If you've missed the last few episodes, we decided to buy a cabin, move into it and get comfortable for the winter. It has been a LONG 4 years of self building our home and it's time we start living again. Now that it's been a few weeks, this cozy cabin is exactly what our souls needed!

How did we end up here?
It all began with a year of full-time travel, embracing the van life until the world shifted, and we had to adjust accordingly. With travel no longer an option but determined to stay productive, we transformed our compact mobile abode into a self-sufficient off-grid dwelling that fulfilled all our needs. Recognizing the uncertainty of the current tiny home, we quickly realized a permanent residence was the most sensible choice. Over the past three years, we have meticulously overseen every aspect of the project ourselves, planning the construction while simultaneously setting up the off-grid property to sustain our future food requirements. For the last two years we've lived in a Geodesic Dome, which has allowed us to be comfortable (expect for the winter months), while we realize our shipping container home dream. However, this will mark our 4th winter with stable electricity, running water, or a flushing toilet and time has come to come up with a new plan going forward. Join us every Sunday for a new video!

I cannot believe how much of a difference just a few pieces of furniture has made to this space…while not having to sit on the floor is nice, being able to share our new home with friends and family has been the best part. The next few weeks the cottage will be a revolving door of visitors so we better get to work on building a proper guest room for our loved ones! Also, can you see the vision we have in mind for the upstairs living room with a crackling fire place and looking out over the lake?? 😍

If the Basement has flooded in the past, you may want to pull off a baseboard and just check behind it for water damage. If the basement flooded previously and then was painted over you could have mold behind the walls and will not know until it gets really bad. A quick check behind the baseboard could save you time and money down the road if there is damage.

Guys, dealing with mold is serious business. #1- you need to wear a respirator and gloves. When you moved the flooring outside you released mold spores. Next time, seal off the room and put all the affected material in large black plastic bags (the size for leaves 33 gallons) once the bags are sealed you can move them out. I did exactly what you did and a month later after starting to get sick, we had to have professional mold remediation at a cost of $13,000.00 USD. Hopefully you wont have to do that.

    • @jonap5740
      @jonap5740 5 месяцев назад

I had no idea it was that expensive to get professionals to do it. I completely agree with your statements about how to remove it. I'd add that a "mold scrubber" afterwards would help a lot. @@DavidHalpern2

Just a suggestion. An inexpensive interim solution for your rec room flooring is an epoxy paint. You can just install your final flooring right over it, but the cement will look more "finished" until then. I love squirrel being so helpful with the decorating. And ❤ to Charlie. Suggest you use pine-sol to wash down the basement. It will forever get rid of that “urine” smell the dampness causes. Also, you should stick a water hose in the basement drain and flush it out and be sure it is not plugged. You might want to have a sump pump installed in the basement if it does not have one.

Guys.. hopefully, the only mold you find was under that flooring, but you need to pop off a piece of the trim along the floor and check to make sure there's not any growing behind it. As you already know, that mold can make you sick, and I'm sure you'd rather be safe than sorry. The basement looks cozy. The house is gorgeous.

Glad you removed all the moldy flooring. Bad news for anybody down there breathing in potentially harmful spores. Now you have
an easy to take care of, and to clean space. Funny how your kitty feels so at home already down there since the transition from the
dome to that beautiful cabin. She can spend the rest of her "nine lives" just exploring. Your retriever looks like he is healing up pretty
well. Do you think he will get used to being carried everywhere? And lastly you once again amaze me by how well you can take bits

So good to see Charlie doing so well. Basement space is coming together well. Quite handy having that garage door access on that level I'm sure. Squirrel is such a character. When my cats get extra loving and needing like that, it usually means their food bowl has been empty for 5 minutes and they are dying of starvation! My older cat taps my face when I'm asleep at night, so annoying. The view is beautiful from your main living area. I can understand why you enjoy those morning coffees on the deck. You definitely need a fire pit down by the lake for those nice winter days that cry out for mulled wine by a fire! Hi ❤ TODD highly recommend a cervical pillow. I have struggled severely with a reoccurring crick in my neck from a thoracic muscle spasm I had a few years ago. The cervical pillow does give me some relief- takes a little getting used to it, but might help ya! As well as a shoulder/neck heating pad. I feel for you, just the lack of sleep alone from neck pain can drive you insane. 😢 hugs! And warm wishes and holiday cheer your way! 😊😊

    Love the new basement..
    I don’t often throw advice but…..
A great Epoxy finish on the floor , any colour or pattern, so if it floods ever again the concrete will not hold moisture, you will have less chance of growing mould and it’s s freaking easy to keep clean.
If you have some outdoor rugs on the floor as well, they will not get ruined by damp.
Then , later when you can see your way clear, you can tile easily.
Cheers, and I love your new place❤️❤️❤️

Guys, IMHO, before you do anything in the basement, have a hydrological come out check the humidity load, water penetration and flow. I had to put in a full French drain in a basement in a house I once owned. Just a recommendation ❤

Having followed you guys from early days, it took watching "Our dreams have changed, and that's OK" on 'Tangents' (which I absolutely adore) to fully understand why it it was time for you to move on. It wasn't a case of abandoning 'The Land' but deciding to deal with all that it required, especially in the midst of Canadian winters, in a different way. My initial reaction was "Oh no, they're leaving 'The Land'!" but now I get it, 100%. It obviously wasn't easy, far from it, but you made the right decision.
You've fallen on your feet and found an absolutely stunning house on what has to be one of the most beautiful lake-front properties in Nova Scotia. How brilliant is that?!
Life moves in stages. We all arrive at times in our lives when it's time to move on - and from which there will be no going back. That's hard, really hard, but OK. Life would be very boring otherwise. You guys are so obviously together, together, come what may. That is all that matters. You'll figure out the rest and it it won't be exactly what you planned, now or in the future. Enjoy the moment, today, every day and during all the days to come.
As a 74 year-old gay guy, bonded at the hip to my one-time boyfriend, then civil partner, now husband, for 30 years (we first met in 1993 and never looked back), I offer you this quote from 'Avatar': "I see you".
It will be an absolute pleasure to continue following your journey. Your videos and podcasts always brighten up my day. Long may they continue.

    Love it! So cozy!
But.... until you find a way to stop the flooding, putting furniture down there seems premature. There are things you can do. A French Drain will absolutely help. Put in a sump pump and a drain. And a water alarm for sure. Please check behind the floor moldings and the bottom of all the walls for hidden mold. That stuff can make you and your fur babies sick. Loving watching you two work together.

bleach kills mold just keep the garage doors open to air the fumes out. Definitely a sub pump. Hopefully your foundation isn’t cracked under those walls. That’s what happened to my friend and when they took the walls down you could see it.

Tile can lift too with a flood. We have a basement with same issues and we finally just sealed it with epoxy. Best thing ever!! No more mold under flooring.

It's so funny b/c I know exactly what you mean by just hanging out. But my life is exactly the opposite: when I want to "just hang out" I go camping. When I'm there, there's no laundry to do, dishes to wash, kids who need to be taken somewhere, etc. I love it b/c there's literally nothing I CAN do when out there (I go in my air conditioned pop-up w/king-sized bed, lol).
This house is so amazing, so glad you guys are where you wanna be.

Guys, love the new place! if you have an issue with flooding, I recommend that you look into getting a sump pump and possibly a french drain installed and not spend much money fixing up the basement. I have a home that had flooding issues before I purchased it. I purchased it with a French drain, a sump pump, and some material that they put on the walls to prevent water from seeping in. I’m sorry, but I don’t know what that material is called. It’s a significant expense to have that all installed, but I’ve been here for almost 2 years and haven’t seen a drop of water in the basement.
There is also a whole house dehumidifier in the basement that connects directly to the sewer outlet. So you never have to empty a humidifier of water. If you notice any damp smells in the basement, I would strongly recommend that you get that as well.

Instead of going from the outside for the foundation repair, perhaps do as we did and remove the drywall and fnd the crack in the foundation as it does not look like your house has a cinder-block foundation. If you find the cracks in the foundation you can drill holes, insert these nipples in and pump in a liquid that sets and seals the cracks. My husband used to do foundation repairs and this is what he would do first if it was a viable option because it cost saving and much faster, plus all the drywall/drywall studs are probably all moldy anyways

Until you solve the flooding issues, I'd leave the basement floor as is. Just make sure that the drain works, see if you need a pump, and put in a proper drain cover. Even tile can get damaged by floods. Love how the basement set up turned out.

Really good that the flood happened to you so early in your ownership. You mentioned that there had been water and some of the floor removed. But your flood caused you to decide to do the right thing and remove the rest of the flooring, and thus discovering the latent mold that had been there already. Great to get that out of the house! The rec room and Christmas tree look terrific.

Because you had black mold on the floors I think you should find a product that would not allow it to grow back again. They suggest to dry out the moisture and also run a de-humidifier. I don't want to be a Debbie Downer, but I do want both of you and all of your sweet pets to be safe. 💗🌹💗

    • @jonap5740
      @jonap5740 5 месяцев назад

It's going to grow back again because there are mold spores in the air and on the walls and under the wall board. The floor needs to be washed with soap and water or bleach, both are mold killers. They need to hook up their dehumidifier again and an air cleaner. Mold is a really serious issue that needs to be addressed asap.

    Hi Boys
    With our build..
Basement was late to get the floor poured.
    So yes we found mold
So we researched and found a product call MMR and it is a spray on mold remover and prevents it from spreading.
We had it all up in our floor joyces, hubby put on the suit and respiratory mask, rubber gloves and went to work.
I cannot be around strong smells, triggers the asthma...😢
But yeah older homes always have surprises.
In time it will be great..

Paused the video early to say the indoor outdoor fire idea is great! We have a wood stove inside our living room (kind of a box insert one, not freestanding) and on the other side outside it is a regular fireplace surround by stone. It’s so nice. Not see through but same idea. So fun to come up with ideas to make your space cozy!
