    Enjoying refreshing myself on the basics in 2024! Back when I had children in my home - the better part of a million years ago - it really helped to enlist their assistance. But these days I live alone, and I’m within spitting distance of 80. I receive almost all of my groceries and other purchases by delivery, and every delivery involves packaging. Each load of trash and recycling must go down three floors to the alley dumpsters, which I can keep up with until we get a spell of icy weather, or a heat wave, or… you name it. Then I’m overwhelmed, and I resort to one strategy I’ve never seen on decluttering/ cleaning sites, even yours, which is absolutely the best of all! My last resort strategy is: Ask For Help! In my case, that mostly means pay for help. Have you, like so many of us, ever had times when your strength or other resources failed you, and you had to get outside help? If so it would be very encouraging to learn about it! God bless and keep you, and Rah! Rah! Rah!

    Hi Diane, coming here from 2024! Trying to keep up m y commitment of commenting on your videos when you watch. I absolutely love your content and making my way through the baby steps this year. Taking my time and trying to make these habits part of me. I appreciate you and what you bring to us in such a digestible way.

    Dear Diane! How I wish you were my next door neighbor. Thank you, thank you. I love the "small amount of time". I always think it will take days, so don't even start. I can do anything for 2 or 5 or 15 minutes.

    Hi Diane, Andrea from 🇨🇦. I want to tell you that you have changed my life. Whilst I no longer suffer from the intense chaos and depression that I did twenty five years ago, now my problem is those around me. Some days I feel just like a household slave.
    I cannot control them and just end up doing everything myself. No matter how hard I work the place is always a mess and I have no energy and feel resentful. However, since finding you a few weeks ago I am now feeling stronger and more capable and I have even ordered my family to help clean up after supper. They are not happy about it, but I feel more empowered. Thank you so much.

    I have 2 rooms that are my “hiding zones”. The basement and the small media/reading room off the kitchen. I decided to start on the media room since it is on the main floor of our home. I decided to tackle a stack of boxes of batteries…I set timer for 10 minutes and got them all organized in 3 small plastic storage cases. I know it was supposed to be 5 but I’ve been wanted to clean these up for sometime now and 10 minutes was the perfect amount of time…a sense of accomplishment today! Thank you Diane!

    I have red the book " Sink Reflections" by Marla Cilley first time three years ago. Went through it, made my own short version - did nothing however to improve the clutter inside me and outside in the house. I have been going through various videos by the Fly Lady, or other people trying to follow the directions and, unfortunately, nothing helped. This is the first time that I can follow the philosophy of taking one step at a time, one baby step each day building a task into a habit. This is the first time I can see and understand what I am supposed to do. Thank you.

    Tonight before watching this, I was inspired by the other videos I watched today that led up to this. I came home and vacuumed up dog hair on the tile in the living area, cleared my hot spot (the coffee table), folded clean clothes on the table where I eat and hung up the clothes I wore today as well as those from this week on my grandma's rocker in my bedroom . I opted to leave clean sheets in the dryer for tomorrow. Thanks for the motivation! That rescue might have been scattered but really it was only two rooms and I feel more at peace.

    I love that you mentioned getting the kids involved. My kids are 2 and 5. I actually set a timer on the stove in the evenings and will tell the kids they have 10 minutes to pick up all their toys and put them in the toy box before we head upstairs to get ready for bed. They spend much of their day in the play area in our kitchen and living room. (They have a toy kitchen in my kitchen) I don't like getting up in the morning to find toys scattered on the floor. So, for a while now, I have been requiring the kids to pick up their own toys. Yesterday, my 2 year old wanted to watch a video, but she had a mess in the kitchen with her toy dishes. Her sister had already cleaned up what she was playing with and got in the play yard (We have a plastic play yard fence that separates our kitchen from the living room, so I can keep the toys separate) to watch the show. My two year old came running to the play yard saying, "Mommy I cleaned up my toys. Can I watch the show too?" She took that responsibility on herself and I was so proud of her.

    Really useful videos. I got knocked off track and my house plunged once more into chaos. To my utter shame my father collapsed in my disgusting dining room a few years ago. There were 2 doctors and 5 paramedics working on him. At such an awful time and feeling so desperate about my father I was so ashamed of the state of my house I'd rather have died on the floor there myself. I'm now back to flylady and said to hubby we must decorate the bedroom because if one of us were to be ill and require a doctor I again would rather just die. Extreme circumstances but I really didn't need to be thinking about such things at that time. Bedroom in stripped out, I'm dumping car loads of rubbish at the tip and bringing my home back under control. Thank you Diane. These videos are just what I need and your homes are beautiful. One day that will be me!

    Thank you so much for these videos! I did the 5 minute room rescue today and was honestly shocked by how different it looked in such a short space of time. I'd been avoiding going in that room for weeks and it had been weighing me down heavily. It seemed like an overwhelming task but I feel so much lighter now! I look forward to your encouraging words through the next steps. (^-^)

    will I eventually end up with an explicit journal with weekly home blessing, swish and swipe, zone cleaning, etc? I will understand those things as I incorporate them into the journal? The reason I am interested in Fly Lady is to help me focus on a task. I start out to do one thing, go into a particular room, see something else that needs to be done and so that I don’t forget about it, I do that right away. Well this continues from one task to the next and I’m lucky if I remember the original task at hand.

    Flylady Diane Denmark : I am really fighting my perfectionism/personality on this one! 😨 But I started my control journal. It's on my computer so I can 'fiddle' with it later (on my downtime) but for now, the routines are written, and are where I can see them and tick them as I do them.
    I've also started 2 other lists. One is a ToDo for anything important that MUST be done today. The other one is a DontForget (tomorrow) list for all those other things that I think about that normally I'd be distracted and start taking care of. I put them on the list for later so they'll not get forgotten but now I can stop thinking about them! Tomorrow if there's an urgent one, it can move to the ToDo list or just sit on the Don't Forget list until I have done my routines. I'm sure if they sit on the list long enough they'll eventually get taken up in some zone task or other anyway ... but the main thing is they're out of my head leaving me to focus on right now 😊 Maybe I'm jumping ahead ... my Don't Forget List will get covered somewhere in the plan I'm sure 😁

    I just did a 5 mins room rescue of a little bit of the big chaotic pile on the kitchen table.
    It's not something that I can be proud of as it was so little, but I am glad nevertheless:
    I wrote an reminder for my DH to take his special meds on Monday and I tossed the old reminder.
    I read a letter that was lying there, unread by me till today and I put the letter into our two-ring-binder.
    I tossed some package material and I sorted in a special plastic bag, though we have tons of it which we perhaps will use when we will move in autumn and that was it. Thanks

    Question that I am SURE you have had before: can you maybe direct me to the answer? Question is this: I am GREAT at getting rid of stuff, but USELESS at choosing homes for things that I DO need and use. I have read tons of information about prime real estate, but when it comes down to picking spots for things...I panic. I cannot do the one step with the hot spots bc I just move the stuff from one spot to the next...I move the things to a place where I use them...it seems like, maybe the best way to use the two minutes would literally be take just one thing and actually find a FINAL resting place for it rather than moving around ten things? Is that more the right direction?

    • @DianeinDenmark
      @DianeinDenmark  7 лет назад +3

      +L Bieler Yes! It's a great idea to take each item and have a quick think about where would be the best to place it. It should be handy/accessible. For example make-up, toiletries, hair products can go in the bathroom. Stationery, wrapping paper Sellotape, files, documents can all go in the area that you use as your office.

    • @TillyFloss
      @TillyFloss 4 года назад +2

      Maybe this will help? Have a think...if you were looking for this item, where would you look first? Store the item there! e.g. if you were looking for an empty jam jar and would think to look for one on the garage shelf then that's where they should be stored!

    I can’t believe I am actually doing one babystep at the time, when the only thing I want to do it’s to make a fancy control journal and getting started with my zones.. the harder thing have been to dress to shoes.. I am dressing up nice every morning (no PJS at lunch no more!), but somehow I never get to the shoes.. but this have been my week spot all my live, I will drive my mum crazy, always without shoes, even when is raining and freezing outside 😂

    LOL, you must be a Trekkie!! So am I. But I had to take a break for several years. Growing up I had Star Trek posters all over my room, and I read every single Star Trek novel. And I went to several conventions with my friend. CBS All Access has all the movies to stream, and all the TV shows, and it only costs $5.99 a month, which I think is a good deal. I'm re-watching JAG, one of my favorite shows.

    Hey Diane, thank you so much for your videos. The biggest challenge at our home has to do with out 11year old. He drops things off wherever he goes, forgets about them and this is really exhausting because I'll tell him to clean up after himself the whole day. When he makes himself a sandwich you'll find the knife somewhere, the plate somewhere else, the butter still on the counter, the cheese lying around somewhere in the kitchen. Very clever boy but always with his head in the clouds. Do you have any suggestions for us?

    • @DianeinDenmark
      @DianeinDenmark  Год назад +1

      Hi Anke! Yes, I do. Find a tupperware or cardboard box and every time you find something he has left behind, pop it in the box. Ask him to empty the box at the end of each day. He will soon start putting things in the right place! (If it's things like fresh food, as soon as you see it, ask him to come back into the kitchen and put it away.) You can also teach him the habit of checking a room every time before he leaves it to go off somewhere else. Has he left a book there, his shoes, schoolbag, etc. Just gently remind him, no nagging.

Par ailleurs, dans l'application FlyLadyPlus, ces 15 minutes sont à la fois dans la routine du matin et dans la routine de l'après-midi. Donc le but est d'arriver à 30 minutes par jour de désencombrement ? Merci pour votre aide.

    Thank your the help and encouragement. I just started the series with you (9 days ago) :-D, and have a question. I moved into my new house 2 months ago and am still in the process of unpacking boxes and organizing. How do you determine the difference between a hot spot and a 5 minute room rescue? Many of my piles are based on unpacking a box and not really having a home for the items yet. I've been differentiating the two between stuff I can clean up in 2 minutes and stuff that's going to take a bit more time. Do you have a better solution? Thanks much!

    • @DianeinDenmark
      @DianeinDenmark  7 лет назад +3

      Hi Liz! I would work on those boxes 15 minutes at a time. The 2 minute hot spot is for those areas where you tend to dump things during the day (when you walk in the door and dump the mail/keys/groceries, etc).

      Hi Mom! Add it to your morning or evening routine - make sure write it down and add it to your Control Journal. That way you can check it off.

    Thank you so much for your videos! They are extremely helpful and I am just so thankful for you. You are truly a blessing. I do have a question, though... how often do we do a 5 minute room rescue?

    • @DianeinDenmark
      @DianeinDenmark  5 лет назад +1

      We usually do one in the living room before we start prepping dinner and at the end of the day before we all head to bed. You can do them as often as you want! For example, if you are at home with kids, you might want to do one before lunch in the living room, or do one in the kids' room before they get ready for bed 😃

    • @mrs.young-roms6gc681
      @mrs.young-roms6gc681 5 лет назад +1

      Oh!!! Okay, so it’s not technically decluttering, it’s more like straightening up a room really quickly. Thanks!

    • @DianeinDenmark
      @DianeinDenmark  5 лет назад +2

      You can also use it to declutter a room you've been avoiding...go in there, grab several items and deal with them in 5 minutes 😃 Repeat whenever you can!

    When making this Control Journal (I've been taking notes) - I noticed that we skipped taking 5-15 minutes for silence/reflection/meditation/time for ourselves in these morning and evening routines. I am wondering if that is because this falls into the afternoon routine that we haven't gotten to yet or if it was an oversight??

      It's in #10 (next video): after we declutter for 15 minutes we take a break for 15 minutes. Nicole

    What are thoughts on having a blank colored page(I have it in a clear paper protector) for the first page in the binder? I was thinking about using it for having a little list of "Must Do's" . Example: make dentist appointment, wash husbands clothes ( I was his separate because of my laundry problem and want to make sure he has clean clothes for work, not nearly as bad as what it was).
    *your thoughts...?

    I have a question: A few days ago one of the steps was setting a timer and taking 5 minutes (or 15 minutes) for yourself. I enjoyed a moment of complete solitude in the backyard that evening, watching the birds; it was lovely. Is that (setting the time for some rest/pamper time) something I should do every day, or only as needed, like with the 5 minute room rescue? Not that I wouldn't mind taking 5 minutes a day for myself! I just wasn't sure if it would be written in the routines, or if I should make sure I fit it in somewhere each day, or if I should just do it on the days I feel like I need it.

    Hej Diane
    Håber det er ok at skrive på dansk 🤔 Jeg er glad for at have fundet din kanal, jeg prøvede for et par år siden at finde rundt på flylady hjemmeside, men opgav, dine videoer giver mening 👍
    Jeg har 3 områder hvor det er svært at rydde op/smide ud:
    1. Lysestager (Har rigtig mange, og det er jo nok typisk dansk = hygge)
    2. Vaser
    3. Urtepotter
    Jeg har MEGA mange af alle 3 dele og har så svært ved at skille mig af med dem..., har du nogle gode dertil? 🤞
    Kh. Lone

      Har Du samlet dem allesammen et sted? Så kan du måske lige starte med at fjerne 10 af hvert, som du ikke er særlig glad for. Genbrugsbutikken kan godt bruge dem her og nu, hvor folk vil gerne have nyt til Påske. Eller give dem videre til familie/venner, med en lille blomst eller påskeæg i? Jeg har netop afleveret en kasse med små urtepotter til en veninde der laver blomsterdekorationer. God arbejdslyst! 😃🌷 Skriv med en tilbagemelding! 👋

    What would you suggest if you have multiple "hot spots?" 2 min per spot? The end of my counter and my kitchen island both tend to collect stuff. Try to condense it to one hot spot?

      Diane in Denmark thank you very much for your help:) I've been trying hard to keep up with the routines. What I've been consistent with is keeping the sink clear and dressing to shoes. I find it hard to make the bed in the morning as I'm always rushed by someone else's to leave the house but I make it everyday just not in the morning but when I come back. I'll wake up earlier :)
