In this video, I take a look at the Zeiss 135mm F2.8 Batis lens for the Sony E-mount system. Designed for use with Sony's full frame cameras like the A7RM2 and A9. It can also be used with APSC cameras like the a6000 series with an equivalent focal length of 202.5mm. This is the fourth lens in the Batis lineup joining the 18mm F2.8, 25mm F2 and 85mm F1.8 and is the first 135mm focal length lens to be available in the FE mount that features autofocus.

Dude bloopers were hilarious. Mine are the exact same way
Haha its not easy isn't it?! XD
All Batis lens are amazing. i am waiting for the 55mm batis
Thanks john
Dear John
Please come back. We miss your videos
Great review John! As always ;)
Hey John, I only watch your vids for the bloopers now. Lol
Haha I'll make sure I add them in my other review videos to get you to keep watching then! =.P
Great job John! I like to see a comparison between this lens and a G master 70-200mm f2.8 at 135mm. Images from this lens would have to be spectacular for one to buy instead of the 70-200mm f2.8. This may be the sort of lens one rents and not necessarily owns
The Batis 135mm would be a lot better than the 70-200mm GM at 135mm. I would say its a no contest really but because of the F2.8 aperture on the 135mm, its a fairly niche lens and it is more of a numbers game with the Zeiss lens. So I would agree with you that its the type of lens people may rent more than buy.
Great review! Best source of education for Sony lenses. Will stick to the Zeiss A mount 135 and LAEA4 if I ever make the switch to E mount 🖒
Haha thank you! Yep. Thats a beautiful lens. Curious to see what Sony brings with their 135mm lens.
We need Sigma to jump into the premium E-mount market and bring Zeiss and Sony back to Earth on the pricing.
Haha agreed! They need to do it ASAP!
I am very suspect of Sony who own 40% of Tamron and I believe they are intentionally preventing competition of their e-mount glass
Unless Batis are actually manufactured in Tamron factories and marketed as Zeiss optics.
Fingers crossed this February 🤞🏻🤞🏻
Hey JS, What are the advantages of using the 135mm over a 50mm or an 85mm. In other words, "all things being even" which of the three would you take to do portraits in the park? I have the 50 f 1.8 and the 90mm f2.8 macro, I want to borrow either the Sony 85mm f1.4GM or the Zeiss 135mm. Thanks in advance.
Great job John; thanks
You're welcome :)
Good review sison . BTW do somemore reviews on A MOUNT lenses . thank you 👍
Are there any A-mount lenses that you want me to do?
if you could do review on 16mm f2.8 fisheye lens (or)Vario-Sonnar T* 24-70 mm F2.8 ZA SSM II thanks for the reply sison.
I come here for the BTS :D. Love them. Keep up the good work :)
Haha thank you! XD
Another excellent review John on a native E-mount focal length that a lot of us have been waiting for. I have to agree with the comments from Stefan, however, that the price and pedestrian f/2.8 performance of this lens will prevent it from joining my other Batis optics as well. I'll wait to see what Sony introduces in the future for a 135mm and hope that it's not as monstrous in size/weight as other GM offerings.
Looking back at the Loxia and Batis introductions the previous two years, it almost appears that Sony is granting licensing agreements to Zeiss to introduce new optics with the full E-mount EXIF and AF interface at specs just under what they come out with months later. One optimized for size (Zeiss), the other for performance (Sony). Very incestuous business where they compete and collaborate in the same market.
Hey Mate! Loved your video but wanted to ask for a word of advice. I've been looking around to find a new camera (first one to start my RUclips channel). My two options are the sony hx90 ( $420)and the canon 700d ($384) both brand new for that price. What do you think?
Thank you! o0o the 700D looks like a good option because it has the mic input for better sound quality which would be my main reason for going with that over the HX90. Although, the HX90 is more compact >.< If the 700D comes with a lens, I'd go with the Canon.
3:01 - dog's butt? Such an unique passion in art!
That price is just plain rude. I've got the 85mm which is nice but pretty bloody expensive and this is on another level.
Think I'll wait to see what Sony has coming.
Is there any reason other than the fancy OLED screen to buy this lens if the photographer already own a 70-200 f/2.8 GM?
I have all the Batises so far, but I will skip on the 135. It is too expensive for a f2.8 lens. It is pity, because I was super optimistic and waited for so long for this 135.. If only they have made it f2... Even at the cost of 100 gr more (then it would be the same as the canon's 135L ~700-720 gr). I will wait to see the GM or G from Sony - it will be announced eventually and I think - sooner rather than later now that the wide angles are out of the way.
Stefan Totev . I think their reason for f2.8 is to make small than the Sony. Yep I got disappointed too, I wanted it at least f/2.
How long before you get your hands on the a9?
I've played around with it already. A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!!
Looking forward to the video. I've had mine nearly two weeks and i'm in love already.
Nice review as always John! But yes it's way too expensive here in Australia.
f2.8 is indeed off-putting....I rather have a 135L + adapter.
In a separate note do you buy all these lenses yourself or....?
Thank you! Its way too expensive! I don't buy all the lenses myself. I have a close group of friends that I may borrow things off every now and then which make it easier.
A good but costly lens it seems! Thanks for the review John :)
You're welcome :)
How about some A-mount reviews? Let's not forget the the A-mount shooters.
Is there an A-mount lens you want me to do a video on?
John Sison well, I own the following lenses Sony Carl Zeiss lenses: 24mm2.0, 50mm1.4, 85mm1.4 and 16x35mm2.8. I own the 70x200mm2.8 SSMII G series. I use the first a99 that came out with these lenses. So reviews you do regarding the aforementioned equipment I as well as others that are A-mount shooters will appreciate. Maybe try testing A-mount lenses on the A-9 or A-7 mirrorless models... Thanks check my IG to see my work with this equipment @bobbyfingers
I'll see what I can do! :)
Soo not recommended for video? Just cant figure out whitch lens to buy... this or sony 70-200 f2.8
compared with 85 1.4GM, which one is better?
I haven't compared both of them one on one but if anything, I'd say the Zeiss would be optically better.
This lens use oled glass right?
yes, it's oled just like the other Batis lenses...
Absurd price. I will take the Sigma 135mm 1.8 with adapter any day.
Hoping Sony comes out with a monster lens to show Zeiss their prices are beyond ridiculous. Should have been much closer to the $1000 mark.
I'm keen to see what their 135mm will be like. I have high hopes for that lens.
milvus or batis or sigma or Samyang for lord of the 135s????
At the moment, I would go for the Batis.
Canon 135 F2 L with Metabones 4
If I may suggest to make a new comparison between this Batis 135mm f2.8 and Sony 135mm f1.8 GM, but please put more examples of photos, rather than you talk a lot with minimal examples.
The 2.8/135 (Batis) Apo Sonnar T* has LESS VIGNETTING than ANY other ZEISS lenses including the Otus 1.4/100 @ 2.8 and definitely less than the 2/135 (Milvus) Apo Sonnar T* As a matter of fact, I cannot think of a single Canon, Nikon, Tamron or Sigma 135 or Zoom covering the 135mm focal length with less vignet. It's about 10% at the edges which is about as good as it gets. This is really an F2.4 glass column with an F2.8 aperture.
--
The 14 elements / 11 groups design is similar to the 1.4/100 (Otus) Apo Sonnar T* -- which is also 14 elements / 11 groups -- sans the aspherical rear element. Sharp and contrasty edge to edge with zero lateral or longitudinal chromatic aberrations. Very little pin cushion; about as little as you'll find in a 135. It's just not very fast or particualry compact for its speed.
Very true and good points about this lens! I'm not sure about you but luckily this lens has come down in price just a little to make it better value but its hard to pass up on the excellent 135mm GM these days.
seems the control is cumbersome..
it was sharp "even wide open" :D
The rubber focus ring looks poorly made compared to the 85 batis
I've got both.... they look and feel the same to me....
This lens is a bit of a hard sell considering that the Sigma 135mm f1.8 cost less and is over a stop faster and the Sony 70-200mm f2.8 is just as good at 135mm but gives you much more versatility.
I guess this lens is smaller than either of those but it's no better in terms of image quality (all three have amazing image quality).
Myrmidon better micro contrast on the zeiss, less chromatic aberration as well. Plus the autofocus is way better overall
