  • As a fair-skinned hiker I like to have a lot of protection from the sun - especially my head! Hiking hats come in many shapes and sizes and which is best depends on several factors. Here I review the Outdoor Research Sun Runner cap and compare it to the popular Sunday Afternoons Ultra Adventure hats (both the standard and the waterproof Storm version).

I worked as a guide in sea kayaking and hiking tours under the hot sun of Rhodes - Greece, one of the sunniest places on earth. During the years I made a lot of research using dozens hats of famous outdoor brands. So, as a profesional I can say that the Ultra Adventure hat was the best by far.

Great review! Thanks for doing the work for us. i have looked at EVERY hat on the internet and am convinced SA is for me. You helped reinforce that decision for me. My ultra adventure hat has been ordered and on its way!
    Thanks for the great video!

    Nice review and comparison.
Try Unigear Fishing Hat. It has detachable flap for side and back like OR, and a detachable face cover for total coverage, as well as bug net and a carrying pouch for less than USD20. Bit heavier thou.

I have an old SA adventure hat, and now the Ultra Adventure one, and it is my fave for all the reasons you explain on this video. Additionally, this is a great looking design. I'm not too concerned about great looks when I'm outdoors, but I am an outdoor professional who frequently appears on group pictures and so on. The OR hat with the cape makes everybody look so stupid. I've had many clients sporting it, including some very attractive females, but the moment they put that thing on they can't help looking like a dumb basset hound.
Also, if you have a sunny and windy day, the cape tends to flap all over the place leaving your face exposed. I don't mind that the SA Ultra isn't waterproof. I guess that if you're kayaking or fishing you could get the hat wet one way or the other, but for me, if it's raining then it means that the sun is not out, so I'd rather not wear anything, or just wear the hood on my rain jacket.

Nice summary. There's a reason professional fishing guides use a caped hat like the Sun Runner. I had one with a foldable brim making it easy to shove into a pocket when in the trees. But, it is dorky for sure. Debating getting an Ultra Adventure just for that reason, but need to clip magnifying flip glasses to brim for fishing high country lakes and it doesn't do nearly as good a job protecting in the wind.

    Hi Doug,
So the last hat you presented (white cap with 3 flaps) would be perfect for me if it had better face coverage in the brim.

I used a similar hat as the Sunday Afternoons, and my chin burned really bad. Thinking one of those face covers may be needed as well. I'm not sold on the Sun Runner as I think sun can get at face from the sides.

    • @BackcountryPilgrim

Not really. It hangs off the hat and is blown back by the breeze from walking. Pretty lightweight. Otherwise I couldn't stand it haha! Thank you for watching and commenting!
