I coached men's basketball way back late 1970's at an NAIA school, and we could not match what D1 and D2 schools were offering. School did legally let the athletes eat for free, 14 meals a week. A dinner kicked in breakfast m thru f)( .We had Men's hoops, women's hoops, men's xc, women's soccer, and M/W golf. Baseball and softball were club level back then. The NAIA back then was all one division. Big (5,000+ student enrollment) down to tiny (200) students schools competed at the same level. Country was broken down into 32 districts. 32 district winners of all sizes would come together for the National basketball tournament, played at the old Kemper Arena in Kansas City. First game was tip off at 730 AM. Game after game all day long. Teams would sleep in the arena. It was freaking great.
