The idea behind the video and arrangement was to represent a character/plot point with each electric guitar. In total there are 7 guitars (5 electric, 1 acoustic and 1 bass) and each is tuned differently: - Viper FM/Red (Aerith): E standard - X500 Menace/Black (Sephiroth): D standard - SC Custom/Black and Gold (Cloud): Drop C# - MH 417 (Black Materia): 7 String Drop A - R-458MN Multiscale (White Materia): 8 String Standard Since I was so behind schedule i decided to go big and do almost every lead I could hear on guitar. This project was very close to being canned multiple times... but I could hear his voice every night, "I'm waiting, Clown"... The lead changes from guitar to guitar according to the song. In Aerith's Sacrifice, Aerith's guitar is the main lead while Cloud supports with the harmony work. Then, as the JENOVA motif kicks in, the lead changes to Cloud, and then, on the main JENOVA theme, Sephiroth takes the lead and Cloud is the support guitar. The idea was to give Sephiroth the ability to use the tremolo/whammy bar and to gove Cloud the access to it only on the JENOVA theme, as a representation of Cloud and Sephiroth skills being tied together by being SOLDIERS. I wanted to represent each character in technique as well, limiting myself to using only certain techniques for each but it was too confusing (that's why sometime you see me just up-picking for some leads). I tried to make different variations for the main JENOVA melody (duun dun duuun, dun-dun-duun duun DUUUN ʕ•̀ ω •́ʔ) for every different time it's featured. It's played by both Sephtiroth and Cloud and makes use of the whammy bar, since its the "technique" that is shared by both guitars. Of course on the background the White and Black Materia are somewhat battling, presented as opposites of the same coin. Since we don't know how the plot will develop I just used them as rhythm counterparts. The idea behind the tunnings was to give each character a different range and harmonic capabilities. A lot of the melodies, leads and riffs can only be played only on their specific guitar. And about me, I wanted to present myself as Black and White as well, with 2 different outfits. However I don't have a fully white one so I went with a mix of Black and White and Silver and Black, trying to emulate a Kadaj/Yazoo look (although I'm not as cute/good looking as those 2). For a moment I thought about ordering an Advent Children cosplay, hahah. Also that ash colored wig gave me so much trouble, that's why you see it styled very differently on some of the takes. The whole thing took 7 different days to shoot, plus one day of extra shooting for missing scenes. The vocals are a bit mushy, I don't like putting them on front since it's not my forte and also the range is a bit outside my comfortable zone. Personally I think it adds enough to the cover so I kept them there.
the whole process sounds so painful (especially as a birthday gift)! Massive respect for your 8-day effort!! Incorporating each character with a guitar seems hard, but it kept escalating as I kept reading!
The whole story behind this song is amazing, as is the song itself is.Yo'u're an incredibly talented musician for going all the extra effort to put the feelings of the characters into it! Ontop of trying to dress different for them and going through so many guitars!!

What tips would you recommend for someone new trying out guitar without any experience with music? Still stuck in the early stages and trying to find fun things to practice.
ooh Jfiggy, that's a good question ! It's always good to start with things that you want to play, even if its just the core, basic melody. It's good to start with chords and progress from there... Maybe I'll answer this more in depth on a Q&A !

Did you need to upgrade the harley benton guitars at all to make them sound and play well?
not at all ! Both sound pretty nice as they are, however I'm thinking of changing the pickups on the SC and upgrading the 8-string someday
