You actually don't need to take the lid off to replace the intake filters. You can pop off the filters by prying them off from the side with a screw driver. They are on there tight! Also, the screws on the lid are cheaply made and strip easily so be warned!
How often you change the filters depends on how well the the environment is ventilated, the proximity of the compressor to the spray surface, the type of material that you spray and how often you airbrush. A rough guide is to check it every few months. Newer models have an access hole for easier access to the filter. For older models, follow the guide as seen in the video.
