  • Mala Waldron, vocals, piano
    Herman Burney, bass
    Nasar Abadey, drums
During a performance at the Kennedy Center (March 2017) Mala Waldron paid tribute to her father (Mal Waldron) and godmother, Billie Holiday by performing "Left Alone," a composition Waldron and Holiday wrote together on a flight during the period when Mal was touring with Billie as her pianist.
As fate would have it, Mal would be Ms. Holiday's last accompanist before her passing in 1959. During the years they worked together the two became close friends, and in fact, Billie became godmother to Mal and wife, Elaine's first child together, Mala.
This performance took place on the Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Ctr and was co-sponsored by CAAPA (Coalition for African American Artists in the Performing Arts.)

Just had the pleasure of meeting Mala and hearing her perform at the Jazz Loft here on Long Island. Mala is a real treat to listen to. She played a set list of tunes that were very special to her including Left Alone. She engaged the audience and told a lot about herself and her musical influences.

Where's the love that's made to fill my heart?
Where's the one from whom i'll never part?
First they hurt me, then desert me
    I'm left alone, all alone
There's no house that i can call my home
There's no place from which i'll never roam
Town or city, it's a pity
    I'm left alone, all alone
Seek and find they always say
But up to now it's not that way
Maybe fate has let him pass me by
Or perhaps we'll meet before i die
Hearts will open, but until then
    I'm left alone, all alone

    So very beautiful & moving.
Mal Waldron's contributions to music were very important, an significant influence on some of the most original music of the 20th century, including Mingus, Dolphy, & Booker Little. He could play with anybody. Listening to his rehearsals with Billie Holiday years ago was amazing. And, of course, this song is a masterpiece.
It's not surprising that he had such a deeply musical daughter. Mala's mother must have been really something.

My god... Thank you so much Mala. This tribute is so touching... It brought tears to my eyes. Your father's songs are so much incredibly beautiful and on sad days they really seem like mirages sometimes... And your voice is equally beutiful. Now I can only feel thankful for finding out your account and your own songs! My deepest admiration from Brazil!
