  • Hello I’m Sophie. Welcome to the beginning of my sewing journey, come along with me through all the mistakes and seam ripping! And hopefully feel some solidarity that there are others bumbling their way through this hobby.
This is the eighth video of a series creating a full 18th century outfit, that is inspired by Outlander. I’m using the McCall 7735 pattern which is Outlander licensed, and I’ll be loosely explaining the steps as I go. For this video I am creating the jacket portion of the pattern. This video isn't really what I would call a "How To" because I have no idea what I'm doing most of the time, maybe more of a moral support video to those like me.
Disclaimer I am very much an amateur seamstress and make many mistakes.
    Materials Used:
Sewing Machine- Husqvarna Viking 100 that I got used
Thread- Polyester thread from Joanns for most uses, silk red thread for eyelets
Fabric- Red Worsted Wool from Burnley and Trowbridge
    Cutting Mat and Ruler- www.amazon.com...
    Music from iMovie library
I was inspired by many channels here which focus on Historical Costuming to finally try to do it on my own, even though I have almost no experience sewing. These are some of the wonderful ladies I was inspired by:
    American Duchess: / @americanduchess1
    Bernadette Banner: / @bernadettebanner
    Costuming Drama: / @costuming_drama
    Morgan Donner:
    / @morgandonner
    Hat to Hem: / @hattohem

The jacket turned out beautifully! I love the red color a lot.
Small tip for fusible interfacing: not using steam and pressing 10 to 12 seconds on one spot gets the best result :) At least, that's what my vocational qualification sewing teacher showed me and I never had trouble with it. I hope it will help you!

Thanks for the tip ☺️. I really thought the important part of attaching interfacing was using a lot of steam 🤦🏼‍♀️ maybe that’s why I have such a hard time with it!

@@AndSewitBegins Definitely leave the iron on each spot for 10 seconds, and it will stick just fine. Usually the lowest iron setting you can get with the steam still on (which on my iron is "linen" setting), unless it says not to use steam. A hotter iron than necessary can melt the interfacing. (Ask me how I know, ha ha.)

    1.) You are freaking adorable!
2.) This outfit looks SO good on you despite the challenges you faced; and
3.) You did an AMAZING job for having "almost no experience sewing"...you give me hope. Because I too have almost no experience sewing.
I am currently working on an 18th century petticoat and am dreaming of making some 18th century stays (and I am TERRIFIED to try!)...which is how I found your channel. Thank you so much for sharing your journey!! :)

lungsnlipslockd thank you so much ☺️ With perseverance and watching lots of RUclips videos I think anyone can make a pair of stays, don’t be afraid you can totally do it! Just don’t forget a mock up 👍

Your jacket turned out great! A trick to keep the lining from "rolling forward" and showing is to edgestitch it - basically, after you sew the lining to the outer fabric, turn the garment right side out, then press the seam open and flat, and, stitching close to the edge, sew the lining to the seam allowance of the jacket. There are probably better explanations of this technique online :)

Pour La Victoire next time I line something I will definitely watch some videos for doing that, it sounds genius 😊

It's also sometimes called understitching if that helps the search!

I have had my needle jam like you showed in the video, so you are not alone in have this happen. My suggestion for you machine would be to locate your local sew and vacuum store and take your machine there. They usually have decent prices to maintain/repair your machine for you.

That was awesome to watch! Looks really amazing, that red color on you really makes it pop! Excellent beautiful garment!

I've been sewing for 50 years. The second sleeve never goes in as well as the first, so don't feel bad. Keep up the good work!

Emi Ishino thank you ☺️ I thought that every sleeve would get easier but wait till you see my multitude of problems with my newest projects sleeves 🤣

You have beautiful sewing and fitting instincts! If you're having trouble with your fusible interfacing (and, trust me, everyone does!) your iron may not be hot enough or you're just not pressing it long enough. Also, as stated by someone else, you shouldn't use steam to fuse interfacing. Interfacing is super finicky, and I don't bother with it unless I absolutely have to. The jacket looks great! I look forward to more content on your channel.

The needle probably got caught/made a knot in the bobbin and the fabric. I’ve had that happen with certain fabrics.
    The jacket looks fantastic!

what a beautiful colour, both on the jacket and the skirt! seeing you have to take out those handmade eyelets was so sad 😭 so much work down the drain!

Great Job!!! I love how you abandoned the instructions and just did what you wanted. That was fantastic. I have been known to do that a time or two. It looks great on you. Keep up the fantastic work. And thank you for sharing!!!

Genevieve Atkinson it was more out of necessity because I am terrible at understanding the gibberish in pattern instructions 😂

I enjoyed your video on your process, the only thing I would have changed, would have been not to have sewn in the lining at the waist with the rest of it, that way you could have folded the lining up and hand sew it to hide the raw edges, but it may have made it too bulky if you already mentioned there was like 8 layers in some parts of it. I love how cute it looks on you.
Lol that expression when you did the eyelets too high! 😂 absolute gold! 👏👏👏

Evelyn Rojas Ohh that would have been a good idea, it would have been a much easier way to hide the raw edges 🤦🏼‍♀️ oh well

All my fusible says iron without steam. The moisture stops the adhesion of the glue

Oh interesting, mine calls for a damp pressing cloth in the instructions. Must very for different kinds of interfacing
