The fact that Mariner is actually tempted to go look at the warp core with Jennifer and Brahams isn't just a cute innuendo but showing off the warp core to Tendi was one of the first things Boimler did during his ship tour in the first episode and Mariner mocked him for it. The oddest thing this season is Boimler being immune to any form of seduction. on the raisin farm, he deflected obvious flirts like a chad...and here instead of being tempted by sex, he is tempted by recognition. While his friends deepest desires are sexual, Boimler just wants someone to think he is worthy. It is sweet, and a bit sad.
boimler wants to be a legend like other starfleet legends like archer, picard, kirk, sisko, etc. basically who doesn't want to be the hero or sueprhero where you get a ticker tape parade down madison avenue.
I feel like they kinda nodded to his lack of interest/obliviousness to sex in the previous episode, too, because I can't think of any other reason why they'd elect to have a whole scene of him having a conversation with Tendi while she sits in his bunk in nothing but a towel except for him to not at all react to it.

Interestingly, this scene pretty much clinches that there is no romantic tension between Mariner and Boimler. They are just friends. When he sees Mariner has a thing for Jennifer, far from being jealous, he thinks it's adorable. I am relieved. I don't ever want to see Mariner and Boimler hook up. That'd be awful.
Now Tendi and Rutherford, on the other hand, I would love to see get together. They are consistently kind to each other, mutually supportive, and never mask their feelings through a veneer of toxic behavior. And they share a deep love of science that means they can share goals and enthusiasms for the rest of their lives and never grow apart: the perfect couple.
Mariner's love-hate crush turned regular crush on Jennifer is quite a nice funny and cute sub-plot. Can't blame her for crushing though, Jennifer looks gorgeous. 👍 I don't know why, but "siren-type creature trying to charm cast members" is one of the potential plots for an episode of a series that I kinda enjoy. I think it'd be pretty interesting if Mariner's problems didn't have a specific root. I think in real life, it's possible to develop these kinds of negative traits even without being able to point at one or two specific things and saying "here's where it all went wrong." But that mindset, focusing on smaller problems and treating them like the cause of the rest, can be useful not only for real actual mental therapy but is also an effective storytelling tool where you can dedicate an episode or two to revisiting past events. Explaining exactly why things were the way they were in ep1 is a great way to get your audience reengaged with your story, encourages them to go back and rewatch, and makes them feel smarter for seeing connections. But while those concepts are nice in their places of healing and entertaining people, I think the idea that you NEED some big traumatic event to have trauma symptoms (or at least to need therapy) is super harmful to millions of people who should at least see a therapist annually but think "meh I've got nothing worth complaining about." I think it'd feel cheap if it turned out Mariner had actually been through something truly horrible before ep 1 since the show is supposedly about some of the more mundane parts of the universe. Maybe she just decided she didn't like the self image she had of being valedictorian. Maybe she felt pressure from her parents to keep being the best and decided to show them she would do what she wanted. Or maybe it's even more mundane than that--sometimes people just start feeling depressed for literally no reason at all other than Brain Chemistry.

I think she's still furious he had sent her to the brig with the sleeves pretext, instead of kissing her. 😁 Their sickbay scene was hilarious. I think he got scared ( he later mentioned having violent ex-es and was probably trying to make healthier choices) and sent her to the brig with the pretext of sleeves. Later, even after her parents gave him full power over her, he never noticed the sleeves again and she kept them up. She also reacted violently to his rejection, despite the brig being " her favorite place" and promised to " dace in his blood ". 😂 Ironically, this unhinged reaction made him more attracted to her. Then she bragged to her visiting captain friend Ramsey that she had put a scorpion in his bed that nearly killed him, and he didn't report or punished her for that. He's either too forgiving or he has feelings for her. Throughout the series they both tried to hide their attraction to each other because they think it's inappropriate, but repressed things tend to grow stronger, that's why he is scared she is back in the season 3 finale. Anyway, she can't help herself to tell her friends how she went out of her way to upset or confront him ever since the first episode, bumps into him intentionally (she did it with Jennifer too, she has patterns), drinks from his glass (when she tells him, Shax and Billups about her mother's secret promotion), shows jealousy to Churrolivia 😂, gets angry when she praised him for saving the engineers from the volcano people ,but he thought she was not sincere, although she was, etc. He forgave her a lot and only punished her as a last resort or that only time when he got scared of involving himself with another violent woman. I was surprised he did her the favor of removing Boimler from a dangerous mission just because she came smiling to him and asked him a favor, using his given name Jack. A, and when her mother kicked her out of the ship, he weakly tried to postpone the captain 's decision, despite thinking her guilty, which is the most anyone on the ship had done for her, including her friends and Jennifer. Jen really betrayed her there. A, even when he was struck with strange energies ,while rushing to save her, and became god-like, he never punished her, despite reading in her mind that she thought him stupid. He even tried to eat the ship, lol, but never touched her. He can't help bragging when she's around, doing gym moves and giving personal info in their talks, like showing her a photo of his friends ,while talking about Boimler 's clone's death. Now that she promised to be his shadow and is set to "avenge " his control over her in season 3, and he is rightly scared of what she would do, I bet they will have many more funny interactions.

I was honestly expecting Rutherford's sexual desire to be tendi. You know considering he used to have a huge crush on her before he lost all his memories. That or that freaky yellow triangular tutorial program he made as a nightmare. Memories aren't truly forgotten. Even if Rutherford's brain is part machine. The part that's organic still has his old memories that were lost buried deep within his subconscious.

You know I really like how the fact that she likes ladies isn’t even something that they think is unusual. I don’t mean like there accepting of it. I mean like they don’t care at all and don’t see it as any different then any straight relationship. Really shows how far humanity has come in Star Trek
This show is obviously made by people who love both Star Trek and animation-they've captured the former's positivity in a way that's been missing from the franchise for over 20 years, and they've gone from Rick and Morty knockoff animation to having some decent spring, stretch, and squash in their characters which R&M still generally lacks.

This show is such a great little surprise. I never would have imagined "Adult Swim Star Trek" could work, but when I put on the first episode out of morbid curiosity at what an embarrassment it surely must be I ended up binging the whole season in one sitting. Eagerly wait for every new season now.

The last bit was a callback, too. The fact that Mariner is actually tempted to go look at the warp core with Jennifer and Brahams isn't just a cute innuendo but showing off the warp core to Tendi was one of the first things Boimler did during his ship tour in the first episode and Mariner mocked him for it. For all her being too cool for school, Mariner is just as big a Star Trek nerd as the others.

I understood that the orbs showed the latest fantasy and later nightmare. If it were not so, Mariner and Rutheford would have seen other people they were attracted to, in time, and Boimler would have seen that lt.Barbara he had dated last season, the one Mariner suspected had bad intentions.

Usually the type of information you keep filed away for people you're close to. It's honestly kind of interesting how she both really wants and really fears being in a committed relationship that goes long-term.

Well, I'm glad that Mariner has a healthy interest for once ! Jennifer is calm, smart and has saved her life. I think it'd be pretty interesting if Mariner's problems didn't have a specific root. I think in real life, it's possible to develop these kinds of negative traits even without being able to point at one or two specific things and saying "here's where it all went wrong." But that mindset, focusing on smaller problems and treating them like the cause of the rest, can be useful not only for real actual mental therapy but is also an effective storytelling tool where you can dedicate an episode or two to revisiting past events. Explaining exactly why things were the way they were in ep1 is a great way to get your audience reengaged with your story, encourages them to go back and rewatch, and makes them feel smarter for seeing connections. But while those concepts are nice in their places of healing and entertaining people, I think the idea that you NEED some big traumatic event to have trauma symptoms (or at least to need therapy) is super harmful to millions of people who should at least see a therapist annually but think "meh I've got nothing worth complaining about."
I think it'd feel cheap if it turned out Mariner had actually been through something truly horrible before ep 1 since the show is supposedly about some of the more mundane parts of the universe. Maybe she just decided she didn't like the self image she had of being valedictorian. Maybe she felt pressure from her parents to keep being the best and decided to show them she would do what she wanted. Or maybe it's even more mundane than that--sometimes people just start feeling depressed for literally no reason at all other than Brain Chemistry.

I think he got scared ( he later mentioned having violent ex-es and was probably trying to make healthier choices) and sent her to the brig with the pretext of sleeves. Later, even after her parents gave him full power over her, he never noticed the sleeves again and she kept them up. She also reacted violently to his rejection, despite the brig being " her favorite place" and promised to " dace in his blood ". 😂 Ironically, this unhinged reaction made him more attracted to her. Then she bragged to her visiting captain friend Ramsey that she had put a scorpion in his bed that nearly killed him, and he didn't report or punished her for that. He's either too forgiving or he has feelings for her. Throughout the series they both tried to hide their attraction to each other because they think it's inappropriate, but repressed things tend to grow stronger, that's why he is scared she is back in the season 3 finale. Anyway, she can't help herself to tell her friends how she went out of her way to upset or confront him ever since the first episode, bumps into him intentionally (she did it with Jennifer too, she has patterns), drinks from his glass (when she tells him, Shax and Billups about her mother's secret promotion), shows jealousy to Churrolivia 😂, gets angry when she praised him for saving the engineers from the volcano people ,but he thought she was not sincere, although she was, etc. He forgave her a lot and only punished her as a last resort or that only time when he got scared of involving himself with another violent woman. I was surprised he did her the favor of removing Boimler from a dangerous mission just because she came smiling to him and asked him a favor, using his given name Jack. A, and when her mother kicked her out of the ship, he weakly tried to postpone the captain 's decision, despite thinking her guilty, which is the most anyone on the ship had done for her, including her friends and Jennifer. Jen really betrayed her there. A, even when he was struck with strange energies ,while rushing to save her, and became god-like, he never punished her, despite reading in her mind that she thought him stupid. He even tried to eat the ship, lol, but never touched her. He can't help bragging when she's around, doing gym moves and giving personal info in their talks, like showing her a photo of his friends ,while talking about Boimler 's clone's death. Now that she promised to be his shadow and is set to "avenge " his control over her in season 3, and he is rightly scared of what she would do, I bet they will have many more funny interactions.

And just to cover bases, it is unlikely that such romantic (re-)interest will happen with [LD s03], not with the *Dark* Foreshadowing behind Rutherford's cybernetic implants from *[LD 2x10 - "First First Contact"].* Perhaps in [LD s04]... *;)*

However, despite having the metaphorical "chemistry" between them, Rutherford ultimately decided to not romantically pursue Barnes further.
2. *[LD 2x01 - "Strange Energies"] ~* After Rutherford's critical head/brain injuries of *[LD 1x10 - "No Small Parts"],* which resulted in Rutherford losing roughly a year's worth of memories, Rutherford went on +2 more dates with Barnes (dates total = 04). The 'catch' being that Rutherford *_did not remember_* the first two (2) dates; however, Barnes understood this and was amicable to a "reboot" of their dating. In the end of [LD 2x01], Rutherford again declined to romantically pursue Barnes further, partly due to Tendi's insistence (which of course, [Rutherford + Tendi] 'shipper fans leapt upon). Fortunately, Barnes also understood that Rutherford was still in-process of recovering his memories and brain damage, so again remained cordial/friendly with Rutherford.
3. *[LD 3x05 - "Reflections"] ~* Now, with the past-Rutherford persona having seriously insulted Barnes (literally having made Barnes cry), while in control of present-Rutherford's body, it is unknown (as of [LD 3x05]) whether that was the final death knell of any further romantic opportunities between Rutherford and Barnes.
4. *_Fun Trivia_** ~* The lovely Jessica McKenna also performs as the USS Cerritos Computer-voice for ST:LD. So it is unlikely McKenna, and thus Barnes, will be going anywhere, anytime soon. At least, not for [LD seasons 03-04]. *;)*
