So important to share this with all students in these exchange programs. Without open communication and sharing feelings, there is much contention, misunderstanding, secrecy and even emotional pain. I had a host student who communicated as though he was a communication minimalist and it was going out of style to speak and listen. Sometimes it's cultural too, but the student chose to be in the situation and needs to know how important it is to speak clearly and ask questions and how to conduct a normal back and forth communication in either language. I hope this video reaches many students who wish to be in the exchange business and for host families that think communication is a natural given in other countries...it's not. We also have a newer generation of kids who are better equipped to communicate on devices rather than face to face. All of this should be considered.
As a former host parent I have to say Excellent Advice!
