In this Joker And The Thief guitar lesson, I will show you note-for-note how to play this guitar driven hit from Wolfmother.
You will need to tune your guitar to dropped "D" for this one. That will be starting from the 6th string D A D G B E.
The intro to "Joker And The Thief" is perhaps the most recognizable riff of the song and you will hear it constantly at sporting events all over the world. This riff sounds a lot more complicated than it actually is to play. In reality it consists of a simple hammer-on lick played on two adjacent strings over and over again.
This kind of a guitar lick can create a sort of hypnotic effect especially when the harmony comes in with the organ. It is a pretty cool effect as well.
The main riff of the song kicks in after this intro and consists of power chords played in a tight rhythmic fashion across the 4-6 strings. Pay close attention to the picking in this part of the lesson as well as the left hand muting to make sure you give this riff it's punchy sound. You will also want to make note of the two different endings of this riff.
Beyond these riffs I will also cover the guitar solo. This solo is pretty simple to play and is just a melodic figure that is then repeated an octave higher. The end of the solo is a bit more erratic containing some guitar overdubs. I will cover both of those parts as well.
I hope you guys enjoy this one!
    Carl...

Nice! Definitely wasn't expecting to see Wolfmother on here. They are criminally underrated.

Hi. Thanks for the lesson, I found it very accurate. Just one thing that maybe you can answer: I was never able to find out how he really does the sound in the part that you start explaining at 10:20. It sounds to me that he kind of palm mutes, or scratch the string, using at the same time maybe the pickups switch, or a kill switch....or something like this...

Wolf mother started with 3 members after the first album the bass player and drummer left , the bass player switches between bass and what I could only assume is an electric modified organ and those nearly sounds your looking for are from that bass player . Search the big day out vids to understand what I’m talking about

Easy to learn but there ain’t a couple of guitars at the end of the solo infact it’s on guitar and the bass player on an organ manipulating some awsome sounds at the same time plus a wicked small piece of distortion, I seen em live and if you get an Oppertunity to see how it’s done live you’ll also notice the double hammer ons are only done on the guitar at the start ( intro ) the rest of them are done by the bass player again on the organ whilst the guitar goes on to some bar chords. However playing it the way this is shown here you’ll be able to read create it in a way no one else could pick the difference. Wolf mother changed band members several times but the original bass player was the epic sound that made it great after there first album both the bass player and drummer left and wolf mother in my opinion wasn’t worth listening to but that’s my own opinion ( sorry I’m bad with names which is why I just call them as there instrument) this song is great for beginners to really step it up as those Double hammer ons really give your fingers a work out 💪
