Someone loses a Tenor Drumstick! Look at 1:36 between the union flag and the tree - whoops! Bloody brilliant though, I wish I was there, these guys are the very best - so smart. My favourite tune is Gibraltar 03:16
Yep, very unfortunate, especially as it happened at the very beginning of the performance. However, he carried on with tenor-drum stick movements as though he had the two sticks with him. Well Done that guy. Professional. SuperNutkin.
I’ve seen many ‘beating of retreat’ by the Royal Marines over the years, was a Navy wife in 1971-1977. My hubby is a Fleet Air Arm Veteran of 12 years. My Great Great Grandfather was a Marine in the Crimean War. So proud of our Military🇬🇧🏴 and our country. God Save our Queen. Excellent parade thank you.
One of the factors, aside from their precision, is that each instrument or group of instruments is never dominated by others but rather enhanced holistically in their own time and place. Excellent video.
I must tell you that I have a few decades as a musician, both military and civilian. There are so many superb musical organizations in the world today--a miracle in itself given the feelings regarding music education these days. I can think of at least ten military marching units that could easily vie for being the very best in the world. In my personal, and in my professional opinion, if Her Majesty's Massed Bands of the Royal Marines were in such a competition, whenever they were in that competition, they would win it...EVERY time. To my mind, this is THE BEST military musical organization in the world today. This performance simply amplifies that opinion. Oh, how I do love this band! A Yank said that, with utmost admiration and respect to every member. THANK YOU!
Allways think the RM are much snappier than the guards regiments... I’m taking nothing away from the guards trooping but the Royal Marines are just the real deal
I salute your heartfelt appreciation. As a former Royal Navy Officer when you were on parade and the Royal Marine Band played you stood an inch taller, your back straighter. At mess dinners you would appreciate their skills, at Balls and at the Officer College (Dartmouth) they were amazing...Beat the retreat would bring watery eyes and immense pride. I have also seen them parade in the US, and seeing sacred American places Arlington or other parts within DC or further afield allowing the Royal Marine band to parade is the greatest compliment an ally and friend can pay, it was honouring the martial bond and shared culture. We repaid the compliment here to the US Marine Corp here (3mins onwards)...ruclips.net/video/zXcmW7CgmWwt/видео.html=180s
Roya Marines Band Service is the ONLY be the Best in the World. OK, I accept that I am biased my being a former Royal Marines Band Service Product of some Three Years Training at the Royal Marines School of Music in Deal Kent, and we were located in East Barracks, Cold and Draaugty Barrack Rooms where we had a Coal Burning Fire at one end of the barrack room and it was always freezing. Could have done with some female company to keep us warm during those Cold Easterly Winds off the North Sea...... ha ha.
Well Done the Royal Marines ,,,, one of the finest displays ever, especially when the massed bands split into FIVE individual bands ,,,,,, wow ,,,, awesome.
This is amazing, simple as. The magnificent playing, the precision, the choreography. I can't begin to imagine the hard work and effort & dedication that goes into putting a performance like this together. Hairs on the back of the neck stuff from start to finish. And oh my god, the drum line! Absolutely superb in performance every way. HM Royal Marines Band, the creme de la creme of all military bands. Brilliant.
This ridiculous! How do you get THIS good? When were this enormous number of musicians able to rehearse together? So, so proud of the discipline, dedication and self-belief that enabled the musicians to get out there and perform to this standard. In awe.
It took the massed bands about 3 days to put the whole display together! They are all professional soldiers and Musicans who train every day!! It was an amazing display!!
OK Corps of Drums, you have just had me clapping in my lounge! Just a bit wonderful! Me, HMS St Vincent bugle band 1960-1961and proud! Go Royals, the Worlds best, bar NONE!
My father fought as a royal Marine, from 47 to 54,, alongside NZ silent tigers,, and Ghurkas.. he had great respect for both,, he was a fortunate survivor, unlike many of his comrades,, i have many photos, including hiw wedding,, in his Marine Dress Uniform,,, greetings to NZ,,, Kia Ora,
These guys also complete an infantry teaining course of 16 weeks. Basically the initial stages of commando training. We love our bandies, always felt such a privilege to be marching behind them.
Beating the Retreat is often wrongly) interpreted amongst civilians. It is not the surrender or the forward troops, it is the call for forward troops to return to the safety of the fort for the night.
I've often heard it said that there are no bands that can compare with the Secret Drum Corps. However, it should be understood that the SDC are a CIVILIAN band in entirety - i.e. they are not part of any armed services, They are superb masters of their art, and you can't get away from that. The RM Band on the other hand, are serving soldiers, and their time is taken up with the usual forms of military training, their additional roles as "First Aiders" etc, then their Band practices along with marching while playing. All British military bands carry out the same drill and processes, so in that context the SDC are not on the same playing field. I happen to be a great lover and follower of military bands, and while there isn't much to choose between them for their music, none of them really compare overall with the skill levels produced by the Royal Marines - and I include the armed troops (the Regiment, Companies or Platoons in that assessment. In general, their formations and turnout are impeccable. Nevertheless, they are all human, and it's only on a very rare occasion one can find a mishap. It's also true to say that any bandsman or infantryman who drops something or misses a step is due a proper "dressing-down" by his commander. I don't know the system as it is today, but 20 or 30 years ago, such mishaps could earn one a day in "jankers!" Precision is the order of the day, and I would agree with other comments on this, that not even the Guards have that level. Inthe clip shown before this one, I watched the RM Band, Portsmouth leading a troop of sailors off in Australia; the band was precision personified, but the sailors were a complete and utter tragedy - many completely out of step, some still adjusting their headgear, and overall, a woeful, unmilitary shameful bunch; but that's the Navy for you; marching is not their No1 priority.
Question for a Marine Band expert: It seems that the main band uniforms have a red stripe down the leg while the drum corps does not. WHY? Also, why do the base and tenor drummers wear leopard capes while snare drummers do not. Just curious. These bands go back probably over two hundred years…..and there are historical reasons over who must wear what. Besides looking sharp as hell, this to me is the premier military marching band in the world. Their sound and marching precision are unequaled.
All the flags of the commonwealth are flown down the mall and on Horse Guards Approach during the Queens Birthday Parade Season at the end of May/early June.

Monty Zumazoom WOW! I hadnt noticed that before untill you mentioned it!
I just saw a flash of white so had a closer look!
Yep, very unfortunate, especially as it happened at the very beginning of the performance. However, he carried on with tenor-drum stick movements as though he had the two sticks with him. Well Done that guy. Professional. SuperNutkin.
He might have had another mallet in a stich pouch on the side/back of his drum.
Top Secret Drum Corps always lose a few sticks during their performances. They do have a pouch with replacements on board - I think it is expected!

The Tenor Drummer at 17:57 is well keeping to the plan, in spite of losing the left hand drum stick. Brilliant fortitude!

Brilliant performance as usual, they make it look so easy. Excellent filming, shame about the person in front of you being rather tall.
Is the Band Major at 15:28 doing a ‘Goose-step’? What’s that move for? Amazingly done
It is used to move the band during a ‘wheel mouser’ and usually only used during Massed Band Drill.
Nobody on the planet does this like the RM
Oh my God!
Horse guards parade 💂🇬🇧

One day there will be a cameraman who will stop swinging the camera around and remain on the subject for several minutes and not give us a headache.
Wow the new zealand and the Australian flags are in the back ground
All the flags of the commonwealth are flown down the mall and on Horse Guards Approach during the Queens Birthday Parade Season at the end of May/early June.
That's because, despite what some stirrers on RUclips will say, we do NOT forget. (Also, the Canadian flag).
