They were MANY errors in the show " All in Family ".

      1. Archie purchases the bar / night club.
      2. Gloria and Mike moves to to California.
      3. Gloria and Mike LATER divorces.
      4. Stephanie was added to the show.
      5. Edith dies.
      6. All in the Family is renamed to " Archie Bunker Place ".

Number 4 was the worst. That character Stefanie had zero personality and did absolutely nothing for the show. Buying the bar was ok but Mike and Gloria could have stayed married and living in New York and came by the bar once in awhile and Edith dying, that was just bad. I think Jean wanted off the show to do other acting projects if I’m thinking right. But yeah you got it pretty much right.

This scene clearly illustrates why the series stank and didn't last long, Sally Struthers was fantastic in her supporting role on ":All In The Family," however, that doesn't automatically translate being able to "star" in your own spinoff example: "The Ropers." Struthers just wasn't strong enough to carry the show on her own, it could have had a chance with co-starring Rob Reiner but he likely declined if he had been offered, a wise decision. Not exactly clear what role the "great" Norman Lear had, but even tv royalty can have a turkey now and then.

Yes, a lot of supporting actors and actresses who were brilliant in their roles simply could not carry their own shows. Life happens, and sadly Archie was right about Mike. I don't think either of them would have gotten married had it been for Archie though. Even in my family we had an example of this. My Aunt married a guy like Mike (he even was Polish) family despised him and she probably wouldn't have married him had things took their course (this was back in the 70's). However she did, still is married to him and is still miserable (mom even suspects the reason the aunt hits the vodka bottle regularly is because of him). My mother married a total hick who had a violent and controlling demeanor. She managed to get divorced and has made her life go on. Sometimes people act rationally (like Gloria) and sometimes they don't (like Mike). People get afraid, they question things and they seek safety and security where they think they won't have to worry. Some people eventually change their minds, others accept the consequences thinking that's what they deserve.
