    An indicator of calcium/calcium carbonate can be found by making ice from unfiltered tap water in your freezer. Put a few cubes in a clear glass, and let the ice melt. Then stir it up. If you see white particles floating in the water, that'll be calcium carbonate. The effect is like a snow globe using London tap water!

    Great video, I just saw the API test kit at the store has doubled in price since I bought it a year ago. Definitely will use these hacks when I run out of the test kit

      It helps to check with the API tests or some sort of test strip while you learn to get the hang of it...but once you start getting good at reading the Ecology! You wont need the kits anymore

    I have been on a water perimeter marathon on your channel. I have a question. When I am testing my water with test kits, what are the ideal perimeters? All I have figured out is that nitrates should never be higher than 40ppm for thriving fish. I also have a pH of 8 in my area. I have added Indian almond leaves and there is wood that is supposed to act a lot like the leafs, but I cannot remember the name. Regardless, in five months with three aquariums, I have not seen the pH go down. Do you think that's a big deal? I have bettas, ghost shrimp, all kinds of plants and snails. What should the nitrites and ammonia be kept at? You also mentioned something about ammonium? If I understand correctly, it's not something I will deal with, with my high pH? Or is it? If so, is there a test for that one? I know this is a ton of questions, but I'm overwhelmed with all the information and decided I would just ask. I have been trying to remember to go through your channel to use the Amazon links for my shopping to help you out. I really do appreciate all your videos!

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  6 месяцев назад +1

      The fact that you care at all... means your tank is likely very nice compared to most. For an Amazonian type waterway you would ideally want to see 4 to 10 kh and gh, a ph between 6.0 and 7.4 , temp 76-84f a TDS of 50- 250 ppm
      No ammonia. No nitrites and 0 to 60ppm nitrates with plants enjoying 20 to 50 ppm nitrates. Without plants, its ideal to just have 0 nitrates, nitrites or ammonia ...meaning your biological filtration is 100% effective at transforming your biological waste.
      Cheers!

      Thank you so much for the speedy reply. We are just getting over a sickness that kicked our rears, so I'm a little slow on my end. 🥴
      My pH is naturally at 8.0 in my area. I have added different things that are supposed to lower it naturally, but I do not see it budge. Do you think it's OK to just let it be as long as it never climbs? How often should a person check for pH? Does that really change much?

    hopefully, 0.05ppm ammonia is actually a chemical test kit which shows light green indicate 0.05ppm ... Nextly I have anubias, hornswort , javafern, Marimo Moss balls and frog bit... Are these plants effective in eating nitrates and Ammonia

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  3 месяца назад +1

      .05 is probably an error. I'd say that's okay. Or you have some super accurate measuring gear. If it's .5 I'd get it below .25 though. That's about what most planted tanks run on to do the nitrogen cycle and not sicken fish
