  • Taking part in the RSGB 2m Backpackers contest from the SOTA summit of Red Screes (G/LD-017, 6 points). I was in the Lake District on holiday and had a free pass from the YL, so what else to do other than climb a SOTA summit and take part in some VHF contesting?

Thanks Darryl, it was a fun day! Neil XZZ was a good signal, certainly better than when I've worked him from down here in my home square of IO91 :)

I really enjoyed this video, very interesting. Am I able to take part in these activities as a foundation class callsign? Kind regards, Karl: MW6TBI.

Hi Karl, thanks for the kind words. You can definitely take part in both SOTA and contesting with a foundation license, as long as you remain within the restrictions of your license (i.e. limit power to 10 watts or less). It seems like you're well located too in Swansea, you are within striking distance of some cracking VHF SOTA summits in the Brecon Beacons. Pen-Y-Fan on 2m FM is always quite an experience!

M0JCQ's Ham Radio Channel Ran up that mound more times than I care to remember, (23yrs in the Army). I think I’ll need to look into the power supply aspect for SOTA. This side of the hobby i.e. working from hill tops, really appeals to be. Reminds me of my days on 11m DX’ing with the Charlie Tango boys. We all cut our teeth somewhere. Many thanks for the reply buddy. Stay safe. 👍🏻

@@ct026 well it sounds like you'll take to it like a duck to water! I wasn't a CBer, but the CT group does interest me, very similar really.
In terms of power, I made a video on what I personally use:
      ruclips.net/video/_1N10vt08GI/видео.html
LiFePo technology is what most of us seem to be using for SOTA, it's much lighter (than SLAB) and safer (than LiPo).

Hi James, thanks for sharing your contest experience - it looked like a fun day! How do you create the QSO map at the end please? Thanks, Mark M0PVM

It was a good day of playing radio from a mountain top :)
The QSO Map is something which is generated automatically when you update your contest log to the RSGB website. I always find it interesting to look at.

Great video. This is something I want to get into. How do I find my locator number and what's the other number you mentioned ie 022?
