    I grew up with these things.
    They were first launched in the year I was born, and they scared the shit out of me watching the pilots flying.
    Sound so GOOD.

    I pay great respect to these brave guys as a farmer in north Waikato as in the rest of the country, they do a bloody good job

    I have been in that plane when it wan based in Wanganui and flown by Dick Stevenson.

    Amazing - but it seems there aren't a lot of options should the engine fail.

      They can jettison the load in 3 seconds if they run into trouble, but the odds of landing in one piece are slim

      These guys don't crash a lot, and it's almost never because of engine failure. You might not be able to get back to the original strip (though the things are very overpowered once you dump the load, so even a sick engine will fly), but also they can land in just about any open space of 100m-200m length e.g. a cow paddock.

      Usually super phosphate or crushed lime or nitrogen pellets straight onto grass (pasture).
