  • The Polaris Choir, part of the Choirs for Change (ChoirsForChange.ca), performed on May 9th 2019 on the convention stage of NSGEU's triennial provincial convention at the Halifax Convention Centre as part of the programming of the 10th Annual Mayworks Halifax Festival of Working People & the Arts (MayworksHalifax.ca).
Their musical program for the evening was ordered in an historical timeline, looking at music that speaks to social change movements that have effected Nova Scotia and our region.
They began with the famous labour rights song "Bread and Roses", then a choral arrangement of John Lennon's "Imagine" to represent movements for peace and ecology, followed by a contemporary choral piece called "The Sounding Sea" (which invokes imagery of the sea and its power).
On the theme of Queer/LGBTQ+ rights, they performed a song called "Pulse", which is a commentary on the tragic shooting in the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando which targeted queer folks.
A choral performance of MILCK's song "Quiet" spoke to the #MeToo movement, and Polaris followed this by looking at immigrant and refugee rights with two songs, "Voices of Pier 21" and "I Have No Time To Hate".
As an homage to the climate justice movement, Polaris performed "Earth Song", and then closed out their evening concert with a fabulous rendition of "The Internationale" (as is appropriate for such a labour setting).
