    Such a great line up! Love the improvements! I hope BMW remains focused on quality and reliability, at that price point, these machines should have minimal down time and recalls. Hope to get one soon but my practicality and fear of breaking down after or without warranty really holds me up.

    Ah, finally the updates we’ve really been waiting for... Forget making it 50 kg lighter-everyone knows that complex lights and electronics is precisely what you want an off-road bike...
    The GS is gradually transforming from an athletic and capable dual sport bike to an obese and electronic gadgets dependent behemoth.
    If BMW doesn’t stop this madness, I predict that in 5 years a freaking Goldwing is gonna be more off-road capable than a GS...

    • @Radio_180
      @Radio_180 4 года назад +3

      Fred Neck
      I know, I know... It’s just sad to see what originally was a capable adventure bike slowly turning into the motorcycle equivalent of a luxury SUV.
      Sure, an 850 GS, 790 Adv, Africa Twin-or basically any bike that doesn’t make an elephant seem light-would perform so much better in the dirt. It’s just, I miss the old, rugged GS. But I should probably just quit complaining and wining, get with the times and get myself a proper dual-sport instead...

    • @arnarne
      @arnarne 4 года назад +1

      @@Radio_180 Which year of GS do you think was the peak, as an adventure bike? I am curious as I got the 2010 year model myself. I can see your point but at the same time, living in a cold climate, I wouldn't mind being able to stretching out the riding season with that heated seat! I am not saying you are wrong though.

    • @Radio_180
      @Radio_180 4 года назад +2

      arnarne
      Honestly, if we’re talking about the “big” GS-i.e. the ones with a boxer engine, as opposed to the “smaller” GS with a parallel twin-I think that the GS line peaked at the 1150. It was durable, rugged, comfortable, and relatively light (when compared to the newer models the 1150 is about 50 kg lighter).
      If we’re talking the 1200 range, I think it peaked at the last model years (2012 / 2013 for the GS and GSA respectively) of the air cooled engine. 2013 (GS) and 2014 (GSA) onward were “upgraded” with a water cooled engine. Sure, with better cooling you can squeeze more power out of the engine-but at the same time, if a pebble/rock damages your radiator, your trip is over.

    • @arnarne
      @arnarne 4 года назад +1

      Adam B Thank you. Interesting. I have never ridden an 1150 but I see them sometimes and I certainly like the look of them. I am very happy with my 1200 gsa 2010 although I understand that earlier and newer models have their advantages/disadvantages compared to my bike. If I could afford it I wouldn't mind having about ten completely different bikes in the garage!

    The 2020 model is a great bike. I did a South Africa of-road trip of 4000km with it and got to know the bike pretty well. The drive by wire adjustable gas response is my favorite feature. But I think there is an overkill in the number of modes and who wants an eco mode? Why?
    Another simple but great feature is the double-pull-handbrake function. That came in handy many times.
    For a 40 year anniversary model, the colour scheme is lame and it should have something really really special so it would have turned into a must have.
    The hand-guards are still the simple plastic breakable stuff they are using for years now. This heavy bike is going to kiss the ground many times in of road use. Barkbuster type of guards would have been a good thing. Same for the mirrors, make them foldable.
    The risers for the footrests and handle bar is good, but why isn't that a vario integrated design that can be adjusted without tools? Adjusting the bike set up to your type of body should be essential and should be variable to either sitting or standing position.
    I can't tell from this video but it looks like the side stand still has this little ground plate? that almost any rider who goes of-road or camping has upgraded with a larger one.
    And has the new '21 model finally a mid-stand that is not rattling underneath the bike when riding of-road?
    For those who see the weight as a problem. Yes its a heavy bike but let me assure you that with a bit of practice and or of road training, you will be surprised. I can lift it by myself when dropped and I only struggle with the weight when the engine is off :)
    This said i would love to see a boxer with a smaller engine (the power of 1200 & 1250 is redundant), less electronics, less weight (yes I know), 100% rider ergonomics adjustable and in adventure model only. That would be a real 40 year anniversary model.
    All this aside, it is an awesome bike!

    All you need is a sky hook with block and tackle to stand it back up if you drop it in the dirt ..or a helicopter sky crane. on speed dial ...back in 2012 I test rode the BMW 800 parallel twin that handled very much as good as an XR600R I used to have ..and the fuel tank of the 800 BMW was under the seat was pretty cool ! ..as it was more designed for off road as so was the seat that wasn't made to set on for very long as it was built just like the CR250R motocross Honda that is like setting on a 2x4 ..at the same dealer that day I rode the triumph tiger 800XC adventure bike that for all practical purposes I haven't ridden anything better as it has a seat you can tour on and with 95hp will lift the front wheel in 3rd just by twisting the throttle ..and it handled the white river road through Indy like a dirt tracker eating up pot holes and loose gravel in the broken paved / dirt road corners along the the river bank...the dry weight of the triumph tiger 800 XC is around 470 - 480 lbs with a wide window of side to side balance ..but doesn't hold a lot of fuel , maybe four gallons ?

    Drivers are confusing the amber day light running lights for a turn signal, this is dangerous. I thought that permanently amber/orange running lights are illegal in the U.K. and an MOT failure? They should be clear or white lights, a recall might be necessary for modification. Just a thought! And no illuminated switches, owners have been asking for this for twenty years.

    Having the places and skills to ride this (or any capable bike) off the paved roads is the first requirement. Many that buy this bike want it just for road riding and what this bike has to offer for them is great.
    My pig 1994 GS 1150 was first a road machine, secondly dirt road, lastly dual track capable.
    For pure off-road the KTM 450 was the right tool for me, but it required trucking it to the place to ride.
    My bike of necessity now is a Honda CRF250M. The ultimate urban assault vehicle, perfect for these tight mountain roads and very capable of off-road.
    If I was living in the US, EU or Aus I would definitely be riding a GS.

      I am 5'7 with a 30inch inseam and ride a 2017 BMW GS800 with low suspension and low seat. When I sat on a new 1250 GSA with low seat and low suspension, I found that it was even lower to the ground than my GS800. If you've not ridden an adventure bike before, understand that there is a learning curve to get comfortable without feet flat on the ground when at a stop. If you already have experience on an adventure bike, you should be fine on the low 1250 GSA. I hope to buy one in the next 12 months myself.

    For me really disappointing, I honestly thought for the 40th year edition there would be something really meaningful and all BMW delivered was a bunch of ‘fluff’. Really an eco mode on a 1250cc motorcycle, fuel economy is not what a customer purchasing a bike of this size is looking for. BMW is moving this bike further and further away from the GS spirit and into a huge beast that pretends to have off-road ability. Weight reduction BMW is what you need not more hardly used electronics. WEIGHT REDUCTION will bring huge value to your customers.

      I find that these bikes are ten times more capable than the average to experienced rider. I don’t own one but have ridden one. It was so light and responsive and I didn’t think it would be. The GSA is a very capable off roader, in fact one of the most capable in its class, maybe second only to the slightly smaller KTM’s. I’ve been watching and studying this machine for over a decade, if you do your research and maybe take some training courses, you would retract a majority of your statement. I don’t care about the modes, but I do care about fuel economy and capacities because that’s what an adventure rider needs even if they don’t know it yet. When I’m 30 or 40 miles from nowhere and almost out of fuel, efficiency and peace of mind really relaxes the mind.
