I recognize this video is now 4 years old, but it saved me a ton of money and quite frankly, saved me from giving my vehicle to salvage. I own a couple 2009 Nissan Cubes, and one started making the whining noise and will not move when in drive. Four different mechanics told me I needed a replacement transmission which was on back order even from the dealer at around $4,000. I let the vehicle sit for a while and came across this video. Luckily I knew a bit about working on cars, from my younger days, and got to work. I drained the transmission fluid, but no change in functionality. I then drained the fluid again, changed both cone and strainer filters, and topped off with Idemitsu CVT fluid (refused to pay $27/quart for OEM). While the noise went away completely, the gear shift was not as smooth as I liked and I developed a slight oil leak around the pan. I then drained the fluid again, replaced the pan, bolts, and gasket (all factory) and refilled with Amsoil CVT fluid this time. Now the Cube runs like brand new again and no leaks. It is important to torque the pan bolts to 52 in/lbs.

For my 2009 nissan versa i had P1778 for stepper motor so i got that replaced and everything cleaned out. 2 weeks later same issue. I pulled codes from transmission yesterday and it gave P1778 and P0868. The only symptom i experience is delay gas pedal response 3-5 seconds. No noises and no smell. You think valve body can fix the issue or transmission replacement needed?

2013 Altima drives fine unless on a long drive then on a stop to take off will lag to pick up speed. Getting p0776 otherwise drives great what do you suggest?

Replace the valve body it’s the solenoid”A” stuck off I have same problem in my 2010 maxima I Just ordered the valve body few days ago once you replace that your car should be fine I was told I need a new transmission but I’ll definitely spend 150 on valve body and $30 on gasket and new transmission filter and $100 on fluid before I go and spend $3500-4000 on a transmission
We've got the same problem error code P0746 already replaced transmission oils, had it cleaned and still when It operate at high temp it doesnt drive and we have to wait several minutes to cool ito down to drive it again. Mechanic told me to replace the valve body

How far up the dip stick should the fluid be on a Cvt transmission it’s hard to see in the video? I have a p0868 code only. I filled it to the second notch it looks like you fill it above the notch by 2 inches is that correct? When i drive long journeys about 200 km, the car will not change gear going into limp mode at 40 mph with a whinning noise, i diagnosed it and gave P01740 code something to do with torque converter clutch solenoid ? The problem I have with my 1.8 Tiida is that the PenriteNS2 fluid is yellow, and almost impossible to see on the dipstick, (which is a swine to remove if the clip is engaged - I now fit it the other way around.) Our 1.5 has red fluid, and it's so much easier to read. My neighbour paid over $5000 for a replacement transmission in his wingrod, which is mechanically identical to the Tiida/Versa, and it was just making horrible noises. I'd say that a $400 filter and fluid change would have fixed it. Love your work. What do you know about the Honda Jazz CVT?

Worked for me in New Zealand. 2006 Nissan note, would not engage in any gear (forward reverse etc.) Replaced fluid with NS2 compatible (Penrite Multi use CVT fluid) as our parts place don't sell them anymore 😕. But runs good now.
22 bolts on my 1.8 Tiida pan, with a manual ratchet. I was over it by bolt 3. there's a little cylindrical filter at the top, but, apparently, nobody ever replaces it, so it's almost impossible to buy. I think it's for the breather.
Nice to see another canadian mechanic. I didnt know there was a 2nd cartridge paper filter inside and i didnt know red motomaster cvt fluid was ns2 compatible i always get the green oem ns2 from the dealer. Good to know
I just change the cvt oil in my mum tiida and the oil was dirty but there was little metal bits in the sump. There are on issues or noises from the cvt before or after i change the oil. But i on its not a good thing.
If it has little metal on the sump u got a worn part somewhere in ur transmission dont bother to change the fluid anymore rebuild ur transmission or replace it

Base on my experience with this if the car still drivable and u cant hear grinding sound coming from the transmission thereis a big chance its still fixable by just doing this methos how ever no guarantee i did made this video just to show u guys that this can be fix by just ceaning ur tranny filter and replacing the fluid and u will spent a portion of a 3kplus worth of replacement transmission ..u can only spent around $350 cad compare to 3k replacement/rebuild transmission and if u wanna reach me this is my business number 7783235613 thanks

I have a P0868 code on my 2014 Dodge Journey SXT 3.6. I have park, reverse, neutral, but only 2nd gear when in drive (limp mode). When in manual shift, it only shows “D”, does not show the actual gear your in and won’t manually shift. On the dash information panel, the transmission temperature is not displaying any temperature and the thermometer 🌡 gauge is at the very top on a (cold start). I also have a P1745 code. The journey has 307,000km on it and has been properly maintained. This problem just came out of nowhere. I took it to the garage today to get it scanned and I had the engine oil and filter changed (was due). Diagnosis after codes was to take it to the dealer for transmission. I also found out today that the oil filter/cooling housing is leaking (common problem), so now I have to get that fixed. Also, I just want to mention that I’ve had the transmission fluid exchanged at the quickly lube. But, I did not do the pan and filter (big mistake I’ve heard). So, I’m leaning towards a clogged filter throwing the P0868 and the P1745 is an issue with the pressure sensor caused by the clogged filter as well. I drive it very lightly. So I’m hoping it’s just needs a flush,pan and filter service. It’s got 307,000km on the filter so ya it needs to be changed. No leaks on the transmission, that was checked today by regular garage. She’s has great torque and take off but only the one (2nd) gear. She will park, go into neutral, reverse, but can only go 50-60km/hr (limp mode).

I bought the car from Anthony and it had a p0868 and p0746 and metal shavings in the pan. Cleaned the filters and flushed all new fluid and added an in-line filter. Am I wasting my time and money and have to replace the trany of mybe just the sol A. Help please. Im thinking a lost cause at this point. Thanks
Greetings, My 2012 Nissan Altima 2.5SL is at a transmission shop. Had 6 codes. They replaced the transmission valve body. Now the only code that remains is P0868. Been 3wks and they can't clear code. u need to rebiult or replace ur tranny cuz ur sensor teeling the ecm that theres no enough fluid going trough to the tranny ..and base on my experience ur variator is done ( bearing broken or seal ring worn)

I have a 2007 nissan versa and I try to keep the maintenance up myself . I’m no mechanic, but recently I’ve been hearing a buzzing sound; almost like a gurgling sound when I accelerate and gets louder as it speeds up. This applies to 07-09 Nissan versa or tilda SL cvt transmission ..And yup ns2 should be red and most transmission oil are red ns2 or regular tranny fluid

@@asianmechanicguy6483 thanks , I'm having trouble with my murano. It is good until it gets uo to operating temp then it goes into lemp mode. I have 2 codes p1778 and p0746. I installed a new step motor, it didn't help. It has 193,000 miles.
Anthony Henry I have the p0746 code and though it was my air intake hose since it had a crack in it but it didn’t help and now I’m debating changing my whole valve body ahahah but if your fluid is burnt you should try changing it since it should smell sweet
@@kaboom1774 I think my problem may be the fluid control valve. I have watched alot of videos on the transmission. Seems they can get worn and stick. So as it heats up and expands then it would be more prone to stick. Only way to know is pull the transmission and take it apart.
@@tankwhite.7036 yeah currently I have a p0746 p0868 .i took the valve body ,magnets and filter out and cleaned it ,replaced it with new fluid .No leaks .Took a road trip across 3 states back to back and the car was smooth with great power . Month later same check engine light came on .car lost power .Turns out when the fluid is hot ,it’s not on the dip stick level on “hot”.Add another quart maybe tomorrow and hopefully that solves the problem .
genuine ns2 from dealership is green in color ..aftermarket like motomaster cvt ns2 fluid generic its red and its replacement fluid i hope i clear up ur doubtfulness
Is two different transmissions in Nissan one is just the regular transmission and another one is cvt transmission, I think you’re using the wrong fluid you better watch out
dont worry brother this is the right fluid its a cvt transmission and ive done almost 20 cvt transmission for this specific car and by the way im a nissan dealership mechanic

Glad that you fixed the car. If it is taken to the dealership, they would say that the transmission is shot, replace to whole transmission.

bring it a transmission shop most likely ur having a transmission problem too bad

if he open the transmission pan for sure he clean the tranny filter too ..most of nissan tranny filter is a fine strainer and its reusable

I have a P0868 code on my 2014 Dodge Journey SXT 3.6. I have park, reverse, neutral, but only 2nd gear when in drive (limp mode). When in manual shift, it only shows “D”, does not show the actual gear your in and won’t manually shift. On the dash information panel, the transmission temperature is not displaying any temperature and the thermometer 🌡 gauge is at the very top on a (cold start). I also have a P1745 code. The journey has 307,000km on it and has been properly maintained. This problem just came out of nowhere. I took it to the garage today to get it scanned and I had the engine oil and filter changed (was due). Diagnosis after codes was to take it to the dealer for transmission. I also found out today that the oil filter/cooling housing is leaking (common problem), so now I have to get that fixed. Also, I just want to mention that I’ve had the transmission fluid exchanged at the quickly lube. But, I did not do the pan and filter (big mistake I’ve heard).
So, I’m leaning towards a clogged filter throwing the P0868 and the P1745 is an issue with the pressure sensor caused by the clogged filter as well. I drive it very lightly. So I’m hoping it’s just needs a flush,pan and filter service. It’s got 307,000km on the filter so ya it needs to be changed. No leaks on the transmission, that was checked today by regular garage. She’s has great torque and take off but only the one (2nd) gear. She will park, go into neutral, reverse, but can only go 50-60km/hr (limp mode).

Thanks for the detailed video, i have a small tiny fragments on the dip stick, just found them yesterday. However the trany works ok, did not notice any lag or missing a gear. Shall i change the oil and vlean the filters? Or leave it since its wotking? PS: the oil is still looking ok
Try to open ur tranny pan that way u can check and decide for ur cvt transmission

I bought the car from Anthony and it had a p0868 and p0746 and metal shavings in the pan. Cleaned the filters and flushed all new fluid and added an in-line filter. Am I wasting my time and money and have to replace the trany of mybe just the sol A. Help please. Im thinking a lost cause at this point. Thanks

My 2012 Nissan Altima 2.5SL is at a transmission shop. Had 6 codes. They replaced the transmission valve body. Now the only code that remains is P0868. Been 3wks and they can't clear code. Can you suggest what else could cause this code? Do you think the transmission need to be replaced/rebuilt?
u need to rebiult or replace ur tranny cuz ur sensor teeling the ecm that theres no enough fluid going trough to the tranny ..and base on my experience ur variator is done ( bearing broken or seal ring worn)
There is 2 pressure flow valves in the pump.. that is where your problem is

Is is possible that my 2 filters are dirty? I changed the fluid with cvt fluid and it made no difference. My old fluid was black just like your old fluid was. Mine does not have any codes and does not make any strange sounds... Please help me ...
Try to clean the 2 filters too it will help a lot i distribution of cvt fluid on ur transmission

I have a 2007 nissan versa and I try to keep the maintenance up myself . I’m no mechanic, but recently I’ve been hearing a buzzing sound; almost like a gurgling sound when I accelerate and gets louder as it speeds up.

Is the process different for same year but automatic transmission (non-cvt)?
non cvt has different transmission component but they are pretty much thesame in cleaning the filter

Hi Boss my wife has 2008 Nissan tiida same as versa 5door hatchback but it's a right hand drive in New Zealand does the same method apply and does the ns2 cvt fluid have to be red or should be red? Thank you i really enjoyed watching your video as I will be attempting this on her car
This applies to 07-09 Nissan versa or tilda SL cvt transmission ..And yup ns2 should be red and most transmission oil are red ns2 or regular tranny fluid

My only concern is the transmission pan bolts torque setting do you know what they are please as I don't want to over tighten or under tight them and if there is anything else I should be aware of as I will be doing it exactly how you are doing it cheers 👌

I installed a new step motor, it didn't help. It has 193,000 miles.
The fluid looks very dirty and smells burnt.
Anthony Henry I have the p0746 code and though it was my air intake hose since it had a crack in it but it didn’t help and now I’m debating changing my whole valve body ahahah but if your fluid is burnt you should try changing it since it should smell sweet
@@kaboom1774 I think my problem may be the fluid control valve. I have watched alot of videos on the transmission. Seems they can get worn and stick. So as it heats up and expands then it would be more prone to stick. Only way to know is pull the transmission and take it apart.
CVTs are SO simple.
The only reason they go wrong is lack of maintenance, or incorrect fluid.

A cheap ultrasonic cleaner will do a mighty job of cleaning the trans filter screen.

@@MrJOHNY347 Yes there was a leak in the transmission pan. I got a new pan, gasket, and transmission Fluid the problem was solved.
@@tankwhite.7036 yeah currently I have a p0746 p0868 .i took the valve body ,magnets and filter out and cleaned it ,replaced it with new fluid .No leaks .Took a road trip across 3 states back to back and the car was smooth with great power . Month later same check engine light came on .car lost power .Turns out when the fluid is hot ,it’s not on the dip stick level on “hot”.Add another quart maybe tomorrow and hopefully that solves the problem .

genuine ns2 from dealership is green in color ..aftermarket like motomaster cvt ns2 fluid generic its red and its replacement fluid i hope i clear up ur doubtfulness
Is two different transmissions in Nissan one is just the regular transmission and another one is cvt transmission, I think you’re using the wrong fluid you better watch out
dont worry brother this is the right fluid its a cvt transmission and ive done almost 20 cvt transmission for this specific car and by the way im a nissan dealership mechanic
