Born in Calgary in 1929, Norman Kwong’s family ran a grocery store located in the historic Bridgeland-Riverside community. Kwong started his professional football career one year after the end of the Chinese Exclusion Act, when Chinese Canadians were granted the right to vote in federal elections.
Kwong was the first CFL player of Chinese heritage, playing first for Calgary and then for Edmonton. During the 43rd Grey Cup, he helped defeat Montreal 34-19. After his football career he was part-owner of the Calgary Flames hockey team, and he would become lieutenant-governor of Alberta in 2005.

So many barriers faced and conquered: racism, parental expectations, childhood anxiety, peer acceptance, and the quest for joy. Perseverance and dignity personified. Incredible story and piece of Canadian history. Kudos Historica Canada!
Long overdue. Great to see Normie Kwong be honoured this way. A man of character & dignity.
A big thanks to the Alberta corner store for letting them film there❤
Great story! So many Chinese Canadian parents have issues with athletics that don’t fit their ideal. I get why football might be a no-no for them, but to limit kids to things like swimming, tennis, skating and perhaps, these days, pickleball, doesn’t allow them to show their full potential.
As long as you work hard, the sky is the limit! Inspiring outcome!
Very heartwarming and inspiring!❤
A feel good story. Good on ya!
Oh wow! I’m always fascinated with whoever you decide to feature on new Heritage Minutes!!
This is so inspirational!
Historica Canada, can you do a Heritage Minute about Sam Panopoulos from Chatham, Ontario and his invention of Pineapple Pizza? 😋🍕🍍
Thank you for your suggestion. It has been passed on to the relevant team. In the meantime, here is an article about Sam Panopolous.. www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/sam-panopolous
