Would have been nice to see the photos.
@Griffin Shepherd thats just creepy man i know your just an ad or a scammer but your a ad that needs to get his shit together
I would think that was the point of a photo discussion. Some idiot did not think we needed to see them Thumbs down.
i drank every time Atiba said Hasselblad and im hammered.
He is actually a very talented photographer and pioneered the use of a leaf shutter with action sports subject matter, because back when he started 1/250th was the max for 35mm cameras. He also shoots professional athletes, and appears to be quite successful at it.
pioneered?
@@BrianMorrisPhoto yeah he's basically steve jobs.. no fr tho an iconic photographer tho
I miss this series so much. Getting master class type tips from the pros…for free….it doesn’t get better than this
I literally learnt so much I know now from this series!
You don't NEED expensive action packs to freeze action. Just buy a couple of cheap speedlights. If you gang two or more together you can power them down to get really fast flash durations while still having the same effective output as a single speedlight at full power.
Now that's a handy trick!
nothing was learned except sync speed basically...?
why can't you achieve a faster flash sync on the DLSR with a high speed sync or hyper sync with the pocketwizards? does is get a different effect?
atiba?? with this guy, who needs result photos? he's one of the best
Holy crap, blast from the past. I remember him from the tony hawk games
I can just use a t4i or my 5d mark iii in combination with a Yongnuo 568ex ii and i can sync at any speed. 1/4000 on my t4i and max of 1/8000 on my 5d mark iii. And all you need is a $100 flash.
c0pyimitati0n High speed sync shoots the flash multiple times during the exposure. Can you see ghosts on the edges when people are moving fast?
***** I haven't used it for anything besides portraits yet. But there is no ghosting or bars.
Why you need that speed for portraits? haha
+Ramon Ramos I was playing around with shooting water drops. But I did use this same setup to shoot a friend skating and it worked fine.
i have been admiring the Jefferson bros work since i was like 14, I'm 29 now. I was always the filmer/photographer of the skate group. thats how i got my start lol
Feel you.
I loved him in Street Dreams!
I agree, I find a couple of speedlites are good and versatile for what I do, but they will never really overpower the sun :( I'm thinking of getting a strobe and have been eyeing up the Einsteins because they seem like great value for money.
man bring this series back!!!
Don't waste your time watching this video, he's just saying that the faster shutter speed of the Hasselblad is better than the Canon's one, and that's it. Without a single sample photo included.
All the above mentioned cameras will give good results, assuming you don't need to enlarge them much bigger than a magazine size print.
good external flashes and wireless syncs can cost a bit too, depending the models and power output.
fortunately you guys are both right. most cameras sync at 250th or 500th on medium format film and 800th on digital medium format: however the nikon sb600 and sb800 combined with a pocket wizard trigger can trick the camera into syncing at any speed. of course at 8000th of a second you will need more then two lumeys to get a decent aperture but in theory you can have the same action freezing flash sync as that hasselblad. form personal experience my hasselblad 500c/m is just fine
A Nikon d7000 with a SB-800 flash can sync at 1/8000. I highly doubt those studio flashes can match that speed. No need for that hasselhoff camera or professional equipment. Atiba's photos can be achieved with amature equipment and a keen eye. I think his photos are awesome!!! Just wish this tutorial made more scene.
This series is great!
yeah, it talks about photography but forgot the photos.
For amateurs that want affordable ways to make decent skate pictures without the need to invest in pro equipment:
Nikon D70 dslr syncs at 1/500 (because of its electronic shutter), costs about $200 for a used body, but only has a 6mp APS-C size sensor. Lenses will be way more of an expense.
Canon Powershot G9,10,11 & 12 all sync at 1/1000, costs running from $200 for older used models and up to $500 for the latest G12, and are around 10mp, with a 1/1.7 size sensor (a bit smaller than D70).
I shoot skating as much as i can, I use a Nikon D7000 and a variety of lenses. Im looking into using flash and this video is terrible if I was to give anyone advice it would be to get out there with some flashes and learn yourself !! Thats what i did when i first started shooting DSLR.
ah okay !! where can i get some ??
okay bro im in the uk so im not sure what the price would be ?!!
High Speed Sync not available on the Nikon?
Well I did. I googled it and typed in Hasselblad H1 and that was the price I found, used of course because I guess they don't produce that model anymore. The most expensive Hasselblad I could find was the H4D-60 and thats a little over 30 Grand So??
Great advice thanx Atiba
Nd filter will help bring down the available light and will make freezing action easier
I did the research and from the looks of it, so did you =) "the only way it could is if it was on high sync speed" So yes, it is actually possible to shoot and flash that fast. Will a Hasselblad and studio flashes make these shots easier? Of course! Can you still achieve these shots with speed-lights though? HELL YEA!!!
That's my only real point I guess. Cheers!
Not a single comparison photo. That's kinda weak
Had to save it for a magazine article probably.
I love atiba
for best quality you will use the standard flash sync. The "hyper syncs" change the performance of the flash, not the speed of the shutter in your camera. Sucks but its the way the cookie crumbles
Main reason Lumedynes are used is because of their size and portability. This location used doesn't portray what these guys really go through to get their shots. I would never want to hop a school yard fence with a Broncolor pack. 200ws with a ~t.5 duration of 1/9000th of a second is usually plenty of light to get the job done. It doesn't necessarily have to overpower ambient by more than 2stops,for skating. Profoto and Broncolor bulbs cost alot more to replace when a skateboard knocks one over
im pretty sure i saw my car in the backround haha, remember seeing this when i was going to the target behind this spot
While that can be true, a lot of the time you can actually spend more on a handfull of decent speedlites than you would on a strobe. I shoot with a Paul C. Buff Einstein strobe and their Vagabond mini power pack, it ran me about $1,100 with a light stand, wireless triggers, etc. A handfull of speedlites + triggers will easily run you that, or more, and the strobe will output a lot more power at a shorter duration. You can definitely use speedlites, but I LOVE my strobe.
Hey guys, buying a new camere. Would you think a d90 is a good cam
take into mind the digital back... also those lenses arent cheap. Indeed.
This is the first video that they give Nikon some love :)
i think with the H series its 1/800. the 1/500 was for the older hasselblads, like the v series
120th is the standard of most cameras FLASH sync speed. the only way you can get full use out of your flash and camera is to shoot at 1/250th (1/800th on a Hasselblad) or slower. there is a high sync speed, which will let you shoot faster with a flash but will eliminate full power and make the flash terrible. DO YOUR RESEARCH. Also, Atiba Jefferson is one of the best photographers to ever walk on this earth, and his skills are alot better than your words on a youtube comment
H1 is the best because it syncs at 1/800? Doesn't that pocketwizard only sync at 1/500 for leaf shutters?
1:17 JERRY HSU!!!!!!! (Y)
The Javier photo was in the new theskateboardmag
ANYONE else notice His badass POT leaf socks
What kind of camera is this video being filmed with??
Use fast shutter, high speed sync
@NachoSkate geting the picture in motion perfectly
@IceQuiky They might not show them because they might have been used in a add (sold) witch means that he does not own the pictures and can get sued if he used them, or showed them.
Without flash, yes. He's saying it syncs faster,
'Did anybody else notice that this was during the filming of Stay Gold?
just use highspeed sync. My Canon 5D Mkii with remote off camera flash kicks ass.
shame there is no mention of FP sync or electronic shutter cameras
I live by that spot...its bigger than it looks
lol id buy a hasselblad if they werent like 20,000....i need money for all my other equipment first lol.
were was dis filed
This isn't entirely true, the shutter speed doesn't matter as long as your flash's power duration is fast enough. You can do shutter drag shots like Blabac with an exposure as long as 10 sec and still get a sharp image. The only thing syncing at 1/500th or 1/800th of a sec does is blacken out the ambient like in the back round (i.e. blacking out the sun to make it look later in the day or at night). Most speed lights freeze action perfectly around 1/16th and 1/32nd power but you can experiment.
Was that Jerry Hsu?
Yep. where are the photos?
What flash do they have
You should put some pictures of examples to show us the differences.
I just want to shoot with this guy once. I'd learn so much shit in one day.
wheres the next infocus!?
What flashes ?
now I have an excuse to buy a hasselblad!
40 Grand?? is that pounds or rupies you're talking about? I looked it up and it's around $6,700 usd...
he is talking about the Hasselblad H1, most Hasselblads brand new are worth around 40 grand USD. DO YOUR RESEARCH.
where are the pictures ??????????
Everyone watch How to:Flash Duration with Sam McGuire.
Coleman Mullins nice!
Add in a top of the line leaf digital back and you have yourself an almost 60,000 dollar rig
why the brown tape, anyone?
if only i could afford a hasselblad
@bcroslin Amen!
Thanks man. So I'd be right in assuming that 99.9% of skate photogs just deal with sync speeds of 1/250 secs or less? Kinda defeats the purpose of this being a 'how to' video. Still interesting to see what the top pros use though.
dope h1
I thought hasselblad is bad at shooting motions... :/
well, its the flashes fault that he can't use higher than 1/250
broke leg..2:58
So sick of people complaining about price in tuts like these. Why is it that people only expect to see tutorials on low budget Photography/Videography?
Stop complaining, go out and shoot, and learn from your mistakes!
RUclips has not always been here, not everyone gets there shit spoon fed to them.
where is the photos??? talk only!!!!
@TheMustachemurderers When you start donating money to get everyone's vx fixed.
1:19 hsu
he sounds like Lumpy Space Princess
atiba is ma nigga!
no camera can shoot that fast with any flash. DO YOUR RESEARCH , the only way it could is if it was on high sync speed... which eliminates the power of the flash. 1/250th is the standard for most cameras, and that is without High sync speed, where you could capture the full power of the flash.
Why, why, why wouldn't you show the photos so we can see what he's talking about?!?!?!?
Put some example photos of what he's talking about!
Love Atiba and his work, but this How to video was a fail. Really, no examples of what the photo looks like using these different settings? Seems like that would be a main portion of the video...
@SCFX5769 check atibas instagram
I fingered this up just because you said finger up. ;)
what the fucks with the camo tape? haha
all i learned from this video is that with my current wage i will be able to afford all of this equipment in about never
dope hassleblad commercial
Go make you own examples.
no examples of what the photo looks like really sucks!!! we need to see WHY AND WHAT the sync does.
yo on the real idk what atiba is talking about
the guys that don't know what Atiba's on about have clearly invested in a camera they don't know how to function and how a camera works...... noobs
40 grand camera left laying around on the floor, madness, madness i tell you
lol
what did i just watch? where are samples? could have said same shit with iphone in his hand
fuuuucking hell hasselblad = 7000 buckss
lol you said finger
WUT DIS FOO SAYING?
faster shutter freezes faster things? Um duh? I get frustrated just listening to this guy. Nothing was learned besides Atiba has a huge ego and apparently a scarf makes you look like a pro. smh
He's not even wearing the fucking scarf in a way that would offer any sort of thermal advantages. Hate it.
Don't start? Everybody sucks at first...
