The spring loaded mechanism is extremely smart as a deterrent to thieves. Maybe a really strong spring & lock Your design isn't over the top It's simple & very clean
I have been searching for something like this for a long while. I have only seen about 3 but none as good as this set up. I will be making one like yours. Thank you Barry.
I spent about 60 K too much and it costs me a fortune to drive to limited camp grounds; you have it figured out , the natural way-camping should be, great work!
This is the concept I've been brainstorming. I'd like it big enough to put a tent you can stand up in. Thanks for sharing. You've given me a starting point.
I'm contemplating building a box similar to this to fit in the bed of my pickup truck. Then setup the tent on top. Pack it with supplies until we get to the campsite.
I was just thinking about building something like this for my son who likes camping and has a small car, he can actually get his bike and kayak on top of trailer, great family project👍🏼
While I've been kicking this around for my 54" x 10' all-aluminum utility trailer, you've actually gone and done it. Nice to see your approach, which has some minor variations from my sketch-up. The tent I've selected is only a solo that fits in the "footprint" of the trailer, and the OEM side/front stake panels are removable, as the top will be as I need to use the trailer for other duties besides a camper set-up. Thanks for the run-through of your design.
I really like this video because I got this idea for my old boat trailer. I decided to see if I could find anyone else that had the same idea and I found you. I have a couple other ideas but hopefully I can send you at least some pictures if I pull it off. I have a 16' pull behind but I am just wanting something a little more compact.
So I've been tent camping but trying to figure out what I want to do long term. Wife hates camping so I'm not going to invest in a bigger style camper, besides, that's not my idea of camping lol. Thought about building a smaller teardrop like camper, but I want to bring my fishing kayak which is also on a trailer, then I saw the rooftop tents and thought I could mount one above my kayak trailer... But the price, ugh, so then I thought why not put some plywood up and use a regular tent, even have a piece fold out to extend the surface. So I do a Google search and BOOM your video shows up basically doing what you did haha. Thanks for some great ideas!
@@RandomButtonPusher well i ended up biting the bullet and bought a rooftop tent. i found a soft top that setups like a hard top, very fast. mounted it on my small trailer. lady week i bought a 5x10 trailer and moving everything over to it to have more storage. heading off on a 14 day camping trip cross country hitting a few national parks and other sites. be a nice maiden voyage.
Nice build. My original plan was like yours but then I ended making a rack that slides up n down to any height using square tubing with holes up n down all 4 side. Now I’m fixing to up grade tent from smittyB 2 person and 4x6 to a smitty B xl and 6x12 trailer and and it will open on top of the trailer and keep everything on the trailer and have room under tent to sit chairs and tent annex:
This is a super sweet trailer. I saw it on a previous video and would have sworn it was a commercial manufactured model! I especially like that it looks secure enough to leave it at a campsite. I’ve had to be selective when choosing a camp for my Jumping Jack, for security purposes. The Jumping Jack sleeps four, but I’m gonna build one like yours for when I travel alone. Awesome, yet simple design! Kudos.
I wanna do this with a pop-up camper frame: * Do an axle flip to eliminate the wheel wells & give you a flat surface to start with. * Build some sidewalls on hinges that fold down, and you approximately have a 10' x 10' platform to setup your tent on. * Expand his idea of table space in the back, by making the entire back wall fixed, with a fold-up countertop. The back of the trailer is now your cooking area that holds your chuck box & stove. * When the sidewalls are up, you've got an enclosed box for tons of storage for your coolers, stove, tent, camping chairs, tarps, and mountain bikes. * Your propane tank mount is already built into the popup frame. * Build a water-tight box somewhere to keep a deep cycle battery, and you've got usable power for your trip. * You could even build a set of mounts for tarp poles for a canopy. The possibilities are endless! You basically eliminate all the cheap, rushed, and shoddy installation work done by the pop-up manufactures, and keep all the benefits of being above ground. Plus, your overall gear load is lighter. It's MUCH less work setting up a tent on top of that than setting up a pop-up, and you get the same effect: Tent camping off the ground!
Good job. Get's ya off the ground without being to high in the air. You can store stuff, and you can see out your back window just to name a few advantages. Not sure about a strong wind but I guess that's what tie downs are for.
@@barrysoutthere i got a runaway slice and love it. It was like 4 grand. If i had on like yours i might could pull it with my motorcycle. I cant pull the runaway. That was my plan but it was too heavy/dangerouse.
This is exactly what I had envisioned, only larger than my needs. I am trying to design one to pull behind a motorcycle. Total weight, loaded, cannot exceed 250 lbs. I have no idea if it can be done.
Wonderful design! Have yet to see anything that comes close! Just wondering whether the air matresses mentioned “bottom out” or stay firm, and what your experience is with them puncturing. Thanks in advance!
You have to adjust air in mattress for weight if people on it to keep from bottoming out. Comes with a puncture repair kit. Haven't had to use it yet .
You have taken a rough idea floating around in my head for months and turned it into a reality. What a great design. Hey Barry, one question though. What did you do to keep things inside the trailer dry in rain?
Great video. Can't stop watching it. I'm wondering if the sides would be to high if they were 24 inches. Where did you get the propane holder? I wish I could see better how you propped the top or lid up. Thanks and happy camping.
The propane "rack" was a commercial hand-me-down from an HVAC guy. It's steel, and very heavy. The top props open with an aluminum pole on each side, mounted to the angle iron. Thanks for watching !
@@barrysoutthere on the ground it has the opportunity to sink into the ground, also you can dig a small trench around the edge of your tent. Very nice idea.

It's perfect!
Well done

Hey Barry, I made a trailer somewhat like yours. I added solar panels. I am going to make them removeable. Check it out on campers choice.
I like the concept. But access to the “hold,” seems limited when the tent is up
I suppose side hatches with drawers could be added. I have lifted the top with tent on it.
Really cool, anyway to access the storage without removing the tent?
You can lift it with tent on it. Not too heavy. As long as it's unhooked from the side wing.

I am curious about how much did this cost or would cost?
Probably around $600 (plus the trailer)
How much in materials you think expand on that little trailer
Plywood : $60. Metal parts: $100. Paint: $20.
@@barrysoutthere thank you appreciate it
Great idea!! How do you support the main platform? Does it just rest on top of the 3/4" ply walls?
thanks!
Yes . And the "shelves/dividers" that store inside.
just one question can your design be pulled with a 650 cc motorcycle?
Probably not. Too heavy
@@mckees2 probably around less than 1000lb. Barely compresses the leaf springs.
When it rains would not the water flow under the trailer because the platform is wider then the trailer?
Under the trailer or under the tent ? Yes, it would get wet, just like on the ground. Tent with a good waterproof base helps.
@@barrysoutthere on the ground it has the opportunity to sink into the ground, also you can dig a small trench around the edge of your tent. Very nice idea.
Priced that mattress at $299; ouch.
Worth every penny
Is the tent in place? Or just set on the platform?
Attached ( when in use) with bungees to trailer
Never use anything less than 15 inch tires....
OK
B Z, that’s right. Easier on the axle/bearings for long distance hauling.
I'd like to know why RUclips only lets me watch the first 55 seconds of this. 😡
