  • Silhouette decoys have been around an awful long time for Canada goose hunting but have made a big resurgence in recent years. Back in the day, many hunters used Outlaw and Real Geese silhouette decoys and than the full-body decoy craze hit. Many hunters began using big spreads of full body decoys and many decoy spreads started to look all the same to the geese. Over the past five years, skinny decoys have made a big come back as these silhouette decoys are cheap, effective and give the birds a much different look. Flocked black silhouette decoys in particular are extremely visible and look extremely realistic from a long distance. For maximum contrast, flocked black stands out in chisel plowed fields, winter wheat and disked up fields where there is a dark ground. When geese get pressured, successful decoy hunting is often about zigging when everybody else is zagging. Making the spread appear different from most of the spreads geese are seeing on a daily basis.

It’s all I’ve used for close to 60 years. The new lite weight ones are fantastic.

Great/nostalgic information I’m guessing we hunted basically during the same time period. I still use my 30 year old G&H super mags to cover the holes on my pit blind. Had the outlaw silhouettes but they shined too much especially on sunny days. Have a couple dozen of the Real Geese silhouettes great durable decoys but stakes are hard to use. Then I slowly changed all my spread to Bigfoots. Now I use Dave Smiths for my full body spread but have been using Dive Bomb silhouettes more and more especially when I want big numbers. Just bought a bunch of their fully flocked silhouettes and looking forward to trying them. I’ve hunted honkers for over 40 years now. It’s a little harder to do but I still love it.

I use silos only when I have to.,packing in long walks or need bigger spread. I find the geese finish much easier and closer with fullbody spreads.I hunt small population of Great Basin Honkers and generally our total flocks in 3 valleys we hunt are only between 300 to 1000and mostly residents.

I’ve been running Dive Bombs for the mass and full bodies in the kill hole. Our geese were getting hip to just silos so I mixed things up. Should work until it doesn’t. Thanks J🦆🦆🦆🦆

Silos are higher vis compared to full bodies brings them in from long distances. I've shot thousands of birds over homemade silos over a 60-year period.
