- After being on the danganronpa side of tiktok a bit, I decided to make a video exploring how the fandom could be improved.
We have some major issues with it, that I think need more focus. I focus on a few points such as shipping, cosplay, minors being ignored/degraded, doxxing and people's headcanons.
I really love danganronpa, and I hope everyone can do better to see what's going wrong in our fandom. I want to try to make it a better place.
Imagine disliking a character and getting bombarded with hate comments lol some parts of this fandom is really really toxic ngl
Exactly, everyone has their own opinion, and for some reason, people like to bash others bc they like/dislike a character
Yeah I don't even say my opinion anymore because I'm so sick and tired of getting bombed with hate comments. Everytime I tell people I hate Komaeda it feels like they think that's the worst thing ever.

at first i hated hifumi because he was a little weird but after seeing him nerd it out with gundham and being pretty cool and chill in drS and the utdp, i think hifumi’s a pretty cool guy, and doesn’t at all deserve the hate he gets, especially because teruteru exists.

@@shrekslovingwife7701 I can only hope the fandom can grow out of it. It seems only recently it really got HORRENDOUS; which means theoretically it should chill out soon. Eventually. Currently sadly the fandom is considered very toxic, and that's something that'll probably be the label forever now. It's like Undertale; the fandom is forever tainted by what happened in the past.

whenever i meet those toxic fans being rude, i approach them being really calm and respectful and most of the time they block me or just don’t respond it’s amazing

Eh, the fandom really didn't used to be this bad when it was small 10 years ago. Any fandom that gets big enough becomes toxic and tends to stay that way, it's just how it is.
The cosplay community on the other hand when it gets involved in a fandom, just adds to the problem half the time from what I've seen. This fandom's also gone through a couple waves of New fans a few times, which isn't a bad thing on its own, but this makes gatekeepers and young fans mix unfortunately. I know that last year the fandom seemingly exploded after a 'dry' period, so all of these newer problems have appeared as of recent.
The fandom usually tends to calm down in these 'dry'( when the series hasn't made any content in a while)periods. I know it lasted about 2 years after v3 released pretty much.

I think these are the Rules of the fandom
1. Don’t tell a soul about a ship you like in fact don’t even mention the characters names
2. It’s illegal to cosplay for fun now
3. If you see something you don’t like you have full rights to give people their address
4. Be so toxic to the point that people will stay away from the fandom as a whole
5. Have people hate you

One time, somebody called me transphobic for saying that Chihiro was a boy even though it's canon. And when I told them it's ok to have headcanons and that theirs was valid, they said that it wasn't a headcanon and that it was canon that Chihiro was a trans women. Am I in the wrong?
Nope! So that’s actually a huge argument in the fanbase and a delicate subject as far as I can tell. But canonically, Chihiro is a boy. As you said people are fine having headcanons! But it’s unfair to insult you, especially with saying you’re transphobic, for saying the canon.

LGBTQ+ ships are 100% okay, but, not everyone will ship a particular ship, even if they support the community, I am in the community but I don't ship characters or agree with most ships. Not shipping gay characters does NOT mean I hate gay people. The fandom needs to get this.

I need to say once I was at a con and I saw someone who’s white cosplaying Angie no one cared just because they had white skin cosplaying Angie which is great! But to the right of them there was this random person yelling at a black person cosplaying Ibuki because “Ibuk isn’t black” like shut up.

Kokichi is literally the most controversial Character in the whole entire fandom.
If you dislike Kokichi - and are being respectful about it - you get Kokichi stans attacking you for no reason at all.

I do believe tho Apart of why normal Kokichi fans get attacked is because of the shitty impression that the toxic stans have made.

Thank you for this- the fandom is a dark place and I tend to stay away from the Twitter and Simp discord servers because I’m afraid of being doxxed for having an opinion. I am not getting murdered over a game ^^ and tbh- you’re one of the first “Kokichi Kinnies” if that’s what you want to call them to be reasonable and respectful and I applaud you for that. you have my upmost respect and support. :)
Also, it’s not just the people who like Kokichi it’s every character but I’ve mostly seen it with him, I’ve also seen it with Mikan but that was once! so please don’t call me biased.

It's so sad that nowadays this fandom is considerated toxic. When I joined the fandom, it was actually pretty chill, very chaotic but that was part of the fun. Of course there still was toxic people, but nothing compared to how is it right now since it became popular on Tik Tok. I miss when we just laughed about the egg/avocado jokes or stuff like that ):

I've been in the fandom for 2-3 years even though I joined early there is a side of the community which is horrible and extremely hostile I stick with the Better side of it and ether completely ignore the other side or rarely go near it for these exact reasons

Here are some things i experienced within 2 months (on Danganronpa Amino which is worse):
-Got hated on because my favorite character is Korekiyo.
-Almost got doxxed because i didn't draw a certain accessory on a character.
-Got into multiple very heated arguments because i simply didn't like Kokichi, Hifumi, Hiyoko and the ship Saiouma.
-Got some very hurtful comments cause i apparently didn't put a TW for Shuichi.
-Again got hurtful comments for not putting a spoiler warning.
And the list goes on, To sum it up: I hate this fandom.
As a Saiouma shipper, I'd like to apologize for us. Please remember that you can like/dislike anything u want, it's not my business

Yeah I tend to unfollow when I see toxic people in the fandom, but for this video I took note of all the ones I seen. But in all honesty, even though there are toxic people. Most people I have engaged with are really friendly, especially on reddit.

She ✨ROCKED✨ the look and I looked at the comments and there were so many people fat shaming her and calling her a fat pig and telling her she can’t cosplay junko cuz she is black. A while back I saw a black Ibuki cosplayer and when I saw her, my jaw dropped. She was stunning. The wig was wavy, with neon pink, cyan and white in with Ibuki’s dark hair, and I was just blown away. It’s horrible to see how people don’t think someone can’t cosplay because they don’t have the same skin tone, or share their nationality or something
Bruh, Angie is black and you know how many white people cosplay her and get no hate. Same with Sakura. And I hate it when people whitewash Aoi and Sakura too. Like I know you can see their skin tone

Honestly, the fandom was a lot better back when big creators haven't found out about the series. I've been in the Danganronpa fandom for 2 years already, and the fandom provided so many amazing artists, cosplayers, heck I've gained a few friends because of our shared love and passion for the series and characters.
Now that the fandom has gotten bigger, so does the toxicity and hatred for one another over a certain opinion. Plus they like revolving around ships and sexuality headcanons A LOT. (I've lost track of the DR fandom for a few months now, but I'm only staying on its good side.... For now)
True. I was in the fandom for at least 10 year and it was more healthy when it was a niche game. Now, I think there’s too much children who play this game when they shouldn’t.
I had to left the fandom for a time and when I came back, I got kinda doxxed, I think ( They succeeded to find my phone number just to harass me outside of Twitter too) , and all of this for a shipping opinion seen as "homophobic". About two characters who are, anyway, dead . Like more than half of the casting of the game.

i've been in the DR fandom for almost a year now, and before i joined the fandom i thought it was really good. the show and games were awesome (SDR2 and NDRV3 being my favorite games), but the fandom itself can be very scary.
since my phone has been broken for almost a year now, i haven't been able to do any of my cosplays (mostly kazuichi and komaru), but to be honest I'm kinda glad.
since I'm a minor myself, I'm honestly scared to start cosplaying when i get my new phone. i don't want to be doxxed or harassed for being a DR cosplayer, much less for wearing clothes and accessories that i want to put into my cosplays.

i personally really hate discourse about trans girl chihiro - I love lgbt headcanons, and totally welcome trans ones. my main issue is the fact that so many people view chihiro as "uwu cute soft girl - oh he's a boy? now he's a trans girl that must be protected!"... i hate it so much. it completely ignores the core aspect of his story; his courage and want to be a true "man", and also the whole story arc of how despite looking feminine, mondo envied his courage and for being a "real man". for either trans hc you need to erase some of his canon writing, but i think his story actually lines up much more with a trans BOY than a trans girl :
- uses he/him pronouns
- forced to dress as a girl because he didnt match up to society's view of masculinity
- much more comfortable around male characters
- respected mondo and wanted to train to be a "real man" by society's standards
- wanted to gain strength so he could tell his secret to the cast (basically, coming out as trans)
- all his friends who cared about him referring to him as he/him, and alter ego using masculine pronouns as well (who he programmed)
Doesn't the core aspects of his story line up so much more with a trans boy who was forced to pretend to be a girl in their childhood, but found strength to accept themselves, their own definition of masculinity, and "come out" to their friends? The only person that refers to Chihiro/alter ego with she/her pronouns is hifumi... who is quite literally a delusional incel who saw alter ego as his cute little waifu.
Moral of the story: you cant ship straight ships on the danganronpa fandom

Teruteru isn’t that bad in my opinion. And I kinda head canon that instead of just being a pervert, he just makes perverted jokes. But he calls everyone “hun” and sometimes “babes”. He’s a really good character..... but I still can’t get over his accent tho 😂🤣👌🏼

Personally, this fandom is really funny and radiates pure crackhead energy, its fun to be in! But, with all good things come the toxic side. Now I personally have managed to stay off the toxic side of the community..ish. Mostly since Im only on danganronpa yt and danganronpa pintrest (which i find to be slightly less toxic than danganronpa tiktok or other ones). I really like this fandom, but it can get toxic when coming to favourites or cosplays.

Just going to post a toxic fandom story that’s been happening for the past few weeks:
On Tiktok there’s a fan account for the ship between Shuichi and Tsumugi, they recently got into a bit of drama with a young Saiouma shipper, as the Saiouma shipper said on their own post that saimugi made them uncomfortable. This then evolved into the saimugi shipper creating a discord server and hatepage dedicated to attacking the Saiouma shipper. This has been happening for weeks and it hasn’t died down, the Saiouma shipper is constantly being attacked by members in the server even though they’ve already had to delete 2 Tiktok accounts because of all the harassment.
^ I don’t feel like going deep into what happened because it gets a bit convoluted, but thats basically the gist of what happened.

I personally don't ship it, but people have been taking their hate for it too far (spamming tags with gore and whatnot).

What's annoying is that people start blaming everything on Kokichi stans/kinnies just because some od them did bad things. You can't even say you like Kokichi anymore without people jumping at you saying you aren't valid and you don't deserve rights. I recently joined the Danganronpa fandom. I've been in many fandoms with toxic sides to them, so it was easy to ignore them at first. Then i started going on tiktok, and jesus christ it is awful. As you mentioned, a lot of cosplayers are getting hated on and doxed because of their skin colours design choices and it's terrible.
I really love the fandom but the toxic side is terrible, i really hope that part at least turns it down a bit because the way things are now is just down right bad.

I'm so glad you made this video because i wanted to explain to my friend that making fun of someone for what they are wearing/ what they think of is seriously not ok. I kin Kokichi and many others myself for several reasons, but at least i am not racist or doxing people just because of what they think and wear. If they're happy with what they are wearing, let them wear it. It's not bothering you! You're hurting their feelings and making them not post anymore because of what you say to them. (sorry i am ranting here, i have had a similar experience with my cosplay)
what makes me sad is just like what you said, people hating on characters because of their ships and stuff.
one example is sonia, and soudam shippers. as a soudam shipper myself, im disappointed in the people who just hate on sonia because they ship them. sonia is a great character, she says some funny lines despite being sidelined a lot, she doesn't deserve hate just because of a ship!!
And to make it worse, Sondam shippers do the same to Kazuichi for being a “creep”. Like bruh
