40 years ago I was living a totally stressed out life in a house FULL of clutter, overwhelmed working full time, studying part time, with 2 children and a workaholic husband. I was ALWAYS tired! I eventually sussed giving myself gentle mornings by going to bed earlier, but until I found Clutterbug 2 years ago, I never got my mess-induced stress sorted. Now you’ve introduced me to Amy Landino! Even at 81 I’m inspired! How I wish I had someone like you two, back when I was struggling so badly, feeling like a failure at everything. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Yay for me! I already have 2 out of 3 buckets as habits. For movement I shuffle around in my robe and slippers to care for our dog and cat while I make myself a pot of pour over coffee, not a Keurig or a Mr Coffee with a timer but pour over from heating a kettle of water. For mindfulness my dog and I listen to RUclips jazz channels while I write out the chores and possibilities for my day. I hope my practice inspires someone else. ❤

Years ago I would get up in the morning to cook a good breakfast for my husband and daughter. They would argue with each other and make the morning just awful. I got angry and decided I would no longer put myself through their mess. I stayed in bed and let them do their morning. It was amazing, they got along with each other, peaceful mornings and I loved it! So I continued to stay in bed in the morning for years. Yep, then I liked mornings!! 😊

My best morning routine finally began when my youngest child (introverted night owl) needed me (extroverted morning lark) to stay out of their way and I started a mindfulness practice in my living room chair.

Long time Amy follower, but I must add this one bit to her suggested morning routine starts the night before, clock in your sleep time. Something that some of us on this channel can probably relate to, but as lovely as she is I doubt Amy is experiencing yet. Perimenopause. There. I said it. The harsh experience for a lot of women of a certain age is that sleep unfortunately is no longer a simple math equation go to bed at 11, get up at 7, boom there's your 8 hours. Or in bed by 9, get up at 5 lol. Unbroken sleep is now the dream my friends. Some of us end up awake for hours in the middle of the night no matter what time we go to bed (i.e., crash out at 6pm in our clothes because we laid down for a meditation and woke at 10pm unable to go back to sleep for hours. Or In bed by 9, go us... but lying wide awake and not tired even without Netflix lol. Or stay up longer trying to get tired enough to not wake up in the night, finally get to sleep and your teenager/young adult child wakes you at 2am with their cackling at whatever show they're watching and the walls are paper thin...then ur stuck awake for hours and wake up like a zombie... not that I've had personal experience with this). Just sayin.'

I slept too little (6 to 7 hours ) for as long as I could remember until I red the book ‘why we sleep’ from Walker. I decided to sleep one week for 8 hours (8,5 hours in bed) and I truly felt like a different person. Soooo much better, much more energy, not sleepy anymore in the afternoon and my mood is also way better. Definitely try it yourself. And if you still doubt why, read that book I red 😊

  • @kj1443

Definitely something to try and tweak into my routine.
This can all feel far removed from my reality. I leave for work at 7am. To do anything other than stretch, shower, dress and have some breakfast would mean being up at 5. Which is hard when I've been up working until midnight.
Wish me luck as I try to change my routines for the better ❤

I used to be a "hit the snooze" type. Then I realized I wasted a half an hour of good sound sleep during the "hit the snooze again" time.
If I'm going to get out of bed with just enough time to get ready and go, why not stay asleep in good sleep, prolong that as long as possible, then get my feet on the floor within 1 minute of my alarm going off.
I love it, and now couldn't see myself ever wasting that precious sleep time again.

Cas, I've recently found your channel when looking for motivation for the massive decluttering I need to do. I am a night owl just like you, forced to wake up early by a world run by freaking early birds, and Amy is right! You need sleep! What worked for me, for sleep? An early nighttime routine, and managing my light exposure. I send my child (12yo) to bed at 8:30, and I get ready for bed at the same time. By 9 PM I get into bed and turn off all the lights, then read or watch RUclips until I get sleepy, hopefully by 10:30-11. Yes, I read on a screen, dimmed as much as possible, and held at arm's length because of my aging eyesight --- and it's fine. I still get to sleep regularly at a decent hour. (And BTW, I have tried every possible supplement, and none of them work for more than a few days. Melatonin makes me irritable and depressed, and waking up in the middle of the night. Only enforcing a routine and managing light exposure has truly helped.)
If I want to get to bed early, I can't do anything stimulating after dinner. No thinking or talking about anything upsetting, no watching an exciting movie or show, or reading any exciting books. I cannot even fold laundry and put it away. I need hours to relax and wind down both physically and mentally if I want to get to sleep by 11 and get up by 6:30 (7-7.5 hours of sleep seems optimal for me).
It's also REALLY IMPORTANT to get early morning sunlight (even if it's cloudy outside) into your retinas before 9 AM to reset your clock to an earlier time. See Dr Seheult's MedCram videos on RUclips about how this works; it's so motivating! Going out for an early (i.e., before 9 AM) 15-minute walk is super beneficial! Also, avoid overhead light after sunset. If you have LED bulbs, be sure to get low color temperature ones (because they filter out the blue light better), put them on dimmers, and don't use overhead lights. Blue light above our heads shining onto a spot in our lower retinas is a signal to our brains to be awake and active. A lot of LED bulbs have way more blue light and way less red than the incandescent bulbs we used to have. If you are a night owl struggling to live in a early-bird world, this light stuff really matters a lot!
Like you, I love to relax and read or watch something until late in the night, rather than go to sleep. Partly it's our natural inborn circadian rhythm, of when we feel good, and partly I believe it's because it's the only time I have to myself that I can't be doing some other work (e.g., laundry) because it would make too much noise for my sleeping family, so I can read whatever I want or entertain myself without guilt. We NEED that down time for ourselves, and that late evening time is the only time we don't feel we could/should be doing some other chore.
Finally, now that I'm older, I also realize that I DO NOT need to do something like a fancy elaborate morning routine that doesn't suit ME or my own needs. I've tried journaling, and I don't feel any great benefit. I have no great desire to do it. I no longer force myself to try to do it just because other people elevate it to some superior status. Same with meditation. I tried meditation many different times, never felt any benefit at all. Recently, I've learned that there is research showing some people get depression or worsen their depression (and other negative outcomes) with meditation. I bet that's me! Find what truly IS good for you, and don't worry about what isn't.

Energy management!!! Great way for me to think about that because energy is what fuels everything I need to do! Thank you!
Also, when my 3 very active, school, and sports involved sons were growing up, they often struggled with waking up in the morning (just like their momma), the rule was: go to bed earlier that night. Not as punishment for making everyone else late, but as self care!
Now as grown men, they all 3 go to bed early since their jobs require an early start time. ❤️

Pay attention to your natural sleep cycles. My sleep cycles last 3-4 hours. If I wake up at 7:30 & go back to bed, I will sleep until 11:30 am.
There earlier I get to bed, I can sleep four hours, pee, & sleep four or five more hours.
The most important thing for me is to complete the sleep cycles. If I complete a sleep cycle, I might get by with seven or seven & a half hours.
If my sleep cycle gets interrupted, I’m a wreck the rest of the day.
When I was young & had to use an alarm, I was always tired.

Wonder if you could just put yourself to bed with instructions to ten yr old, "I don't want to see you or hear you." Aka she's quiet, maybe she's reading in bed until she sleeps. But natural consequences will effect her too (tiredness).

The “I suck at self-care” is part of your identity. It is a learned behavior, a role most likely played out from childhood. Guessing you took care of people in your childhood, like mom and or dad, or siblings. Like you were the emotional well from which other people drew and you still don’t know how to care for you because- that’s not your role. ❤

Something that occurred to me earlier in the year (2024), was that just as zoos and aquariums hide their charge's food, and call it 'enrichment'; then things that we find frustrating, could actually be perceived as 'enrichment'. And given how much more complex our brains are compared to other animals', then our enrichment things would need to be a lot more frustrating, to really exercise our brain.

???? Question about Mastery: if I start doing something that I’m passionate about or that excites me, I will, 100%, want “just 5 more minutes” of that activity which turns into 20 which turns into late to work. Setting a timer does not work because I will turn it off and ignore it and keep doing whatever I’m doing despite knowing I am now running late. Is there any detriment to skipping that part? Or a substitute?
