4 of the biggest ships on the Great Lakes (and the Queen herself!)

  • It was Soo Super Shipping Sunday! We saw 4 "footers" (1000ft or longer vessels) pass through the Soo Locks on May 19, 2024. Come along as I show you how my drone captured the Edgar B Speer, Presque Isle, Walter J McCarthy Jr, and Paul R Tregurtha. There are only 13 footers in the Lakes, so it's certainly special to see 4 in the same place!
First up was the Edgar B Speer, 1004ft long and built in 1980. Edgar was unfortunately stuck waiting for the locks for a few hours as other ships took priority.
Presque Isle (1000ft long, built in 1977) was coming down through the locks and passed by Edgar. She looked heavy - certainly floating lower than usual with her cargo holds full having just come from Two Harbors. This is a unique vessel, as it is actually a separate tug and barge combo paired together (it looks very awkward seeing the ship without its barge). It's the only one on the great lakes, and the largest of its kind in the world!
Walter J McCarthy Jr (1000ft long, built in 1977) was next up, and again passed by the waiting Edgar B Speer. Walter looked heavy too, having just come from Two Harbors.
Last up, the Queen herself, Paul R Tregurtha (1013.5ft, built in 1981). "Queen of the Lakes" is the title given to the longest ship sailing the Great Lakes. In modern times, ships are generally built smaller and more efficient but these old footers are a sight to behold.

All ships shot on my Mavic 3 Classic drone. Music is licensed from Audiio, and tracks are Glass Keys by Liam Black, and Circles by The Spacies.

I usually catch ships right next to the Soo Locks, so they're either coasting into the locks or just picking up speed coming out of them. There's also a sharp turn just down the river, so sorta a slow speed area. It's a convenient spot for me just off the downtown, but one of these days I'd like to make a trip out and see them at cruising speed!

Those were some great drone shots around the ships. Well done!

Thanks! My comfort level around them has certainly improved. It really helps that they move slow and predictable

These ships are so interesting - I have watched ships going through the Welland Canal locks. They are huge from close up! Wonderful drone video. Thanks

Thanks ☺️ On the other side of the river in Salt Ste Marie, MI there's a couple spots you can get real close to them (the locks viewing platform, and Rotary Park). Seeing those and the Valley Camp museum ship is a day trip I'm starting to plan out!

This is so interesting! Thank you for sharing. This land locked Idahoan appreciates it!

If you're ever able to make it up, they have a viewing platform right at the locks and boat tours that go through them (the small white and yellow ships near the end of the video). Rotary Island Park is where a lot of the ships will salute too

I've gotten frac sand off of one of these in port Arthur TX from Japan Houston ship channel

Neat! These 1000ft ships can't leave the great lakes (too big for the Welland Canal), but many smaller ships can. We get a few ships from the ocean occasionally, the locals call them "salties". Same purpose, but the designs are a bit different.

What video editing software do you use?

DaVinci Resolve! I use the free version which is extremely powerful (today is my first time playing around with text that tracks an object - always just assumed it was hard to do but not really). There is a paid version but honestly I don't even know what features the paid version adds other than a few transitions and video effects. I haven't really tried other video editors other than iMovie back in highschool, but I've really been liking DaVinci
