    Thank you, Emma. I can't agree with you more about paper --- it's impossible to tell people the "best" paper to use, because everyone is different. A paper I love might be disliked by another artist. But one thing is true for everyone -- there are few things more frustrating than fighting with your paper! It truly makes all the difference. It is a good idea to do a series of very small paintings on various papers to learn what works for you. 😊

    As a new to pastels artist I appreciate your videos and tutorial. One recommendation you made in "How to Store and Organise your pastels" was to use the snapbox. At the time of this comment they were hard to find in the USA (or anything of similar quality). I was able to purchase them internationally along with the foam inserts and this ideas has made increasing my pastel collection so much easier. I have a small work space that serves multiple art uses; therefore when I'm done it makes putting away my pastels quick and easy. What I am interested in now is information on how you maintain a clean work space. The pastel dust flies everywhere (not just down into the easel dust tray). What are the best ways to manage keeping pastel dust down? Thank you again. I truly enjoy your videos and style of painting.

    • @EmmaColbertArt
      @EmmaColbertArt  2 года назад +2

      Thank you! So glad you found the boxes as I love mine too. Being able to pack everything up easily is important to me. Regarding keeping your space clean, I don't find I create a ridiculous amount of dust when I work, but of course the room does get dusty. I normally work beside an open window for some ventilation. Other than that a damp cloth to wipe down surfaces and mop out the room regularly. I'm not the cleanest person in the world! So I guess it doesn't bother me too much :-)

    Im a beginner at pastels, I only have some Faber Castel Pitt pastel pencils (because that's all i could afford.)
    I don't have much money at all, Im a teen, and i only have a very low-paying job in which i only do one hour of per week (i earn about $30 Australian dollars every two weeks) so I am very much on a budget.
    I bought the pencils without doing enough research, and i don't have enough money to afford proper good quality pastel paper, so I have resorted to making my own (just out of gesso on watercolour paper)
    Hopefully, with the tools i do have, i can create pet portraits to sell so that i can eventually get better paper and soft pastel sticks for larger artworks.
    I love your videos!

      That's the way to do it! Get yourself started however you can and add to your materials as you go. I did the same at the start buying 1 or 2 of the nice Unison pastels when I would visit a local art shop. You don't have to have it all at once, work your way there. And actually the home made surfaces are great to work on.

I am a complete newbie, but am so fasinated by your expertese your exquissitness, your talent and your great easy to follow tutorials. So I will be binge watching now - I am flashed at what is possible. I have Farber polychromos and Derwent intense pencils and a wee pkt of Gallery Artists soft oil pastels. Which would be the better pencils to use, both are beautiful to use? Extra paper, I have not yet got. The rest I have to watch lol. I am so looking forward to it. I would love to draw animals, but will have to see. I have bad hands, so I hope it will be possible for me.

    Your work is absolutely stunning... a question... what do you use for sharpening your pencils. I have tried many crank sharpeners and have now resorted to using a scalpel blade and sandpaper!

    • @EmmaColbertArt
      @EmmaColbertArt  5 лет назад

      I've always used a scalpel! I just prefer it. If I were a pencil artist with hundreds of pencils to sharpen I might feel differently, but for a few it's fine. I have much more control over how sharp I want it.

    Thank you, Emma! This was one of the clearest explanations about pastels I've heard. A question if you have time. You prefer the Pitt Faber Castells and also use Carbothellos. May I ask why you prefer the Pitts? I'm going out to buy my first set and want quality so am exploring one that gets me the most detail and is high in pigment. Would appreciate any tips, and thank you in advance! 😊

    • @EmmaColbertArt
      @EmmaColbertArt  3 года назад +1

      Thank you! I like the Pitts and Carbothellos and Caran d'Ache as they're all reasonably soft, but can take a blade to sharpen them nicely. I just happen to have more of the Pitts, but I'm liking the small number of Caran d'Ache I have.

    • @EmmaColbertArt
      @EmmaColbertArt  23 дня назад

      Hi Alex, (sorry for the slow reply, my answer to you accidentally tagged someone else!)
      You will inevitably discover some extra colours you might need along the way. But it's totally possible to get going with what you have. I started with Conte crayons and cheap Inscribe pastels. Once you get a feel for the medium and if you really like it, it's easier then to know what you want to buy or upgrade to. What is probably even more important than the pastels, is the paper. Getting a decent paper is the big moment of progress most people go through. The cheap thin papers just don't work well if you want to create detail. Have a go at one of my free tutorials here on RUclips as that will let you see how they go. Good luck!

    Hi Emma. I am just starting with soft pastels and seeking advice how to deal with the dust. I have purchased a cheap set of soft pastels and they create a lot of dust. Do you wear a mask or use any other protection against the dust? Would more expensive pastels produce less dust?

    • @EmmaColbertArt
      @EmmaColbertArt  2 года назад

      Hi Paul, It's likely that it's the paper you're using that creates most of the dust. Also it is true that cheaper pastels will also add to the problem. But I'd say try some different papers first. There is a great trial pack at the following link. www.jacksonsart.com/sanded-pastel-paper-comparison-pack-of-7-quarter-sheets?___store=jacksonsart_en&acc=087408522c31eeb1f982bc0eaf81d35f

      I don't see why not but I don't think the pencils will go on top of the pastel as easily as the pastel pencils which are the same medium and easier to mix. It depends on your style really. If you want to layer up, pastel pencils are best for combining with the soft sticks I would think.
