So, after buying my first ever tank kit, what did I do...? I purchased two more. You know what they say, 'Buy three of anything and you're a collector.'
I'm still doing research on my Aussie M1A1 variant of your beloved Abrams and I've collected your videos and many other videos of others making Mk 1 Abrams kits. A space has been cleared in my office and I'm now going to enter the wondrous, scary world of tank construction.
Cheers, mate. All the best to you and your brood. Stay safe and well. BH
