Honestly, just use your screwdriver to disassemble things a lot and then go to warehouse or factory, disassemble the door if it's locked, then you're bound to find a sledgehammer there.
I introduced my girlfriend to Zomboid and we have a multiplayer server we play on together. in our second run we both found civilian bulletproof vests! She's surprised me so much with how she can survive that we've taken trips to multiple cities and are now gearing up for Louisville!
That civilian bulletproof vest is beautiful. I found it once and i would wear it for as long as I can until I get to Louisville military checkpoint. And by then, I would equip all military outfit and roleplay as soldier next. But that civilian vest is still with me all patched up and stay strong, cuz I never found a second civilian vest ever for the rest of my gameplay

i found a spiffo zombie completely alone in the middle of the highway west of rosewood just a few days ago on my currently 4 month (not irl months) long run, after nearly 500 of gameplay! too bad it already had a hole in one of the arms, but i still got the full suit
The rarest item is always "that one thing I want right now" because the moment the need comes, its like all of em despawn at once and even the place you are SURE you saw some in earlier don't have those items any more.
I looked through every house in Riverside, every self-storage unit southwest of Riverside, every house in the farming village between Riverside and Rosewood, before finally heading down to Rosewood where I finally found a single generator. The game loves fucking with you. Funny part was that I found three sledgehammers before finding that generator.
I have been playing an extreme difficulty run (all loot is set to lowest possible value, zombie multiplier 4.0 and farming nerfed to the ground), and had a picture of Kate foraged and placed on my shelves. Had no idea it's so rare
In my 2000 hours of Zomboid I have only found a single pair of leather pants. They give the same protection as firefighter pants but can be repaired, I wish they spawn more often. :(

For the katana it seems that the more days that pass the more % you have to find it on zombies, having played on a vanilla mp server that was 3 years into the apocalypse I found three katanas in my first hours with a character. As for the M16 it used to spawn only at the secret millitary lab, but now only spawns at the Louisville millitary checkpoint, there is a huge locked container full of crates around the middle of the army camp, you'll almost always find m16's inside as well as many m14's
I have found m16 in boarded up survivor houses. Also just at random camping scenes with zombies. Idk if I am lucky or what if but I have found a couple and I have like 300 hours in. Also never been to louisville or militairy compound south east of rosewood... And I always play with unlucky trait. With loot spawns on default settings in sandbox mode
Funny thing about the leather pants was that I had never found them in over 1500 hours. Then on our server, we kept finding them everywhere (insanely rare loot). Have never found any more after that on any server or solo world.
Ah, you forgot some. The 150 Home VHS's that spawn only once per map, have a chance to be in all loot places, including Car Glove Compartments and Trunks. I started a new map specifically just to hunt these. One guy said he got 40 out of 150.
On an 8~ months in game long term save now and hunting home VHS tapes is one of my long term goals! I've almost emptied West Point, hit a bunch of other places and still probably only have about 10-15 of them in 8 months, with systematically looting an entire major town, those suckers are super rare. Never found the ones that give free XP like the tailoring ones, the AV club for electrical, or anything else like that, sadly.
I remember after one year of playing zomboid, looking through houses and found the leather trousers. well i've heard that katanas only spawn on zombies after day 60 (according to the project zomboid lore survivors in the exclusion zone will start to die more often at further days because of lack of food,power and water and gunshots and screams will be heard more often.) so it makes sense but I just went to west point with debug mode to fight a horde with the gear up music (you know the project zomboid killing spree chase music) and then i suddenly saw a zombie with a katana in her stomach. It was day 1 not day 60. I can say that it not only spawns on zombies after day 60 but extremely rarely before day 60 but more common in massive hordes. sorry for making it too long.
fun fact: Katana, can always one-shot a zom who has 2 pieces of thin clothes at max. Those with firefighter suit, armor, leather jacket.... takes 2-3 hits, since they're thicker, of course
you could have mentioned the ecstasy of gold, a lot of gold bars hidden in a cemetery inside louisville, i would say that it is strange because there is only 1 in the whole game and you have to go with a sledgehammer to open the mausoleum and take it
The civilian bulletproof vest does have a use - its insulation is worse than either of the other vests, which means that if you're trying to absolutely load yourself down with armor, it'll stop you from overheating as much.
I could almost swear, the leather pants also spawn in survivor homes. I play a save with twice the base game file size taken by mods but pretty commonly in survivor homes I find leather trousers, along with ammo straps, belts, mil boots and leather gloves
I would like to add, first 3 all can be found in pawnshops in LV with a very good likelihood. Also Kate's picture can be found in Kate and Baldspot's house in Muldraugh if it spawns barricaded.
You forgot the sentient "How to use a generator" magazine. Apparently it chooses to spawn for me when I´m playing an electrician or already got the skills to use a generator, but hides when I need it.

It seems like every playthrough has that one item you can never find. I've been through 50 houses without finding a can opener. In another game, I had to stop playing cause I couldn't find any of the car manuals and had limited ability to repair vehicles. Rare things are always rare, but there's always that one common thing you just can't find anywhere and it's different in every game.
I’ve only played about 400 hours or so, and I found an M-16 on a military Zed one time outside of Louisville. He had an M-16 with mag, 1911 pistol, helmet, and camouflage uniform with boots. I called it a guard Zed, and he was wandering around that Army outpost barracks area with the houses. It’s the Army outpost you come to when you head straight out of Rosewood as you pass the gas station on your right. You follow the paved road until you come to a dirt road on your left. The houses and out post are down the dirt road. I check every Army barracks outside of Louisville for the event every time I play, but never found him again. It was part of the vanilla game, since I don’t use weapon mods. Those Army barracks are great because the do have nice gear there. I’ve found military backpacks, hunting knives, boots, M-16 mags, M-16 ammo, various pistol ammo, but mostly clothes.
The Kate picture can also be found as a guaranteed spawn in the bob and Kate house, check if it has been boarded up and the back end where the kitchen is should be burnt out, a bob and Kate zombie will spawn upstairs and the Kate zombie will have the picture
I'm only about 400hrs in. Found Leather pants twice, katana twice. Many sledge (one time I found 2 next to each other at rosewood firehouse). One of the rarest for me has been the car battery charger. Found it once then lost it in the trunk of some car.
I found 4!! Chargers in the American Tyre building in WP, my starting city. My other char, 511 days in, found only one so far. Also the baby-toon found a sledge on day 2, next day a genny, but the magazine waited almost a full month to show up. Farewell, darkness! Also, started without power and water, so, no tv shows or VHS for a month! Feels just like one of those groundings in my teen years lol.

Sledge hammers and M16s are easy to find if you know where to look for them. Sledge hammers at hardware and roadwork construction. The M16 can be in specific gun stores that have the big military crates. The trousers are also pretty easy I owned like 6 pairs when doing my 3 month survival run, just looted the survivor houses and boom. Katana and spiffing suit are a bit rare except for the spiffo tail.
In Muldraugh, after several playthrough, I once found Skinny Leather Trousers worn by Zomboid. Twice found both Leather Trousers and Skinny version inside a trailer house northern of Muldraugh.
the civilian bullet proof armor is supposted to be rare? in my last run i had a small mountain of those. but the other stuff is elusive to me. the hunt for the sledge will never end

So on my latest playthrough I got very lucky and found a survivor house with an M16 and a full mag in it, but I think I'm going to have a hard time finding more ammo for it, so gonna save it for a special occasion

Something he forgot about the sledgehammer is it can be found alongside a pickup truck with around 4 construction workers, unknown to most people its not always around a sewer access tunnel, it can be found in the middle of a highway inbetween two cities, within louisville (mostly around the sewer access pipes) and very rarely residential zones.
Spawned next to a survivor home once. I got an M-16 on day one as a result. Never got to use it on account of there being no 5.56 ammo anywhere in the house, just .223 which was considered incompatible for some reason.
i managed to find 2 full condition katanas in the apartment for one of the shops in rosewood. i was completely shocked and wondered if it either was a glitch or i just hit the jackpot.
Some more items that are extremely rare in the game: - Spiffo plush toy. Can only be found in toy stores and is extremely rare on dead zombies. - Wedding clothes. Can only be found on very rare zombies at weddings. - Festive hats. The same situation as wedding clothes - can be founded only on zombies at rare house parties. - Items for chess, checkers and backgammon. Can be founded only at houses and storages. If we also consider the tiles, that can be picked up as an item, then there will be several more items that appear in the game in one single copy: - Two abstract paintings on the third floor of the Louisville Art Gallery. - Paintings with US Presidents on the first floor of the same building. Also, if you trying to find a some of those rare items, then know that the "Lucky" perk greatly increases the chance of finding such items.
I think as I reach 100 hours on PZ and a lil bit research, I found out that the Civ bulletproof vest are good for summer due to no insulation and wind resistant, the army one have the most insulation, and then the police one have middle stats of civ and army version.
Imagine running into a zombie with a civilian bullet proof vest, with leather trousers, with the m16 on their back, a katana stabbed inside the zombie, with the spiffo costume on, wit kates picture on them.

Suture Needle Holder seems pretty rare. I have looted at least 2 maybe 3 ambulances and 1 clinic/doctors office in my current game, but found only 1 Suture Needle Holder. I have yet to find a Flashlight, I've found tons of Hand Torches, but no Flashlights, which are required to craft Light On A Pole. Irritating that you can't use Hand Torches
I remember I was getting chased by a horde while desperately searching for a place to stay and I found a burnt but boarded up house which I quickly realized that it was the home of Kate and I found the picture inside I was really hyped about it

The whole thing about the rarest item to find is the one you search for is so true. I couldn’t find a sledgehammer in the factories in Riverside on so many runs. The one run where I decide I’m going there for just metal sheets and propane, I find TWO sledgehammers. The game is mocking me, I swear.

The lead pipe is surprisingly rare. It's the second rarest melee weapon, after the katana. Rarer than the machete, even. I'll find 3-6 machetes before I find a single lead pipe. Metal pipes are extremely common, but you can go months without seeing a lead pipe
I think they made the sledgehammer more common sometime after this video? I seem to find it without too much difficulty these days, but i do remember on one world searching every single warehouse and hardware store outside Louisville with no luck
I'd say charcoal is pretty rare in the base game, it took me probably 300+ hours to find a naturally spawning bag of it, and without mods the only really guaranteed way to get it is from those few open metal drum barrels outside of LV in the refugee camp. Even with constantly hitting warehouses and garages I was almost convinced you needed a barrel to make it, I needed some for Def's Long Term Survival which I got around the 300 hour mark and never found any before that; of course after I trekked all the way to LV just for a barrel, I looted a bag in one of the warehouses between Muldraugh and March Ridge for the first time, lmao.
Golfer zombie is super rare, I think I've seen maybe one? I would put the Golfer right under the katana. Definitely more rare than the Spiffo zed. I didn't even know leather trousers existed, I'll have to keep my eyes open. I have a lot of stuff that clogs up the clothes loot tables.
i found leather trousers once and died almost instantly cause a ninja zombie was right outside the door (i door flashed but he was just slightly out of sight and made no noise) it was the only time i found them ever lol

Did you know that another way to find the sledge hammer is to drive on the road and when you find the maintence truck theres a chance for one to be on the ground. 3 Days ago me and my friend found one, we had to tear down the gun store, a lot of zombies when that alarm sounded.
I had no idea the skinny leather pants were so rare, my current longest surviving character found a pair really early and now I now it's all thanks to the PANTS!!

you can increase spawn chances on servers. your friends mightve increased spawn chances or you just got super lucky.
The white civilian bulletproof vest is secretly the best vest because it has the least warmth and insulation, so you don’t overheat.

Sledge hammer can be found at mini events along the roads. Usually on he ground next to a pickup truck (or in the truck itself).
The biohazard chemical mask is extremely hard to get as you can only get it via foraging and it has a low chance of being found.

Leather trousers tend to spawn most often in wardrobes in boarded up houses
It seems like every playthrough has that one item you can never find. I've been through 50 houses without finding a can opener. In another game, I had to stop playing cause I couldn't find any of the car manuals and had limited ability to repair vehicles. Rare things are always rare, but there's always that one common thing you just can't find anywhere and it's different in every game.
I’ve only played about 400 hours or so, and I found an M-16 on a military Zed one time outside of Louisville. He had an M-16 with mag, 1911 pistol, helmet, and camouflage uniform with boots. I called it a guard Zed, and he was wandering around that Army outpost barracks area with the houses. It’s the Army outpost you come to when you head straight out of Rosewood as you pass the gas station on your right. You follow the paved road until you come to a dirt road on your left. The houses and out post are down the dirt road. I check every Army barracks outside of Louisville for the event every time I play, but never found him again. It was part of the vanilla game, since I don’t use weapon mods.
Those Army barracks are great because the do have nice gear there. I’ve found military backpacks, hunting knives, boots, M-16 mags, M-16 ammo, various pistol ammo, but mostly clothes.
I found the Civilian bulletproof vest way more often than any of these items
The Kate picture can also be found as a guaranteed spawn in the bob and Kate house, check if it has been boarded up and the back end where the kitchen is should be burnt out, a bob and Kate zombie will spawn upstairs and the Kate zombie will have the picture
I'm only about 400hrs in. Found Leather pants twice, katana twice. Many sledge (one time I found 2 next to each other at rosewood firehouse). One of the rarest for me has been the car battery charger. Found it once then lost it in the trunk of some car.
I found 4!! Chargers in the American Tyre building in WP, my starting city. My other char, 511 days in, found only one so far. Also the baby-toon found a sledge on day 2, next day a genny, but the magazine waited almost a full month to show up. Farewell, darkness! Also, started without power and water, so, no tv shows or VHS for a month! Feels just like one of those groundings in my teen years lol.

never knew the civ bulletproof vests were rare i found 2 of them in one survivor house, it was one of the mansions at the gated community in riverside.
Sledge hammers and M16s are easy to find if you know where to look for them. Sledge hammers at hardware and roadwork construction. The M16 can be in specific gun stores that have the big military crates. The trousers are also pretty easy I owned like 6 pairs when doing my 3 month survival run, just looted the survivor houses and boom. Katana and spiffing suit are a bit rare except for the spiffo tail.
In Muldraugh, after several playthrough, I once found Skinny Leather Trousers worn by Zomboid. Twice found both Leather Trousers and Skinny version inside a trailer house northern of Muldraugh.
the civilian bullet proof armor is supposted to be rare? in my last run i had a small mountain of those. but the other stuff is elusive to me. the hunt for the sledge will never end

I always manage to get sledgehammers in Fire Department Storage rooms or overall metal shelfs. Never knew construction sideroad events had sledgehammers
I tend to find sledges easily but never find civilian bullet proof vests at all. I think it all comes down to the types of places you tend to loot.
So on my latest playthrough I got very lucky and found a survivor house with an M16 and a full mag in it, but I think I'm going to have a hard time finding more ammo for it, so gonna save it for a special occasion

Something he forgot about the sledgehammer is it can be found alongside a pickup truck with around 4 construction workers, unknown to most people its not always around a sewer access tunnel, it can be found in the middle of a highway inbetween two cities, within louisville (mostly around the sewer access pipes) and very rarely residential zones.
Spawned next to a survivor home once. I got an M-16 on day one as a result. Never got to use it on account of there being no 5.56 ammo anywhere in the house, just .223 which was considered incompatible for some reason.
i managed to find 2 full condition katanas in the apartment for one of the shops in rosewood. i was completely shocked and wondered if it either was a glitch or i just hit the jackpot.
Some more items that are extremely rare in the game:
- Spiffo plush toy. Can only be found in toy stores and is extremely rare on dead zombies.
- Wedding clothes. Can only be found on very rare zombies at weddings.
- Festive hats. The same situation as wedding clothes - can be founded only on zombies at rare house parties.
- Items for chess, checkers and backgammon. Can be founded only at houses and storages.
If we also consider the tiles, that can be picked up as an item, then there will be several more items that appear in the game in one single copy:
- Two abstract paintings on the third floor of the Louisville Art Gallery.
- Paintings with US Presidents on the first floor of the same building.
Also, if you trying to find a some of those rare items, then know that the "Lucky" perk greatly increases the chance of finding such items.
- biohazard protection suit, only spawns on zombies in military/police locations
I think as I reach 100 hours on PZ and a lil bit research, I found out that the Civ bulletproof vest are good for summer due to no insulation and wind resistant, the army one have the most insulation, and then the police one have middle stats of civ and army version.
Ive seen the skinny leather pants in survivor homes in the same places you would find the civilian bullet proof vest, wardrobes, closets, etc.
What about the HottieZ magazine? I have never found it in game.
The RAREST ITEMS in Project Zomboid are the ones I exatly need for something and never seem to find do to bad RNG
Imagine running into a zombie with a civilian bullet proof vest, with leather trousers, with the m16 on their back, a katana stabbed inside the zombie, with the spiffo costume on, wit kates picture on them.
You can find skinny leather trousers in survivor homes. Make sure you check everythong. Might be a zomboid with a large backpack too.
1,000+ hours in the game and I have found every single one of those except for the Spiffo suit. It eludes me.

I found a sledgehammer and a katana in my multiplayer world, but we deleted said world because another friend was joining (who had never played before) and we wanted to give him an authentic experience

Well i have found, 2 civilian vests, in boarded up houses, a couple sledge hammers on warehouses and one time in the road beside a pickup truck. And recently found a M16 in the louisville military camp that encloses the town.

Suture Needle Holder seems pretty rare. I have looted at least 2 maybe 3 ambulances and 1 clinic/doctors office in my current game, but found only 1 Suture Needle Holder. I have yet to find a Flashlight, I've found tons of Hand Torches, but no Flashlights, which are required to craft Light On A Pole. Irritating that you can't use Hand Torches
I remember I was getting chased by a horde while desperately searching for a place to stay and I found a burnt but boarded up house which I quickly realized that it was the home of Kate and I found the picture inside I was really hyped about it

Of those, I have found the Sledgehammer a few times in weird locations such as next to a car being worked on with it's tire off on the freeway, and I have only found the picture of Kate once and me being the idiot that I am I accidentally hit the discard button rather then the pick up button.

The whole thing about the rarest item to find is the one you search for is so true. I couldn’t find a sledgehammer in the factories in Riverside on so many runs. The one run where I decide I’m going there for just metal sheets and propane, I find TWO sledgehammers. The game is mocking me, I swear.

Idk what my server’s spawn settings are but I’ve found a civilian bulletproof vest in so many houses. Like at least 10 and I’ve never taken them because I didn’t know they were that rare lmao

The lead pipe is surprisingly rare. It's the second rarest melee weapon, after the katana. Rarer than the machete, even. I'll find 3-6 machetes before I find a single lead pipe. Metal pipes are extremely common, but you can go months without seeing a lead pipe
Katanas can also spawn in Pawn Shops. Check the counters near the cash register. Thats where I found my first weeabu sword yes

I found a civilian bulletproof vest in a random building, and I didn't even know it was rare.
I'd say charcoal is pretty rare in the base game, it took me probably 300+ hours to find a naturally spawning bag of it, and without mods the only really guaranteed way to get it is from those few open metal drum barrels outside of LV in the refugee camp. Even with constantly hitting warehouses and garages I was almost convinced you needed a barrel to make it, I needed some for Def's Long Term Survival which I got around the 300 hour mark and never found any before that; of course after I trekked all the way to LV just for a barrel, I looted a bag in one of the warehouses between Muldraugh and March Ridge for the first time, lmao.
i'm almost 600 hours in and i've only found 2 katanas! the sledge can also be found randomly at the trucks by manholes with the 4 traffic cones.
Golfer zombie is super rare, I think I've seen maybe one? I would put the Golfer right under the katana. Definitely more rare than the Spiffo zed.

Did you know that another way to find the sledge hammer is to drive on the road and when you find the maintence truck theres a chance for one to be on the ground. 3 Days ago me and my friend found one, we had to tear down the gun store, a lot of zombies when that alarm sounded.
I had no idea the skinny leather pants were so rare, my current longest surviving character found a pair really early and now I now it's all thanks to the PANTS!!
