Hey folks, really appreciate all the love on my videos here, it’s such an honour to be a part of this amazing channel! This is the very first time any of my original folk songs have ever been released on such a big - and brilliant - platform, so I really hope you enjoy my wee song! I also released this song as a single on Spotify, so be sure to check that out if ya like it - links are in the description of this video!
Also a few folks have been asking about the missing string, basically, old banjo habits die hard haha, and for some of my songs I like to take the low string off and tune to open G - like a banjo! Thanks again for all the love, it really means a lot! 💚💛
Here's my shot at lyrics and chords. Capo on 4, Tuning is Open G Verse: G D C G x2 Chorus: C G D C G D G Interlude: G D C G x2 A stary crown lays, softly broken Near the branch of, a silver tree As my soul sings, sweetly stranded In the hold of your embrace Where have you gone, my king? Will you come back soon? With your hands held in the air Will you dance and sing As the sun will bring A new dawn here once more A purple dove flies, soaring swiftly Up above this lonesome place A golden river, whispers gently Softly down and away from here Where have you gone, my king? Will you come back soon? With your hands held in the air Will you dance and sing As the sun will bring A new dawn here once more In the desert, I see a ribbon Tied so loosely from a tree There’s a grave there, reading sadly That the king is buried here Where have you gone, my king? Will you come back soon? With your hands held in the air Will you dance and sing As the sun will bring A new dawn here once more
I tried open G and capo on 4 and it sounds so bad, why is this the first line of the soung with those chords doesn't work. Are the chord shapes different for that particular tuning, I'm very new at guitar but do ok with standard tuning?
@@Techumsa hey man! Indeed, playing with Open Tunings needs completely new chord shapes. But you can easily Play it in Standard Tuning with Capo on 4 and play it with the shapes you're used to. It will sound fine, just not exactly like the original
Huh interesting in many ways it was the Scottish sns scotch irish that created much of American folk and country music and this is like going back to the source
Exactly what I was thinking. Our American folk music is built on Native American, and tribal rhythms from Africa. With Scotts Irish melodies and songs mixed in there. The best music comes out of styles converging organically and honestly.Scottish Country western..?Yes please!!!
Lol yeah weirdly, everyone in America who is white like isn’t from here, and we brought our heritages and traditions and cultures with us elsewhere, then eventually it became something new. Wild lol
World - class ! Key word : "Authenicity "! This great original composition , which - like all great art - consciously leaves room for one's own interpretation ,would feature perfectly in a Coen Brothers or Wes Anderson movie !. Sensitive and beautiful performance3. Thank you so much.
Thank you so much for the work you do. It makes me so incredibly happy to see someone carrying on the work of people like Alan Lomax. It's the kind of work I wish I was able to do myself.
P.S. If y'all ever need a correspondent or liason of sorts in Central North Carolina, holler at me! I know some great local musicians from my rural town in the Uwharrie National Forest, and many other very talented folks from nearby areas. I'd trade away both my legs for you to record some of them if an opportunity to do so ever seems feasible (and perhaps even myself, I'm a musician and songwriter too (sorry for the shameless self plug lol)). I'm currently posting this without their knowledge, but I know for a fact that at least a couple of them besides myself would likely be interested. If you'd ever like to hear some modern renditions (similar to the overall vibe of a lot of music on this channel) of classic songs of North Carolina's mountains, foothills, and piedmont, mixed with songs, old and new, written by my friends and myself or otherwise passed down to us by our families, feel free to drop me a line. I may be able to get some sample videos together for you if you're interested. And please, please, PLEASE, keep doing the amazing work you do. Much love.

Great story, I hope it continues to unfold with Sam walking those Appalachian Mountains, I am certain there is a lot of history that needs to be explored and connections made with both parts of the world. Just thinking it would be good to have some of this music played in The old cattle mart building, The Mart, in East Linton, East Lothian Scotland, I think potentially a great venue for this music, I work there and live close by in Belhaven, famous for its brewery and Belhaven Best. Great music coming from you part of the world and GemOnVHS, certainly will contribute soon as I can.
Many guitarists - particularly rhythm guitarists - find that 5 strings are adequate for a less "muddy" sound. There is no set rule ! eg .Keith Richard. Thanks.

Glad I'm not the only one, I was about to seek help
I love cuckoo bird. It's a masterpiece.
First song I've ever heard from him, imma fan

That the king is buried here

Thanks for all that. Much appreciated.

Had the absolute pleasure to be in Sam’s company in a pub in Sheffield, an outstanding singer/musician and brilliant guy.

I gotta ask more so out of curiosity, who the hell are the scots Irish cause I'm pretty sure the 2 are different cultures and people

This song brings me peace
S'happenin Sam, fellow Scot here. Love that country music flavour with the accent retention, on yersel ma man!! Big love from Argyll
Super like from the Scottish Diaspora in the good old northern US. Salute to you my man.
Wonderful. I keep coming back for another listen.
Everything about this song is bliss. Calms me... Thanks Sam, beautiful music you are making.
Very handsome with a wonderful voice. This was so nice, definitely added it to my playlist. Was not expecting that excellent harmonica
Maybe its my heritage, but something about this song just hits a special chord for me
Loving the croc capo & great song Sam. Thanks for sharing
I've listened to this like 12 times in a row. Great stuff mr. shackleton

A king is coming soon ....my king....king of kings....KingJesus!!!
Well, that's another way of looking at this song. Makes it a little less sad, as King Jesus rose from the grave.
,you hope!

Great stuff. I’ll hook you up in Leeds when gigs are back on.

Stoked that this worked out and that I was able to connect you guys online! The power of Instagram haha.
Is that how it happened? I had forgotten. Thanks Ovi!
Awesome! Cukoo has been on repeat for me haha. Funny how the accent leaves when singing.
I have found the sound of my people. Sounds like I'm standing in a church pew on Sunday morning at my grandpa's church.
I love hearing this guy laugh at the end of videos 😆😂
The lyrics hit somewhere deep, can't put my finger on it. X
His guitar is only sporting 5 strings still sounds amazing
Oh man, that's a good one!
incredible
You know he’s good when you didn’t even knotice he was missin a string on that geetar the first 50 times you’ve watched it
Where is this guy from
Scotland!

this wonderful lad has become one of my GemsonVhs daily repeat
What guitar is he playing? Wow
@sam Shackleton, fookin shite ye. Catch ye in Glasgow aye?
Did he explain the missing string?
Exactly mark

I'd love to learn this song as I'm a new 60 year old guitarist but what tuning and chords are being used?
Is this recording available anywhere? I have his album but this specific recording hits different
Here a year later still loving every bit of this song
Who knew Neville Longbottom had a voice like this
can anyone make out the chords to this song?
Hey mate, look at my comment above, chords & lyrics there. Also on Ultimate Guitar!
