Loved the comment about not buying gear in hopes that it will get you a job. I needed to hear that

I shot this whole year of video on my iPhone 11. Most productive year I have had to date... With that being said I just got the Red Komodo. You guys nailed a lot of great points. My analogy is this... A good contractor could build a shed with just a hammer, but a drill can make the job go smoother plus you look a lot more professional when you show up with a drill over the hammer. Thanks for the content.

Great episode! Biggest L of a purchase wasn't actually a bad purchase; It was the lack of investing into a good lighting/gaff arsenal before our camera/lens kit(s). With that being said, the best purchase was definitely our two Z-CAM E2-F6's, which are similar in specs to the Komodo.

My biggest L: I dropped 2.2k on the Rokinon cine lens kit with the 24, 35, 50, and 85 back in 2018 when I was just starting out. Bought them because the cinematographer on a web series I was on had them. It was way before I learned what lenses to buy and why someone should buy cinema lenses over photography lenses. At that time, I was doing more photo work and didn't realize how dumb it was to not invest in lenses that allowed autofocus. It caused me so many headaches and slightly out of focus shots on photo gigs. By the time I wanted to sell them a year later, they were really hard to regain my money back since they don't do great on the resale market.
Best purchase: Either my sigma 24 to 70 mm f/2.8 for the sony e mount or the MacBook pro 16 GB ram M1 chip. That lens has changed my whole photography and video work. It's my most used lens, and I recommend it to every person I know. The laptop saved me and finally made me portable. The system is soooo much faster than what I was using, can handle higher end video files, and made my workflow 5x faster.

I appreciate the insights of your buying journeys lol I'm guilty myself for some purchases that are colleting dust as we speak but those instruments have a purpose though just haven't done a project lately that requires it 😅

I like to tell people to rent what you need for each project if it calls for it …I have an ursa mini 4.6k that’s fine and pretty good ..I shout mostly with that..but I know it’s limits ..depending on the project you need to step the camera up or invest in lighting and colorist ..a lot of factors goes into this

I agree it’s hard to not focus on tech when that’s the only thing you see on RUclips. Although there are some people out there that speak the truth like you guys. Real artists can create with the simplest tools. Thanks for another great take💪🏻

my biggest L: Bought a new red epic dragon dsmc1 in jan of 2016 for 45k. March 2016 dsmc2 is announced and killed the resell value down all the way to when i eventually sold it in Aug 2017 for 13k smh

I've seen some really great videos filmed on the Canon 550d for example. Nowadays, there's so much hype into getting the latest gear. Camera manufactures will release new gear every year. I own a sony fs700 (made in 2012) and still create great stuff on it paired with Odyssey 7q+

Yeah I agree with a lot of the points made. I do think the in some cases, financing something like a camera could be beneficial, even if you have the cash but just in a case of cash flow purposes or even if you can’t quite afford to pay it cash but you know it’ll make its money back, it could be a risk worth taking. It was for myself anyway, to build to a point where I could afford more things cash.

Worst investment? Has to be the drone due to not using it as much as I thought. I will say the software does most of the job with picking and choose the focus point then fly around getting multiple movements.
Best investment? Lights and Lens just to keep a low ISO with lights and getting a sharp image with lens.

    1. Steadicam.. bought it years ago and only used it a handful of times!
    2. a7S II hands down I love that camera, it’s such a beast!
Feel free to check out my work filmed with that camera in my video portfolio here.

My biggest L is probably my EasyRig. Great piece of gear but just don't use it like I thought I would. Second would probably be my drone. Although it comes in handy at times, living in LA area, its so restrictive about where im able to fly, living near a major airport. Live and learn lol.
