I love watching you garden as you do it so well. The new puppy is so cute as well. Thank you for another amazing video. Blessings to you and the family. September 13 is my son's birthday, and he just turned 49. Be happy and healthy and stay safe.
You are an amazing gardener. My daughter who lives in Richmond Virginia has been growing artichokes and they don’t look nearly as beautiful as yours, and you live in Alaska.
The garden looks so lush and beautiful. Your little helper stole the show. I'm amazed that you can grow artichokes. I've seen so many others try and fail. Right now they cost $2.59 each, by Thanksgiving they'll be close to $5.00 and small.
Experiment. I sure hope that the celery does what you expect. It's amazing how big it got!! I don't have the patience and I cut mine all too soon. I enjoy them little, dehydrated, so I can put it all in soups and the like. I even made celery salt this spring from what I grew last year. Garden is still looking lovely, Jessica! :)
I made a red onion and cranberry jam once. It was one you stored in the fridge. Delicious on cheese and dry biscuits. If you use oven cleaner on your cast iron enamel pot. It will bring it up like brand new. Such a cute helper you had.
A neighbor of mine has artichoke plants that came to the USA in the early 1900’s, brought by his wife’s family from Italy. They produce each year in spring-summer and “sleep” during fall and winter. 😊Hope you can save yours.
You are an amazing gardener. My daughter who lives in Richmond Virginia has been growing artichokes and they don’t look nearly as beautiful as yours, and you live in Alaska. I think a very positive aspect of growing a garden in Alaska is the maybe you don’t have all the bugs that we have here in Maryland.. if that’s the case counter blessings because I was inundated by vine boars, stink bugs, cabbage worms, and if that wasn’t enough, I got Wilt that killed all my tomato plants and then comes the powdery mildew which finished off that was still alive. Granite I was able to harvest potatoes, some tomatoes, some peppers, green beans, one acorn squash, three spaghetti, squash, and mini of the butter baby butternut squash. Earlier in the season, I was able to harvest lots of lettuce spinach and I have some spring onions growing that do fantastic. I don’t know why but they’re doing great. It’s always a challenge. It’s always something so count your blessings. Your garden looks fantastic.
I caramelized some onions today, to put into two quiches I made. My quiche takes one 8oz softened cream cheese, whipped in a mixer until fluffy. I add 10-12 eggs, 1/2 cup whipping cream (milk or sour cream will work), salt, pepper, and a t. of cayenne pepper. Mix well, and pour into crust, lined with shredded cheese and caramelized onion. Cover with more cheese. For crustless quiche, I grease a pie pan, put cheese of choice on the bottom, then caramelized onions, filling, and cover with shredded cheese. Having the onions already done, would make it so much faster! I can imagine putting them over burgers or steak too! BTW my quiche turned out delicious! I made one with a crust, for me; and a crustless one for my husband, who is trying the keto diet. You can add mushrooms or spinach to the filling if desired. They bake at 350 for 25-30 minutes. They warm up really well! I almost like them reheated the next day, better than fresh from the oven.
To protect you plant for the winter, you can use the leaves and as soon as it snow, put snow on them. It will protect them from the very cold wind that would kill them. What is the name of your new puppy ? Rutabaga is not my favorite veggie because of it's strong taste. Imagine my surprised when i cut them like french fries , added some olive oil and roasted them in the oven, Love them that way. NB I have seen people who tied the leaves together so the califlower wouldn't flower. Is it possible ? Do you think you could use your onion jam and turn it into onion soup by adding some beef broth as slice of bread and cheese ? Yum
That dog is sooooo stinking cute!! Just like having another kid to raise. Jealous of that giant cauliflower. Friday the 13th are my lucky days. Sadly the bees you are seeing in your garden have been left to die. Majority of bee keepers in Alaska harvest the honey in the beginning to middle of August and leave the bees with nothing and no plans on wintering them over. We didn’t harvest till end to beginning of Sept and left 16 frames full of pollen and honey as we are wintering our bees over. We do have the wild fuzzy bubble bees that winter over but they do not give honey but they do pollenate so are valuable. More and more bee keepers are trying to winter the hives over the winters with some success it is not a easy feat.
