Story Time: Jian stood at the base of the colossal statue, the smooth stone face of Mingzhong, god of time, staring down at him with an expression of eternal indifference. The mist swirled around the craggy peaks of the Shuinai Range, cloaking the ancient figure in an otherworldly veil. Mingzhong’s eyes, though carved from stone, seemed to see through the haze of time itself-past, present, and future. Jian had traveled far to reach this place. The journey had taken him weeks, through treacherous passes and desolate stretches of rock that had claimed many lives before him. The stories of Mingzhong’s terrifying power were whispered in taverns and around campfires. Few dared to approach the god’s domain, and fewer still returned to speak of what they had seen. Of those, only one was known to have survived. Jian had grown up hearing these stories, yet something within him had urged him to make the climb. A question, buried deep in his soul, needed answering. As he stood before the statue, Jian felt the weight of time press down on him. His journey to the peak now seemed insignificant. The path that had seemed so difficult was nothing compared to the vastness of the presence that loomed before him. He had expected grandeur, but this-this was something else. The sheer scale of the statue was beyond comprehension. It was not simply large in size; it felt as though Mingzhong existed outside of time and space, a being whose true form could not be perceived by mortal eyes. Jian dropped to his knees, not out of reverence but because his legs had begun to tremble uncontrollably. His breath caught in his throat as he stared at the stone face. There was no escape from its gaze. Then, the silence was broken-not by sound, but by thought. A voice, deep and resonant, echoed in Jian’s mind, though his ears heard nothing. "You seek answers," it said. The voice was neither kind nor cruel; it simply was, eternal and unyielding. Jian struggled to focus. The presence of Mingzhong was overwhelming, filling his mind with images-fractured moments of time slipping past him. He saw brief glimpses of lives lived centuries ago, of futures yet to come, all blending into one incomprehensible swirl. His own life, his memories, his desires, seemed to pale in comparison to the weight of these visions. "Why have you come?" the god asked, though the question seemed almost rhetorical, as though Mingzhong already knew the answer. Jian took a deep breath, trying to ground himself in the present. He had come for knowledge, yes, but he had also come for something deeper-understanding, perhaps. He had climbed the peaks in search of a truth that had eluded him his entire life. The world below was in constant flux, driven by conflict, ambition, and greed. But up here, with the god of time, all of that seemed so small. "I want to know if we can change," Jian whispered, the words feeling small and foolish in the face of eternity. "Can we alter the path we're on?" “Time is a loop,” came the answer, each word burning into Jian’s mind. “Change is an illusion. You cannot escape it. You cannot stop it. You are a part of it.” Jian’s heart sank. The visions swirled again, and he saw his own life stretching out before him-a series of endless repetitions. The choices he thought he had made were meaningless; every step had been taken before, countless times. His life was not a single thread but part of an intricate weave, a pattern repeating itself over and over, across centuries. Every decision, every act, merely ripples in an endless sea of time. "Is there no way to break free?" Jian asked, his voice faltering. The enormity of the realization crashed down on him. "Is there no way out of the loop?" The silence that followed was suffocating, and when Mingzhong finally spoke again, it was with the same calm certainty as before. "You can step out of time, but it will continue without you. Your fate, your existence, is woven into the fabric of eternity. Only through acceptance will you find peace." Jian felt the weight of those words like a physical blow. His breath grew shallow as the realization sunk in. There would be no escape. No matter how hard he tried to change his course, to carve a new path, he was trapped within the current of time, as was everyone. His journey to this peak, his desperate need for answers-none of it had truly mattered. It was simply part of the cycle. “What happens to me now?” Jian asked, his voice barely a whisper. “You return,” Mingzhong replied, the voice in his mind like the finality of a closing door. “As you always have.” Jian struggled to his feet, his body trembling with weakness. He had come seeking answers, and now that he had them, he wished he hadn’t. He looked down at the jagged path below, the craggy ridges obscured by the swirling mist. The descent seemed infinitely more dangerous than the climb. He felt drained-physically, mentally, and spiritually. For the first time since he had set foot on the mountain, Jian doubted he would make it back. The mountain felt different now, more alive, as though it had absorbed him into its folds. He was part of it, like those before him, those who had never returned. The thought unsettled him, but there was a strange sense of calm that followed, as though he had accepted his fate. He took a few steps toward the narrow path, but his legs wavered. He looked out over the peaks, the mist swirling like time itself, and realized with a chill that the stories were true. So many had climbed to this summit, and only a few had returned. Perhaps it wasn’t the god of time that claimed them. Perhaps it was the mountain, a living force that absorbed those who dared to seek its secrets. His thoughts drifted to the legends-the whispers of people who had ascended these peaks, never to be seen again. They had become part of the mountain, woven into its essence. Perhaps he would join them. Perhaps this was the way of things. As he stared out into the abyss, he wondered if the mountain had always been waiting for him, for this very moment. The mist thickened, and Jian’s legs felt weaker still. He wasn’t sure if he could make the descent. The jagged rocks below loomed large in his mind, and with each passing second, the mountain seemed to grow taller, its peaks more impossible to navigate. He could feel it now-the pull. The mountain called to him, its ancient voice blending with that of Mingzhong. Time was a loop, and he was trapped in it. Even if he returned, it would only be to climb again, to face the same questions, the same impossibilities. As he stood there, staring at the path below, Jian understood one thing: he might never leave this place. The mountain would claim him, as it had claimed so many before him. His fate, like theirs, would be entwined with the peaks, with time itself.
OK, so, I'm listening to this through headphones whilst mowing lawns in a stunning garden, down in cornwall, uk.
