Mavic 2 Pro Focus Problem Root Cause

    This is how to focus the Mavic Pro 2's camera. By default, Mavic Pro 2 is likely set to auto-focus mode. Auto-focus mode does not provide reliable results in my opinion. This is how I consistently achieve rock-solid video quality from my Mavic 2 Pro. #Mavic2Pro #Howto

    I use autofocus on my Mavic2Pro and I feel like it does me well for the most part but one trick I have learned to do, is if you want to use autofocus on the M2P take a photograph after you start flying. It seems to kick it into autofocus very well. Simplistic, yes but it works for me.

    This was so helpful. AFC is terrible. AF is worse. Who would have ever thought infinity didn't mean infinity. I am so tired of lousy video.

      Thanks! Yep, video that is bot properly focused ruins it. I’ve enjoyed my Mavic Air 2 because the auto-focus on it works exceptionally well!

    I think it's important for your viewers to understand that other drones might have their infinity sweetspot at another position. The reason why the infinity focus is not directly at the end of the scale is to address influences like calibration, temperature, etc.

    • @silbay
      @silbay 5 лет назад

      Just like a lens on a SLR will focus past infinity and always have. You have to wonder just what background many of these toy drone pilots have in video and photography. I vote none

  • @GabrilAvramov
    @GabrilAvramov 5 лет назад +2

    I never used the flower or infinity button and I'm not sure how they work but I know how optics work. You can not just click to "infinity focus". The infinity focus is different according to the conditions (mainly temperature) because the elements contract or expand and that is why you can go beyond infinity, so the elements have space to expand. You need to focus every time to have perfect focus. It's like that for all focusing lenses. AF works perfectly for me, maybe you need to send your drone back.

      Cool. I abandoned the original Mavic Pro because of unpredictable focus. At least with Mavic 2 Pro I can set and forget optimal focus. I wish that it would "just work," like Mavic Air and Phantom 4 though. Neither of those drones failed me because I always felt 100% confident that the video would be perfectly focused.

    I only got the zoom 2 days ago so not had chance to put it through its paces but the zoom function is very good. Wasn’t going to bother with the zoom but when someone on RUclips explained that the zoom could be twice as far away as the pro and still get the same results with the exception of only having the smaller sensor it made sense to get it plus, I am seeing very good footage from the zoom however, the Hasselblad blows me away.

    Wow! The developer messed up here when coding this - Icons are reversed. Good QA find. Hahahaha that is funny but very useful to know. Way to go Rick and great work on this.

    • @IrixGuy
      @IrixGuy  5 лет назад

      Several of my viewers noticed it. It's disturbing that such a gross oversight could have been implemented, within the production app release. It makes me question what else may be wrong that isn't necessarily visible by the end-user.

    • @jackbisson9226
      @jackbisson9226 5 лет назад +1

      You are right. This kind of stuff should not get past their QA team. It looks like their regression tests are not that solid.

    • @IrixGuy
      @IrixGuy  5 лет назад

      The frightening part is that this only causes mistakes, while focusing the camera. Imagine if the same seemingly drunk developer make a mistake like this that affected obstacle avoidance, return to home, how the motors are powered off, etc.

    • @jackbisson9226

      I know I here you. I was just testing the manual focus in my house at 10ft, 20ft, and 30ft. It looks like the 3rd Tick instead of the 2nd Tick is more focused when using manual focus for these distances, or more in the middle between the 2nd and 3rd tick. I think that Billboard test is needed for various distances? But I was in 2.8 aperture, The Film Poets are saying F4 is the sharpest for this camera. I will try f4.

    • @jackbisson9226
      @jackbisson9226 5 лет назад

      I tried f4 and I am getting between the 2nd and 3rd tick / hash line for the peek lines to show bright red. I am sure the farther away it will approach the 2nd tick. Rick the billboard test; we would love that.

    This is about the fourth vid or so you’ve done RE proper focus Keeps changing ? Haven’t seen anyone else RE problem focusing ? Thanks for taking time to review. Have you thought it might be a drone issue ? Wonder what DJI would have to say regarding the problem.

    • @IrixGuy
      @IrixGuy  5 лет назад

      So my Mavic 2 Pro First Flight video was poorly focused because I used AF...just like I had done with my Mavic Air and achieved OUTSTANDING results. I used manual focus for all videos after that and all were OUTSTANDING until my Mavic 2 Pro Chasing the Boat video. I "dug in" and discovered that DJI had updated the app and manual focus behavior within DJI Go App changed. I used to click the infinity symbol to achieve perfect focus but that no longer work. It turns out that the flower icon has to be clicked instead of the infinity icon now to achieve perfect focus. I don't know if that was a mistake that a developer made or what. It seems strange that achieving perfect focus would be accomplished by not clicking the infinity symbol. I'm taking Mavic 2 Pro back to the field now for the next round of testing. Stay tuned for my videos and let me know how you feel that she performed. #Mavic2Pro

    • @richardpalmer4594
      @richardpalmer4594 5 лет назад

      For your next round of testing I would like to see you at f5.6 versus f2.8, also try for better lighting. I'm going to try the manual focus flower icon thing on my M2P and see if the focus is better. That would be outstanding in that my AF with the peak focus threshold at 90 works very well. I suspect that the AF feature struggles in poor lighting. Most pro shutterbugs calibrate their lenses, esp the longer zoom lenses, in that there is a mild variation from lens to lens from the factory. I have had to calibrate all my zoom lenses. I wonder if the dji lenses also have a variation in their camera lenses also? I think for now becoming proficient at both MF and AF is the ticket.

    There's got to be a way to get that thing to auto focus. I hope you can figure it out so you can get the results you want from the drone. I think it is too difficult to use a manual focus on a drone because you just can't see the fine details you need to focus on a small screen, also if you can't stop that slider at the exact spot you need you're out of luck.

    • @IrixGuy
      @IrixGuy  5 лет назад

      AF never worked for me. It was either horrible or only moderately focused. I can not depend on it like I can my Mavic Air or Phantom 4 AF.

  • @richardpalmer4594
    @richardpalmer4594 5 лет назад +1

    Ok I tried the manual focus thing hitting the infinity logo and it worked fine, tried the AF tap method and it worked fine. Not really seeing a difference as of this time. Will continue to test out the manual focus method. I use a large I pad but I still don't 100% trust my vision on the manual focus, so yes I will test MF using the tap the infinity icon thing. Its a win win for me cause both methods seem to give great results. Not sure which go app version I have but the icons were not reversed.

      Hey man please consider checking out my website when you do. I have all Mavic 2 models and accessories there. I’ve been flying drones since Phantom 1 and this is the first time ever that I’ve witnessed something like this within the app. SURELY it was the result of a mistake that a developer made and was overlooked by QA (if they even have a quality review process). Regardless, it has been frustrating but despite the temporary frustration, Mavic 2 Pro is still my favorite drone on the market today. It’s extremely portable, reliable, sports phenomenal battery life and has the best camera that I’ve ever used on a drone to date. The low-light performance continues to blow my mind. Maybe this will function as a “lesson learned” and DJI will begin to more thoroughly review and test their updates, before releasing their customers. #Mavic2Pro

      yeah, it is really wired, now I touch the flower, the upper edge of the big white bar will just touch the 2nd tick, yesterday there is a gap... this morning I talked to the DJI customer service, they showed me a screen record of mavic pro LOL, and told me when you click the flower it will go to the infinite side and if you click infinite icon it goes to the flower side. So it is not inverted. I asked them to use mavic 2 pro, and they said they don't have it right now LOL. You know DJI tech is great but their service really sucks. For Chinese, they creative an account on the wechat(like line or what'sapp) so that you can have a live chat with the customer service. But I know for customers in other countries, they can only send emails and wait long time for a response... (even live chat they are not able to explain clearly many times, as I think many of them do not even fly their own products)So I always rely on the drone expert like you. Thanks very much, and will always follow your channel.

    Just like I told you before you ever got the M2P, you'd probably be happier with the MA since you don't have to worry about focus like you were complaining with your MP. I still believe you are going to get great results with auto focus IF you continue to fly at heights you have been. If you ever take it to Cane Creek CNP and do those videos along the creek, I believe you may have problems. Again, I have no problems with auto focus on my MP when I use C1 as center focus, which I push before recording. If I do it after record, it is blurry but for a second after pressing C1 and then it is continuously blurry.

  • @dharlow5810

    There are many other M2P users who also have the Phamtom 4 Pro. Almost all of them are now saying that the P4 has the better camera. Just having the Hasselblad name on the front of this camera doesn't mean it's a Hasselblad camera. It is not. On another subject, I do believe you may have a bad drone Rick. No one else is having to resort to manual focus to get a good sharp video. I'm not sure how you prove that, but it sure seems as though you may have a bad one. Keep up the good videos!

      Regardless of brand printed on it, this is the best drone camera that I have used to date. It doesn’t do 4K60 but is better than Phantom 4 Pro and Mavic Air cameras IMO. Given the price of medium format Hasselblad cameras, I agree that it’s not a “real” Hasselblad but it definitely has the Hasselblad color science. #Hasselblad

    The Drone is one of the best on the market today, except for the camera. Which needs a lot of work. To test the focus, take a
    REAL one-inch sensor from let's say a Canon and compare the clarity.
    DJI cannot get a good focus on the cheap. The camera department quality control person must have been sick or on holidays and never checked it over.
    I am sure he is back at work now with his hands full. I would wait to buy this drone until DJI fixes this poor focus problem. Then wait a week at least to have people test it once more.

    • @IrixGuy
      @IrixGuy  5 лет назад

      I love the camera but dislike the effort required to focus it. How infinity focus changed from tapping “infinity” to tapping “flower” has stumped me. Sick, holidays or drunk is my guess....maybe a combination of both. That’d be like saying that a “stop” sign means to go LOL
