- Following the recent murders of Glen and Vida Rafferty on their Normandien farm, on the 5th of September, the Newcastle community protested farm murders and the general state of corruption in the country. Our IRR team interviewed a range of participants at the demonstration. Over 3000 people attended it, forming a 20 km vehicle procession.
At the heart of this protest, we found a community cemented by common values and the desire to live in peace and “to keep on feeding the nation”.
Complementing this short documentary, the IRR is launching a policy document, Land, Lives & Liberty: A five-point plan to save rural SA, which presents a practical set of solutions to make sure that South Africans living in rural areas can thrive and fulfill their ambitions to #LiveFree in a peaceful and prosperous country.

Safety and Security is a fine objective to start with ; the real way to stop this kind of behaviour is social upliftment, education and opportunity for the masses.
Only then can we create reasons for our people to pursue other paths
It's unfortunate, if this issue was just addressed as a farm murders we would be standing in solidarity but some organizations had to bring race into it ( white farm murders to be specific ) this disconnected a majority of us black township dwellers by descent. We have our own issues with deadly crime here as well. But I guess the lives of white farmers are of a priority over ours, I guess all lives matter is just another slogan.
