The Slaws are back in Castleton in the Peak District comparing staying at the Castleton Caravan and Motorhome Club site on Friday night with a pub stopover at the Peak Hotel on Saturday night.
As usual they have their two Lhasa Apso dogs, Billy and Jessie with them and they are in Helga their Hobby motorhome. @HobbyCaravan

Clubsite all the way. With all the utilities going up, it’s the same for sites too. I didn’t buy my van to stay in a carpark. For and against for everyone. Great to be able to get on sites now that deposits are being taken, so many people didn’t bother turning up and taking a pitch that could be used.
It seems like a no brainer to us that the pub stop is the best (even though you missed the meal times lol) but its swings and roundabouts and while caravan and motorhome sites etc are all good, we have found independent sites to be as good if not better (in general) its all about what you want and what you will accept. I have to say that its good that you take your time to inform us all of the pros and cons of particular sites/places and that's what makes you both so entertaining and informative. keep up the good work
Chris aka Burty Bee
Thank you! We do take our pub stops seriously 🍻 #saveourpubs
Absolutely using the restaurant public parking and enjoy the service on site. No brainer thing, when they ask for 40+ to stay the night at the other place that I don't care to mention by name even.
Just today i came accross your site.....i just love you two awwwwwwwww everything you do is fab. Lots of love x
Thank you Sandra! ❤️
Thank you for this. We’ve been watching your France trip which has been great, then saw this. We have only had a MH for two years so can’t really compare how prices used to be in CMC, but we prefer to pay for facilities, sit outside the van and a lot of the sites are well located and can be peaceful/close to nature. On all the sites we’ve visited, there is pride in the sites from the wardens with lovely hanging baskets, herb gardens etc. Having visited France for the first time and stayed on an independent site, we then saw the price difference more readily… £20 for a spot with facilities v £40 on average for a UK site… anyway, liked watching your comparison👍 but we’ll likely stick to sites but will do more research too around independent sites / certifieds.
Thanks for watching! We love sites too for the same reasons as you. We also like to support our pubs, as they are a dying breed 😢
Great vlog never been down there before, really enjoying your vlogs , even husband is addicted, being from Yorkshire ourselves, completely get your banter , 🤭
can I ask Mrs slaw where are your sandles from pls thanks 🥰
Castleton is a beautiful place to visit! Glad you get our banter 😜 Mrs Slaw’s sandals are Merrells 🚍☀️
@@TheSlawsAdventures fab thanks, I’m going to invest, they look very comfy 🥰
Good evening Mr and Mrs slaw firstly I wonder how many people caught Mr slaws tongue in cheek (those are big so are the sheep lol) now to the debate ,its lovely to have a choice of venues both are very important to us motorhomers sometimes me and Mrs Gower love to go to a camp sites spread out on our pitch and relax knowing we are on hook up and the option of using the facilities, ie toilet and shower block not our own , emptying waste tanks and toilet, other times we chose a pub stopover because there normally on the beach or in a town to which we like to explore and off course visiting the pub at night eating and chatting with the locals ,off course camp sites need to be looked after by staff and that has to be paid for and there secure so nothing to worry about at night. Ps we've never had a problem with a pub stopover but you get what you get . So in my opinion there both as important. Great vlog again Mr and Mrs slaw until next week stay safe take care the gowerz Portsmouth xx
Trust you Mark 🤦🏻♀️ Did you hear Mrs Slaw say ‘those are big buggers’ to the sheep? We love a good site and a good pub stopover. Something for everyone 👍🏻
we know why you missed your food 😂😂😂 sorry for hi jacking your evening but we had a amazing night with you both this took me right back to that summers evening xxxx we like to make it as cheap as possible and wild camp as much as possible i think £40 a night is terrible and i alway find with these sites every one want a to be up and out at the crack of dawn and don’t care about how loud they are ❤❤ hope we have another unexpected night very soon xxx
Thanks Lisa and Mark! Yes, you are very bad influence 🤣
@@TheSlawsAdventures 😳🥰🥰🥰
use to love the Caravan Club before all the re-branding we were members for years, but sadly to say we cancelled our membership as the prices are way too high we use independent sites much cheaper and the facilities can be just as good. We also think that the independent site owners are a lot friendlier too, but each to their own this is just our view another interesting vlog
Thank you! Prices are increasing at an alarming rate 😢
Great vlog and walk. We did Cave Dale and Mam Tor last weekend, walking from Tideswell Moor.
Thank you! It’s a beautiful part of the country ❤️
Its no good, I have to get some carabiners to put on my rucksacks🤔😁
🤣 Slaw loves a good carabiner!
I'm soon to start my motorhome life full-time this year and have to say car parks win, there's so many ways to find a good location other than a Tesco carpark near a motorway. Loads of apps and I feel once a week I'll test myself to an independent camp ground for facilities if needed. I'll be subscribing, love the humour you both have. 😊
Thank you! Hope you have lots of great adventures in your motorhome 🚍☀️
Pub stops wherever we can. Especially for just short weekends away. When we stay in Castleton we stay on the road further up (dead end) and walk into village for tea and a pub crawl 😁
Lots of sites in the area to stay in and many vanners are upsetting locals by emptying their toilets in the local Brook. Worth considering the local farmer who rents his field for 10 pounds a night and avoid upsetting locals 🤔
@jbrislen1 wasn't aware of the farmers renting spaces on their land. Will look into that one. I don't want to use campsites for weekends, personal preference. We have never come across nuisance vanlifers leaving any mess behind and we take our waste home with us! Like I said this is only 1 or 2 nights away for us as we are at work all week.
@@camillekenny3142 hi I'm sure you're not aware of the nuisance vanners. There is a farmer as you head through castelton towards hope. Just after the little bridge... that does 10 pound a night. We used to live in hope (the next village down from castelton) and we have moved house since lockdown because of how busy the village got. That aside, we have friends by the broken road who own land. They have had vanners and their kids in their fields making dens, breaking tree branches and emptying their waste in fields. As vanners ourselves I am gutted this has happened to landowners near the broken road. Just want people to understand this😔
We’re so disappointed by vanners who behave like that. We’ve seen vlogs of vanners playing football in farmer’s fields and breaking sticks for building dens. It’s disgraceful. We patronise Holmesfield Farm for car parking and we’re looking forward to staying on their campsite when they get planning permission 👍🏻

We have been in ccc 35 years. Never been on a club site. Usually use 5 van sites but even these are hiking up prices. We don't want any facilities but a tap and elsan but most campers want to take everything with them to get away from it all. Tend to do ths but these usually only on at school holidays . Once the non campers are all back abroad the sites will be grovelling for trade.
Campsite if it was even possible to book it, food in the van and a couple of drinks in the pub🙂. Happy days!!
It’s a beggar trying to book on Castleton or Chatsworth 🤣
After watching this , think I’d go for the pub stop. Looked really nice !
It was indeed!
Hi just subscribed. Mr Slaw, we got same pedal lock as you. If you put the padlock facing the engine it would be harder for someone to drill the lock out if you was unfortunate enough to be a victim of such a crime. Enjoying going through your videos.
Hi Les, welcome! Thanks for the tip 👍🏻
Have you ordered that toll badge yet ATMB only pay for it the months you use it. Thanks for French Trips
No chance Tony, Slaw will not get a toll tag 🤣 Can’t think why 😉🤣
Site prices are getting ridiculous but demand sky high & people still paying, so 🤷🏻♀️. I still use them for facilities but not as often as I have in the past when they weren’t spanking you (ooh err). Love a good pub stop 👍🏻
It’s alarming the rate they’re going up Sue! Even with those prices you still struggle to get a pitch 😱 As long as people pay (and they are doing) the price will continue to rise 😢
When we first bought our motorhome in 2017, our eyes were opened into a whole new world of where we could stop now that we weren’t towing a caravan. We joined Britstops which ended up costing us a lot more money per night as we aren’t lovers of eating out, and felt forced into spending money to eat at not so nice places, although we also did enjoy some great ones too! Now though….shamefully the CAMC network is expensive, and we will probably be cancelling our long standing membership this year…about the only thing I will miss is my card with the number of year’s membership we have…and that’s a sad thing to say about a club that we have enjoyed being part of for so long😥
We’ve been members of Britstops and Motorhome Stopovers in the past. We find that just ringing a pub and asking to stay is the best way. We’ve rarely been refused 👍🏻
Park ups every time for us. As you know we LOVE Castleton ❤️
Sadly The Caravan and Motorhome Club have just become too expensive so we will be cancelling our membership this year x
It is such a shame 😢
Before i watch the video Castleton is up to £55 per night in high season!! Will not pay that ! Look forward to seeing your video.
Wow!! They are still increasing 😢 Hope you enjoyed the vlog 👍🏻
Spot on, we joined the Camping and Caravan Club last October and they give concessions and out of season pricing. Been in CMC for thirty years and it’s been all take. So this could be our last.
Thank you! Club prices have dramatically increased recently 😢
Wow, you certainly get amazing weather up there in February! 😂
🤣 August last year 👍🏻
You did well to get on the carpark! We were there a few weeks ago and it was rammed…
Yes we were! By the bins, but at least we were on 🤣
We tried to get in this pub stop it was jammed packet and we ended up stopping at Mam Tor. We think a pub stop in the winter for 1 night is spot on or traveling to a destination. Like you say we all like the pub atmosphere as well. great Vlog guys. 2 nights chillie good not a third night in the van lol.
Thanks Paul!
Thanks for sharing guys and you are so right about the costs these days, they are way over the score and definately not value for money anymore. To me it looks like the club has jumped on the band wagon to hike prices way beyond what they should be. I cannot understand why a club would want to rip off its membership it just does not make sense. I do hope some of the committee memebrs watch and read the comments here as to me, this should start to raise serious concerns for the club.
Thanks John!
As a member of both clubs ,I've noticed the complaints about pitch charges ,why don't be complaiin directly to the C&M club ,I will be !
I still haven’t managed to clean riding down Cave Dale on the mountain bike.
If you haven’t tried a bit of chocolate in Chilly have go.
Our vans small so bikes go on the back so I wouldn’t be able to relax over my pints if they were in a car park.
Riding down Cave Dale 😱 We’ll have to try chocolate in chilli sometime. You’re not the first to mention it 🤣 Thanks for watching 👍🏻
Stayed in Castleton a few times and always stopped on the Old Mam Tor Road. Its a walk into the village and the only toilets are the ones shown in the video but if you don't mind that its free. Last visit we stopped as close to the village as we could and there was a fair bit of noise from the "boy racers".
We’ve never stayed up on the broken road. It’s always packed! Just like being on a site 🤣
@@TheSlawsAdventures We have the advantage of being retired so get away during the week quite a bit so it's usually fairly quiet.
Hello There Mrs Slaw and Slaw and Doggies , Hope you are all well , Great video , Nice pitch you had, it looked like a nice summers day , And Slaw Broke the egg LOL, i do the same , Great walk and you had sheep there , nice looking secret place you shared, i think i would of done the same with a site and a off grid park up , Thank you for sharing , Take care , Hope you had a nice valentines day .
Thanks Paul, it was a lovely weekend and we did enjoy Valentines ❤️
Oooo!!I don't know,we do both but club sites are getting far to pricy,,but they are fully booked so getting away with it,...the chilli you made looked scummy next time you make it try putting in a couple of squares of good chocolate or a couple of spoons of good quality cocoa powder.youl never go back🥰
Thanks for the tip Jim! Deffo will be trying that 👍🏻
Castleton is only 11 miles from me, and I've been going for years just for the weekends... Even though the prices are getting silly, it's still hard or next to impossible booking a weekend there now.
Even though the prices are increasing at an alarming rate, people are still paying them! It really is difficult to get a pitch 😢
It is always worth giving the site a call as we do get last min cancellations.
Another lovely vlog..thanks for sharing….40 quid a night…sigh !! Pub car park all the time..when myself and wifeski are out in the MH..always hit a pub or two , sooooo makes sense to stay with them
Thank you! You know we like a good pub stop 👍🏻
Subscribed Enjoyed that Thankyou 👍🏻
Thanks Adele! And welcome 🤗
We are members of CMC and CCC, but this year we haven’t booked a single site with them as the prices are ridiculous. We have booked 11 sites when we spend a month in May in Outer Hebrides and none have been more than £27.00 per night with elec and most have been less and all have the most amazing views. We have other things planned throughout the year all on private sites that have been a lot less per night. I am seriously considering not renewing our memberships when they run out. Thank you for yet another brilliant vlog, I love following you on your travels.
Thanks Gill! Have a fantastic trip 🚍☀️
Hi guys love the video, the club sites are far too expensive now , yes they are immaculate but they are becoming out of reach for people who are on a budget. We do lots of rallies ,I know that you have basic facilities but modern vans are equipped to handle it , and some of the DA meets prices are fantastic , from £7 a night depending where you go , so for us club sites are gone . Look forward to seeing the next video ☺️.
Thanks Linda, we did a rally in Knaresborough last year and really enjoyed it 👍🏻
Encouraging members to book a pitch 1 year ahead, fills up the site, when they cancel it goes unobserved by members who HAD wanted to go there but found the dates booked. It kills spontaneity.Price is now too high, sites and membership
Hello Mr and Mrs Slaw, I also really like Castleton and when I seen you both walking up Cave Dale and then heading towards Mamtor on the right is Rowter Farm...I was hoping you was going to overnight there and do a review it looks a really nice place to stay?
Have you already stayed there in Helga if not please put this on your list...😀
Mr Slaw where did you get the Lets Go T.Shirt 👍
Thanks Simon! No, we’ve never stayed at Rowter Farm (yet 😜) Slaw’s T-shirt was from an online store. It came from Germany 👍🏻
Hi, Debbie here from Tylers Travels, i have to agree the sites are getting way to expensive, seems to me pub stop overs are the best better deal as it could work out a lot cheaper and with pub grub included 🙂 Garlic bread with Chilli, always 🙂 Trev would nt be happy if he did nt get garlic bread with his chilli 🙂 Great vblog as always guys, take care x x
Thanks Debbie! We are now converts to garlic bread with chilli 👍🏻
I'm a new subscriber so please excuse the out of the blue question....can you please advise on details of the awning side panel. Especially the pole. Thanks.
Hi Albert, welcome! Our side panels are from Lillypad Leisure. www.windblockers.net
Fabulous vlog as normal guys, went to Castleton last year and stayed at the campsite at the farm at the top of the pass. Thanks for the comparison but the c&m club are pricing themselves our now it's a shame as we have been members over the years. Liked the carpark stop. All the best Bryan and Dawn Mr&Mrs_H_on_tour
Thanks Brian and Dawn! We’ve walked past that campsite many a time, but never stayed there.
Great vlog and so informative (as always). It’s caused us to think a bit here as we’re still fairly new to motorhoming and haven’t had the confidence to stay overnight anywhere off grid yet but the CAMC costs are getting so high that we should give it a try this year. We do love being on a site and having the awning out, sitting and cooking outside but think it’s a great idea to mix it up as you did and then the costs can balance out over a weekend
Thanks Bridget! Yes, that’s exactly what we did. We love being on a site and putting the chairs out, but it was equally as lovely sitting in a pub beer garden 😜
Top vlog as always very much agree the caravan club sites are getting abit over priced, for such as a short weekend maybe it is easyier this way but say for the nc500 I wouldn’t like to think I was paying 40 per night over 2 weeks, u can find lots of hidden gems wild camping 🤙
Thanks Anthony!
Just for info. Many car parks have weight restrictions. Alway worth checking on Internet. Our Talbot Express although fits into a car space its 2.8tons and exceeds ma y weight limits. Cheers from old George
Thanks George!
Excellent video as usual. I have mentioned I loved the WWW Series.saved me the hassle of driving.
Thank you Deryck 👍🏻
I'm from Derbyshire ( Baslow where Chatsworth House is) and my husband a true South Eastern (Dover) always says it never stops raining up there. He has been when we've had 24/7 sunshine and even when we were there in November there was only one miserable day! Went for lunch in Castleton when we were there in November and the castle is a "carrot" for him to go back
The Peak District in stunning! We’ve stayed at the Chatsworth club site many a time and also at the Wheatsheaf 👍🏻
It was your stay at the Wheatsheaf that I started following your vlogs. Have backtracked as well. Love your blogs
Difficult to say as i have not done motorhome hols, but like everything is going up in price, so does seem a little high, and the hotel/pub the bfast looked good, shame you missed the food though, i guess its all about what you enjoy to do and how much your budget will allow, i tend to do self cattering and that does go up every year anyway, but some i have looked at are very expensive for what they are, what is not nowadays, thanks for bringing us along weather though looked so nice xx
Hi Linda, hope you’re well? It’s nice to. I’d things up and have a pitch one night and a pub stop the next. That way you get the best of both worlds x
@@TheSlawsAdventures Anne you are so right nothing nicer than switching things up, just in the midst of organizing my dad's funeral, it has been so hard and i have been struggling a lot, the nightmare of loosing him in such horrendous way and now dealing with so many hurdles is just a joke, nothing is ever straightforward, take care xx
Club site but last time we stay there it was £17 per night and peak time excuse the punn! Good comparison though!😊
Thanks Paul!
Great idea for a video and well done - definitely think they are too expensive now especially when there are private, smaller sites with excellent facilities available at cheaper prices. Only staying in the club for the CL’s now!
Personally prefer to be able to get awning out and tables and chairs and chill especially when the suns out.
Love the idea of the windblocker - which one is it please?
Thanks Andrew! It’s a Lilypad Leisure windblocker. If you scroll back through our vlogs, we did a review of it. We love it ❤️
Unfortunately we would have to pay full whack no other option with a caravan and it not being as easy to go off grid but I know what option I would chose 😊
Some pubs do take caravans Sheila. We stayed at the Fox House in Hathersage in January and there was a caravan staying over 👍🏻
Defo the pub 👍🏼
We love a good pub stopover 👍🏻
Hi both of you can you please tell me what electric stove you use for breakfast this would be ideal for us.. Thankyou
Hi, it’s a Tower electric frying pan.
I think they are pricing themselves out of the market. I’ve booked quite a few private sites in May in Scotland for an average of £33. £40 per night on C & M Club for what is out of season is extortionate. I think a lot of members will consider cancelling their membership.
When i saw the prices i rang them up and said the prices you are charging is almost B&B prices?
Agree my thoughts 💭 as they were getting greedy over the Covid issue, now the electric prices have come along in the last 12 months they have been bitten on the ass as there having to put the prices up to cover the electric..
We are seen prices around £35 to £44 for February..
Utter nonsense..
We plugged our bucanner cruiser into our electric at home to see what cost we would use..
We put the temperature at 21c ps never have it at that more 19c also 24hrs..
Our electric used was £4:85 for 24 hrs 😢
They are, I use CL sites
Agree. The Caravan Nut on RUclips just did a vlog on it. Has 100k views. They might get the message.
I prefer the pub stop I'm with Mrs Slaw I like pub company and atmosphere especially as travelling on my own. If I do go on sites I like a smaller site. Usually I'm a layby girl 😁
Can’t beat a bit of people watching can you Lisa? 👍🏻
We are just back from a weekend in Lincoln, the Lawns car park right by the castle walls and an excellent stop over, £9 for 24 hrs and well lit with cctv. I imagine this will get busy in the busy season. We try and stay away from sites as they are very expensive at the moment, bring back pre covid days, thanks for sharing, Robbo and Barb 👍👍
And the Vic and the Strugglers opposite do good beer!. I would recommend Ole Ole tapas at the Lawns too
Thanks for the tip Paul!
Thanks for the tip Tommo!
Great vlog. Where did you get your sun blocker from please. X
Hi, it’s a Lilypad Leisure windblocker. If you scroll back through our vlogs, you’ll find our review of it. Or this link might work 👍🏻 ruclips.net/video/QzPAO4JO5OM/видео.html
@@TheSlawsAdventures Thank you. Really appreciate you getting back to me x
If you default to the Club Site option I can give you an even bigger price comparison than chairs out chairs in or chili and garlic bread, buy a caravan you will save a fortune!
Only if the caravan costs less than the motorhome. Our friends have paid more for their caravan than we did for our last two vans 🚍☀️
Correction June/july £50.30 two adults and a child?
Goodness! Still increasing 😢
what drone were you flying ? ive just bought a DJI Mini Pro 3 for when we tour in our touring caravan
Hi Warren, a DJI Mini Pro 3 the same!
Would be the pub or a private campsite that tend to be more of a reasonable price every time. No way would I pay that just for a parking space, also most pubs we have stayed at have been free. Chris
It’s the first time we’ve ever paid for a pub stopover. But, due to the location slap bang in the centre of Castleton, we felt it was fully justified 👍🏻
Hi the slaws, just brought a motorhome, we are new comers, but watch your utube all the time. What book do you use for pub stopovers in England. Cheers sue and steve
Hi Sue and Steve, we don’t use a book. We generally think of an area we’d like to visit, then either look on Searchforsites or on Google Maps. We always contact the pub a few days before to make sure it’s okay to stop.
Pub stop over ….mr slaw😀🍺🍺🍺
🤣 Mark, did you expect anything else??
What was the make and model of your security camera and how do you power it off grid?
Hi Jane, it’s a Ring Stickup. It’s powered by rechargeable battery and it’s connected to the router in the motorhome.
@@TheSlawsAdventures thank you 🙂
Pros and cons ..erm......car park x

nice blog again but i have a question;; i know you like a drop o wine n the odd beer but the laws in the uk are strong if the police caught you in charge of a vehicle with liquor on board .............. ????????????????/
We’d have a good defence argument though. Driver’s seat turned round, pedal lock and silver screens on, and keys in the cupboard. Also, we usually have an email trail with the pub confirming our intention to stay overnight in the car park 👍🏻
@@TheSlawsAdventures well done all loose ends covered 👍
Pub stops and CAMPRA stops are the smart way to go for MH's / Campervans. Caravan Clubs have cranked up their prices to silly levels ( got to keep the directors well paid)
We love our pub stops Eugene 🚍☀️
Was that video from last year 🤔
Well spotted! A bit too chilly for shorts in February 🤣
@@TheSlawsAdventures Windemere this weekend £45
So! Just wondered if that £40 charge for the camp site is the normal price or if it's that price with the rise in electric prices ? And HOW do you get your pets to walk all that way without revolting and having a sit down protest !! LOL Richie All stay safe and well.
So! 😜 That was last August prices 😱 Our little dogs are absolute troopers ❤️
I just cannot justify campsite prices, we have been motorhoming now for 10 years and every time we booked a campsite we always regret it, ive lost count of the times i have gone back to the office after just a few hours and demanded a refund, people walking across your pitch, kids kicking a ball by your van, dogs barking, music playing, you go away to have some peace and quiet, i would rather stay in a layby or on a car park than put up with other peoples crap while paying for the privilege.
We really like a club site, but they are pricing themselves out recently. That said they are always full when we try and book 🤣
@@TheSlawsAdventures I suppose it all comes down to how much are people prepared to keep paying ? Will campsites soon only be for the well off... getting the same with everything nowadays, gas electric council tax
