    One of my favorite DC runs. James Robinson's love for the history of DC really shows through later in the series. But I agree, the first few issues are a little rough around the edges.

    To be fair, the 0 issue made sense at the time. There was a whole 0 issue month that was well publicized. You can't really design your monthly magazine business based on how it might look nearly 30 years later.

    Starman is my favorite of the “arty” superhero books from this era (like Sandman or Animal) it tells a good story but keeps it’s aims simple so it isn’t some huge universe and everything in it spanning adventure like Starman. You also get some really cool page layouts starting about 7 or so issues in with art deco type flourishes. Has a bit of JH Williams III feel at points where a lot of the gutter and panel boarders are designed.

      Was this the comment the critiqued the video earlier in the day? Because I thought some of those points were valid (if worded a bit strongly).

    Starman was an effort to bridge the gap between DC and vertigo’s offerings at the time. It’s certainly overwritten and can feel like a novel that’s been retrofitted into a comic, but I think it gets good and wrangles dc history into its own interesting lore.

    Currently reading the compendium and loving it. This is very much a product of its time. Really wish we could have had a live action adaption back then, cause I don’t think modern hollywood and CGI fests would do this justice

    Yeah...this started out pretty hard but eventually, Tony Harris came into his own! James Robinson built Jack Knight as a reluctant hero who always remained reluctant. Eventually, by the end of this book, not only was it a well crafted book, but also became a huge love letter to the golden era of comics! Thanks for the nostalgia!!!

    James Robinson revealed in a Hero Illustrated interview at the time this title was launched that he and his wife spend their weekends traveling to antique fairs to collect cutlery sets, etc.

    Tony Harris gets alot better. Check out the sandman mystery theater crossover. It was my first exposure to watching a artist grow in real time.

    It was the Nineties! Shop owners ordered most comics months in advance, so the #0 thing was an attempt by DC and others to shore up the orders on the first two issues rather than have orders beginning with the second issue drop off drastically before the actual readers had even had a chance to read number 1.

    Starman was the only gem of Zero Hour. They all started at 0.

  • @alejandrocaracciolo5975
    @alejandrocaracciolo5975 2 года назад +6

    The first issue of Starman, is 0. Starman was one of the new titles launched during the Zero Month, when Zero Hour was published.
    Zero Month was when all 0 issues were published and the new titles started with that issue. Manhunter, Fate, Primal Force were other titles that came from that, but the best of the bunch was Starman.

    I was noticing a nod (several actually) to a Golden Age villain called the Ragdoll. The masked gang members and a piece of graffiti on the wall on the last page. What I remember about Starman was that it was extremely serialised, and in many cases, it was best to read the series in the trades. Which I suspect is something that was popularised by Gaiman's Sandman.
    One of the few times that I was blown away by color choices was in either the first or second issue of Darkhawk which used some similar greens to evoke rainy skies. A lot of 90s color (and I do stress a lot) was ugly muddy colors, especially in books like the Impact! line, that was well written, but was dragged down by the colors.

    I collected this series monthly and loved it all the way through. Although it was completed decades ago, and I purged almost all my comics, I kept this series and lent it out many times. A full read-through is very satisfying - they stay true to character and pay a TON off. They have a lot of fun with the style & imagery. :)

    That second to last page which is virtually all black w a couple weak textures probably bought a lot of time. Artists who worked w Keith Giffen would say as much, a couple pages of entirely black inner monologues or something with the lights all turned off to balance pages of full of Legionnaires or Justice Leaguers.

    This series, Tom Mandrake's Spectre, and Paul Guinan's Chronos felt like "vertigo lite". Trying to appeal to an older reader but with one foot stuck in superhero comics. It seems like that's all of DC comics now

    i'm a huge starman fan but everything you guys pointed out is understandable and very fair, starting the story with #0 is editorial suicide
    the book really resonated if the reader is super into classic DC lore but it's not really something everybody can pick up and enjoy
    Harry's style refines a lot during his tenure on the book and towards the end i grew to like it a lot but the series really sings when Peter Snejbjerg replaces him as penciler towards the end

      Oddly. I'm about 45 issues deep into the run on DC Infinite, and despite being largely a marvel zombie I've been proper enjoying it. It's the other way for me where references in this send me down the rabbit hole to research lore.

    • @marcomah
      @marcomah 2 года назад +1

      @@markwhittington1070 to be honest i'm the same, i started reading comics in the mid to late 90s and gravitated towards stories that were full of references like Busiek's avengers but i get it's not to everybody's taste.
      Starman is also a slow burn, takes few issues to really get going, i think Jim and Ed would have appreciated later issues more, maybe one of the times past single issues stories

    No Kayfabe effect on this one, eh? It looks to me like an attempt at Mignola. Hellboy dropped in 93 I think(?) But Mignola had already done Gotham by Gaslight. IDK man, it looks so boring.

    FINALLY, I’m so glad someone else calls out this series for the overrated, bland and bloated superhero mush that it is.
    After hearing so many old timers gush about how great it was, I finally sat down and read the first 20 issues or so, and it bored me to tears.
    I understand it being a beacon of light in the blighted mainstream comics wasteland of the time, but that means you should be searching for better comics, of which there were plenty.
